💜 ABOUT ME:
Hi and welcome! I'm Tanya and the only thing I like more than learning languages is probably talking about learning languages (well, that and hoarding language books).
My native language is Russian and I'm currently in different stages of learning English, Spanish, Polish, Italian, Korean, and Japanese.
This video is not sponsored. Some links above are affiliate links.
I like hearing about all goals, even if they're not about languages. It shows that people are balanced and is a reminder that language learning doesn't need to be anyone's whole life. Also, I'm just a goal-oriented person and like seeing what other pepple prioritize each year.
I totally agree!
I love the idea of going deeper!
My goal has a similar flavor but maybe not the exact thing! Coming out of the other end of university and now working, plus contemplating grad school, I find that all my hobbies are barren wastelands. I am such a boring person now! I wasn’t able to maintain a healthy balance with my part time work, internship and school. I am proud I got through that but more ready to be myself again and not just a student. Studying a language is one of my new goals, to be able to read more books and talk with people, but my main goal is to renew my love of hiking and photography. I want to be that cringy person showing all my friends different pictures of moss and birds 😂
I love the last part, my sister has a pro camera and she already told me she can lend it to me. Last year was my first time doing birdwatching.
Love your videos and I'm glad you're back ❤
Thank you! I'm happy to be back too 💜
I'm such a big proponent of this concept. "Year of Depth". Maybe I'm just old and cranky, but it seems like people nowadays are "dabblers". I would personally like to be mych stronger in the handful of skills I've developed. I wish you all the best.
Such great advice in this video! I fell into the bad habit of acquiring too many resources and apps, and only making it part-way through any of them. I really want to instead focus on *finishing* some of what I've started before getting distracted by other new, shiny things. I think I'll make better progress this way, and also get a real feeling of accomplishment, which will help my energy/motivation for language learning.
A great trick for shadowing is finding a “Language Parent”, a native speaker who speaks Italian in a way you would like to sound, and then shadowing her videos!
I have been learning Russian for 5 years at home. I plan to take the A2 test at the end of the year. I want to focus on reaching A2.
Good luck! 🤞
Yesss, I have heard of the concept but never actually tried to find a "parent" for any of my languages. I think 2025 might be the year I actually do this.
Удачи в изучении русского!
Thank you for mentioning that article! I love the idea of going deeper and not wider! I personally think that, even more with social media/RUclips, in a society that highly focuses on consumption, we sometimes get very tempted by the multiples options all around. We constantly get to see pretty new things we could get/buy in a second and "make us happy". Even if we look more carefully at advertisements, they often try to associate their new product to the feeling of happiness ("Buy this butter and you will spend wonderful happy family dinners with your loved ones" kind of things). So going against the trend, thus deeper, instead of wider, is definitely a very interesting approach. I cannot wait to see how your year unfolds! 😊
Edit: Oh I just read the article the book and the author also talks about consumption. Which means I only paraphrased what he said haha 🤭
1000% agree with what you said! The anti-consumption element was what actually sold me on the concept of the year of depth. Btw, the author has another great article about how most things have to be paid for twice - first with money and then with the time. So, for example, if you buy a book that only costs 1 dollar, that's one dollar lost unless you actually put in however many hours it takes to read it. Don't know if that's something you'd be interested in reading, but here's a link just in case: www.raptitude.com/2022/01/everything-must-be-paid-for-twice/
@tbenavente It is indeed something I am absolutely interested in! (I even collect some of them in my database to reread them if I find them very inspiring and thought provoking). Thank you so much for that article, I'm going to dive into it right away! 🤭
@tbenavente I indeed am very interested in this kind of articles, so thank you for this further lecture! I am going to save it up in my database right away! ☺️
Thank you for the motivation to go through with our language learning goals ❤
It's great to see you posting again!!! My goals are pretty similar to last year, but updated for some resources I started part way through last year. I'm using the BoYa Chinese textbook/workbook at the quasi-intermediate 1 level, and expect to finish it in the first half of this year, then start on quasi-intermediate 2. I want to continue listening to the podcast Chillchat, which I really like, but also find another to listen to, since I've listened to most of the backlog of that one. I want to continue taking conversation lessons with my tutor, and watching RUclips to take notes on, and other stuff like that. My overall goal is just to continue my focus on Chinese, and hopefully reach a confident B2 level by the end of the year!
I really like the concept of focusing on a year of depth. I have similar struggles with impulsivity, so it's a good reminder. I was already planning on sticking to my single target language this year, but it's a good idea to apply the concept beyond just language learning. I want to focus on the hobbies and interests I already have.
Good luck with your goals! When creating my plan, I decided to come up with some challenges I think I may face in achieving my goal. iI think it helps to anticipate what may make me not achieve my goal and hopefully work against it :)
Ooh, that's smart! I definitely need to do the same
Omgggggg I checked around twice a month for almost a year if you posted a new video and there you are! I’m so happy! Your content is so different from other languages and polyglot content on youtube
I used to want to learn modern greek as well but the lack of ressources was a real pain haha that’s how I discovered your channel btw
Love you 🖤
Due to having exams in the end of next year, preparing for them is in my priority. Languages are my passion tho. I’ve started Chinese this year, so I’d rather continue it. Also I’d like to improve Korean listening and mb speaking 😊
I’m so glad u came back!! Cause i like your videos and the other day I was looking through your channel when suddenly I saw that you uploaded a video… after more than one year.. what a coincidence..
if you don’t have anymore fans I’m dead
Haha, thank you 💜
it's nice to hear from you again!! i always love peering into other people's language learning adventures, they really inspire me to continue my own. i've fallen off track with my own language learning due to other life stuff, but i've really been wanting to pick things back up again so maybe i'll take things slow too and try to do a little of just one this year :0
So happy to see videos from you again ! Welcome back !
So glad to see you back.
I’m so glad to see that we are so similar in terms of goals. I cannot just set goals for the entire year, it’s a flow for me 😅
Good luck on Italian and German! It think focusing on depth rather than breadth is smart, but it's so hard when you have so many hobbies you want to work on 😫
It is really hard, but since I’m already great at going wide, I might as well see how this whole depth thing works out 😅
Really like the idea of going deeper! I definitely will try this, especially with the resources I own for my language learning.
Thanks Tanyaさん for sharing this video! I’m currently on Day 52 of my 100-day CJK challenge, where I study Chinese, Japanese, and Korean every day. I’m already considering doing another 100-day challenge afterward, but this time I might take your advice and focus more deeply on just one or two languages. It’s tough to decide which ones to prioritize since I want to learn them all-but I’m leaning toward focusing on Korean. (๑>ᴗ
I’m not learning Italian but “If this is a man” by Primo Levi is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I got so excited when I saw his books in your pile.
This video is very professional you make alot of sense
My 2025 main goal is reaching B1 in Estonian (maybe even starting B2 if possible, but at least a comfortable B1). I am also not allowing myself any new language, although I might dabble in those I've already started. However the consistent dabbles as I want to see some progress in them in the near future are Danish (getting a stronger A2), German and Russian (comfortable A1 for both).
This year I also want to try and read more books. Last year even though I read some good stuff, they were very few as I used all my energy to just study Estonian (I really hope I can start to read Estonian books this year ;^;)
Regarding other hobbies, I've been playing around with the idea of starting collages and mixed media stuff to see if it also motivates me to start journaling again? Or at least write a bit in Estonian daily - but also because I miss doing creative things and just drawing is not as enjoyable for me anymore as I associate it with stress and bad feelings most of the time. I've been telling myself I would start to learn to knit again since last year, but that didn't happen, so maybe this year. There are so many books for crafts and hobbies in Estonian, so that could actually be a good motivation! With luck maybe some RUclips channel in Estonian or Danish...? In Korean perhaps.
Sounds like a good plan. Be kind to yourself. All progress is good!
Im currently B1 ib Spanish and not even A1 in Chinese. I'm traveling to Spain through my university next summer, so by then id like to work on my active vocab by getting through 5k cards in Anki, reading the Percy Jackson series in Spanish, finally learning the subjunctive for real, and practicing speaking once a week with my professor. I'd also like to get through maybe 1k Hanzi for Chinese and be able to do some comprehensible input for that.
That sounds like a solid plan! Best of luck 💪
Ooo going deeper instead of wider is very intriguing! 🤩 My two main goals are to finish my Russian Accelerator course and practice speaking Spanish. Last year I did so much listening that my comprehension improved but I can barely string a sentence together 😅
Trust me, I know what it feels like to have a huge gap between comprehension and production skills 😅
Best of luck with both languages! 🤞🏻
I've got that book problem real bad 😅 What I need to do is delete my TBR and rebuild the whole list with books on my shelves. Then I'll actually read them. Silly plan but not as silly as owning so many unread books.
Going deeper and not wider is exactly what I planned fot this year.
I will work hard on my arabic. And I hope by the end of the year I will be able to read my first book in Italian. I will also focus on my speaking and writing skills in French. And I will finsh my Javascript and all the projects for my Web Development career so that I can finally go online with my Portfolio. So, no new projects for me this year
love your content please keep posting it ❤
Hahah the craft things. Just yesterday I wanted to go get a crochet hook and yarn and I was like…no, you need to wait at least a month to see if you still want that 😂 oooo My Brilliant Friend ❤😍 so excited to see how German goes! I am hoping to take it seriously this summer.
I loved the idea of crocheting until I realized that I can't listen to audio books and count stitches at the same time 😅
@ ooooo something I hadn’t considered 🫢
Deeper Not Wider! 💪
wow i like your content :) how many and what language do you learn :) planing to watch all your movies so interesting :)
Omg we're the same - I also buy lots of second hand books and then mostly read library books or books on my kindle. I decided to do go on a book buy ban with maybe 1-2 exceptions if I really really want to.
I considered a full-on ban, but I’m very much a mood reader, and I worry that setting too many limitations would just lead straight to a reading slump 😅
hiii good luck guys
Feel free to talk about things aside of languages!
❤
I have ADHD and I have very, very poor impulse control. I know exactly what you mean when you describe your impulses
Plz do korean learning plan
Про коллажи интересно! Расскажите)))
❤❤❤👍👍👍
Hey girlie. I guess the link ofr your insta page does not work
Hi :) which app is this? 🧜🏼♀️ at 2:13 thx
Hi! It’s Google Play Books
✨@@tbenavente
Would you like to mantein the other languages you speak or you want just focusing on Italian and German this year? I'm thinking about focuse on Spanish and German in 2025... but I don't want to forget English and French because I'm afraid to loose my B2 level 🙈 I know, it's insane... but I still want to stay in contact with them both 🤷♀️💪🏻
I'm not planning anything in particular for Spanish and Korean, but I think it will happen naturally because I tend to watch quite a lot of RUclips in Korean + there's at least a couple of books in I'd like to read in Spanish this year.
My goal for 2025 is to not stop learning 😂 I only have one language I want to learn (Italian) but I always start at the beginning of the year and then the rest of my life takes over - looking at my lessons I only made it to April in 2024! I'm trying to do a low pressure short exericse daily like Clozemaster and do one of my online lessons three times per week. It's only the very beginning of the year so we'll have to see how I go but I have retained knowledge from my previous attempts so at least I'm not starting from total scratch.
Yeah, I've also realized that it all comes back eventually, even if you forget some things during a break from studying. Wishing you all the best with your Italian in 2025!
@@tbenavente Thank you! Looking forward to seeing how we both get on 😀
