Pakistan: Victim or exporter of terrorism? | Head to Head

  • "They deluded themselves in believing that they were allies. Actually, they were not," says former Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. General Asad Durrani, commenting on Pakistan's rocky relationship with the United States since they allied in the "War on Terror".
    In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges General Durrani on whether Pakistan is fighting or fuelling international terrorism.
    We explore the nation's role as a US ally in the "War on Terror", and investigate claims that it has been backing the Afghan Taliban, whilst its offshoot, the Pakistani Taliban, wages a brutal insurgency at home.
    Is Pakistan a rogue state? Or is it stuck between a rock and a hard place? And what role should the military play in a democratic Pakistan?
    Joining this discussion are:
    • Dr Farzana Shaikh, associate fellow at Chatham House and author of Making Sense of Pakistan
    • Declan Walsh, Pakistan Bureau chief for the New York Times
    • Shazadi Beg, a human rights barrister and Pakistan specialist

    The general is just a soldier speaking in purely sterile terms about what's happening and what he and his country did. You don't think American generals are sitting around talking in sterile terms of "collateral damage" about the millions of Iraqis and Afghans they've allowed to be killed.

      @Manohar Gajananan @Manohar Gajananan Well you should envy us for the brilliant timing of our foreign policy choices over the last 7 decades. We are not sitting in anyone's lap, is that the best you can come up with??? 😘 You cannot bring to knees two military super powers in a span of 4 decades by sitting in laps 😐 its called 'executing a cunning military strategy' very very successfully.
      As for you self-reliance, we know it too, how Nehru ran to UN when tribals and forces crossed Baramulla on their way to Srinagar in '48. How the same Nehru literally begged the Yanks to send its pilots and planes to bomb the Chinese in' 62. The assistance from Soviet navy and KGB in '71 and US and Israeli assistance in Kargil. What self reliance, han? 😁 You couldn't get rid of Chinese in Doklam, now they are asking Bhutan for land swaps just a couple of days ago. They are already encroaching in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pardesh, you Chicken neck is almost in the claws of the Dragon while the US is giving you a soft massage on your lower back and your traditional ally Russia is mum despite your defense minister's visit and yet you have the audacity of talking about giving 20-years to Pakistan??? Lolz what happened to your last deadline that ended in 2015?????? 🤣 Stop Sabre rattling and be real for once. India is isolated from all corners in its neighborhood 😉

      At least in India rape is severely frowned upon. Whereas in the Islamic republics of ISIL and Pakistan, the rape of thousands and thousands of captured 6-12 year olds is a religious duty.
      And if the girls don't comply, you kill them.
      After all. bacchabazee is an internationally known Pakistani custom. Which is exported by Pakistan the world over. Thus the UK is reeling from thousands and thousands of tiny girls in the Midlands who have been captured and used as sex slaves by gangs and gans of PAKISTANI men.
      So much so that even Muslim MPs in Britain are admitting that that is Pakistani culture.

    The audience is too keen in trying to accuse the General of being a terrorist himself, given his views. This man, and I am not a Pakistani, has been on the ground, in charge of an intelligence agency which was at that time facing a very, very grave situation. Here he is talking about the absolute realities that had to be done and taken care of. The decisions had to be made, even though some may argue quite rightly that not all were the best of them. Still, as an Indian, I have immense respect for the kind of honesty the general has shown. Mehdi, the panel, the entire audience can try to crack him but the fact remains that he has seen and done it all. The best we can do is try and understand the world from his viewpoint, without prejudice.

Its not just commendable its incredibly shocking that in this era which is riddled with lies, deceit and propaganda he came on infront of a global audience and laid out his heart.

      1965 - India wanted Lahore - Got it - No - Lost
      1971 - India wanted to separate Bengal - Got it - Yes - Won
      "If pak withdraws its troops from kashmir today and stop sending terrorists"
      Just like in 1980 India withdrew from Siachen right!!!
      Indian Hindu is a conceited cruel baniyaa.

      +Usman Qazi u might wanna read about the wars on internet from NEUTRAL sources and decide what is what. Also when u try to tell us about what and how we are,India is not the nation known for providing support and safe house to terrorists and terrorists groups.

    • @MrMeetpatel
      @MrMeetpatel 8 лет назад +7

      +Usman Qazi about 1965 war, the war was inconclusive,the war ended after the superpower interfered , India had upper hand. what exchange of territories u are talking about? India had taken control of about 1800 km^2 including 360km2 of Lahore front while pakistan had taken about 600 km2.
      PoK was already taken by Pakistan before the India had its access to it,it was after the legally joining of J& K to India that India stopped Pak army taking farther of the territory. Yes It was India who took the matter to the UN ,and resolution included Pakistan as well to withdraw its forces from PoK and hold the voting process,when did that happen?

    • @punkpipebombb1994
      @punkpipebombb1994 8 лет назад +4

      You need to read documents which are neutral neither of India nor pakistan. India has never started the war. 1965 pakistan sent the army troops in akhnoor. In 1948 kashmir was pakistan's if pakistanis would have shown some patience. U invaded it. N even in kargil. So stop blaming India.

    • @reanf226
      @reanf226 7 лет назад +1

      india did not want "lahore" or any part of PoK. If India wanted a military solution then even in 1971, India could have gained more ground before drawing up the Simla agreement. 1965 war was started by Pakistan. Pakistan literally follows a first strike Policy.

    I really do not understand the mindset of the People of Afghanistan . From last several decades ( even before 1950 ) Afghanistan was very unstable , economically weak country , poorest infrastructure , no defense , no university , poor health care facility , living in caves, Tribes were busy fighting each other like today.
    When Russian came in 80's , it was revealed that they cannot defend themselves. Millions of Afghani Rushed to Pakistan ( Country whose independence opposed by Afghanistan) for Aid. WHY?
    USA provided the weapon through Pakistan . Anyone have better plan than this ? Pakistan should have closed borders and let millions of Afghani die ? This is what Afghani people want ?
    If people of Afghanistan were any Talented, they must have shown their strength even before Russian Arrival. Charlie Wilson . Russian Left, tribes start fighting each other again.
    Millions of Afghani were welcomed in Pakistan Like families . Living Peacefully , doing business , including the Karzai ( domestic enemy) .
    Two Afghani cannot sit together to resolve their own dispute , but sure they will sit together to blame Pakistan .
    Blaming Pakistan for the failures of Afghanistan is not going to work . Stop acting like Afghanistan was like Japan , USA , Germany before this war , it was a ruined land like today. People of Afghanistan need to take matter in their own hand . Their future is with other Afghani , as no one going to resolve their internal disputes.

      irfan D lol how do you look at yourself at the mirror with that bullshit propaganda lie your trying to spread??! Look at pictures of Afghanistan in the 60's and 70's and you say they were living backwards?? They had infrastructure, hospitals, university's etc etc. remember who your masters were (British) if it wasn't for your British masters there will be no such thing as Pakistan so whenever you see a British person kiss their feet! But Afghans don't kiss no ones feet, while the British were ruling your people afghans were playing soccer with the British heads, even till this day there finding the British empire soldiers body in Afghanistan so thank the British for creating the Duran line cause one day Afghanistan will reunite with their brothers and you Pakistani slaves can't run to the British empire no more...

    Wow Mehdi is the worst interviewer ever! Please allow your guests to at least FINISH their sentences before you shove down our throats your view about the subject. And if you are bringing on a guest to discuss something, at least be respectful enough to not scoff at everything he or she says. What's the point of this show if you are not even WILLING to understand a point of view that is different from yours?

      Ravi Kumar, you need a lot of growing!! It does not suit you to talk about terrorism when you yourself are guilty of it. It is too machinating!!! India with its RAW is guilty of so many counts of terrorism in Pakistan. India supports TTP which has claimed numerously the acts of terrorism. One famous one is Peshawer School attack. Your media cleverly hides that information from you.
