You should do an extended stay in Thailand before making the final jump. Also know Jon is just a guy with a perspective and biases as are all of us. Hence visiting to get a feel for the country. You may hate it. I believe Jon would tell you to do the same. Just moving without ever being there is risky and most who do this become disgruntled.

I’ve spent 4 years in Bangkok and 4 years in Manila, I totally agree, Thailand certainly gives more value in terms of rent, food, shopping. The disparity of the rich and the poor in the Philippines also is an issue, where the rich do not feel the pinch paying for overpriced items.

You have accustomed to living in Thailand for 13 years, so you feel home. 2 days in the Philippines is not considered an immerse and you can generally conclude it. That is wrong mindset. I have travelled around the world and there are lot of differences in each country. There are bad and good places, but to criticize one is better that you love than the other for equal/comparison is just bias.

  • @ChrisLivingInYork

The Philippines can feel more expensive than Thailand for a few reasons, even though its economy isn't as strong. Because the country relies so much on imports, everything from food to fuel tends to cost more. Getting around can also be pricey due to weaker infrastructure and higher utility costs. In contrast, Thailand’s thriving tourism and self-sufficiency help keep prices low for travelers. Plus, in the Philippines, remittances from overseas workers often push up the cost of living in cities. On top of that, businesses face higher taxes and more red tape, and these extra costs usually get passed on to everyday expenses.

I know it's beating the dead horse here, but we all know that all countries have their good and bad and we all know those people who are passionate of their country. Most of my opinions of Korea are positive, but I also have equally as many negative things. Every time I visit home back in America, it makes me appreciate Korea even more when I get back. Reverse culture shock is indeed a funny thing. Nothing like that feeling of "home". Korea is that place for me. Having been to Chiang Mai, it had a lasting effect on us. I get the love for it, Jon! Maybe you can make a video about that
Also i lived in thailand many winters and i specify winters been coming since 2012 but only 2 to 5 months per year

One issue on the horizon for Thailand affordability is the new Govt promise to raise minimum wage around the country by 60% - 70% next year to 600B a day. Starting with about 15-25% next month to 400B nationwide. For those that think this won’t happen, they did similar last time in power when minimum wages went up around 40%. That sparked a round of inflation so that most locals ended up with about the same in their pocket after prices adjusted to the new wage costs.

    • @calky360
      @calky360 2 месяца назад

I wouldn't worry too much about it. 600THB by 2027 I think is the proposal, but is not approved and I'm sure will have plenty of pushback by businesses. And even if they do, do it, like you said, it would just cause immediate huge inflation which would cause the THB to lose strength, and voila, when you convert your (GBP/USD/AUD) local currency you end up with the same spending power anyway.

Thailand is baseline, so comparing it to every country is completely fine.
You can't please everyone, so you shouldn't care about the people who attack you because you make them question their decision going to the country they went to.
Many have invested a lot of time and money in one country, only to be told by you that there is a better option, so ofc they will be defensive in order to not regret their choice.
So imo, ignore them, because they're just salty you point and say "look at this, this is much better there than here".

Bangkok & RAM hospitals in Chiang Mai billed FMP direct for anything more than 10,000 THB. I did hear something about RAM stopping because long delays getting paid or something but I am not sure. Any we you can check these out and check with the hospitals direct. RAM and Bangkok Hospitals are all over Thailand so I suppose if you go on any they can find out about the ones in CM. See - VA Foreign Medical Program Direct Bill Hospitals ASEANNOW. Also See - Tricare & FMP & VA Beneficiaries BANGKOK HOSPITAL. I am not sure how it works in Bangkok but anywhere else the same Dr’s cover both private and public hospitals. In Vachira government hospital in Phuket City and the general government hospitals in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Udon Thani they have Foreigner Customer offices. These offices have PR girls who can speak English and will do any translating you need. You wait in an a/c room and they call you when a Dr is ready to see and you get fast tracked to see a Dr. The have agreements with most Thai health insurance companies who they can bill direct. As a rule of thumb they cost about 1/3rd of a standard private hospitals and medication is a fraction of private hospitals and cheaper than high street pharmacies. To get an idea see YT Vid - Hospitals & Info ISAAN FARANG.

I think you are only comparing Bangkok & Manila not Thailand & Philippines. Some advantages I can think that Philippines has are
    1) If your a Brit Retiree the state pension is indexed in Philippines and last years increase was 10.1%, this year was 8.5% and next year will be 4.1% so that makes a difference.
    2) Retiree visa and I assume other types require a lower financial requirement and remember last year Thailand was saying the requirement has not gone up since 2003 and they were going to increase it and also talking about health insurance being mandatory.
    3) Philippines do not tax foreign income and are not a CRS like Thailand who share all your bank accounts and financial institutions with your Revenue Dep’t in your Home Country and visa a versa. Note if you can’t show you are tax resident in any Country then any money you have in CRS Countries is taxable as if are a tax resident there.
    4) I can remember when Thailand introduced the retirement visa in 1997 after the SEA and I think it was a condition to get the IMF bail out loan. The Pattaya Mail had done recent articles saying the number on retirement and marriage visas had halved in the last 20 years and is now approx 250,000. In the same time the number of tourists has tripled.
    5) I used to go away working contract jobs but been based in Thailand since 1996 and seen a lot of changes and more are coming and fast. The usual suspects of banks, elites, multi nationals want to see the AEC move to an AU with free movement of goods and labor and single currency and Thailand seen to be taking a lead here.
    6) Who but some 3rd world Countries offer retirement visas to Expats with modest income and Thailand is no longer a 3rd world Country and the number of retirees has halved in the last 20 years. It’s just my opinion but I think sooner or later they will scrap the retirement visa but if that happens hopefully they would Grandfather those already on them but it wouldn’t be a given.
    7) As Thailand has developed it has got ever more difficult to stay long time and I see that continuing and unless your married to a Thai or wealthy it might be an option to stay 6 months but not permanently.

@@davidb2206 you mean if I eat my own farm food in Thailand, my food have such issue? I only eat wild caught seafood. Not even Norwegian farm salmon. Jon is comparing Thailand and the Philippines from his short few days experience. I was at Fernando Poe Jr's Studio at Quezon City 10 years ago, in order for me to buy something at 7-11, two armed bodyguards were with me because they said there are many drug addicts around the area.
I once had a bad opinion of HK, every corner there are at least 2 police officers patrolling, then a friend of mine said your country is very unsafe because there is no police officer around every corner. I'm from Singapore.
Anyway, it's Jon's experience and opinion.

@davidb2206 that's my point. He's basing his experience of the country based on a few days experience in the big crowded capital

Don't disagree with your findings, but missed so much, not a word about accomodation, etc. Still Philippines is best for women, can't go wrong, as you say. Hands down find a nice Pinay and move to Malaysia, go to Bangkok on business meetings. Doesn't get more value than that.

Do not waste energy on the haters when you are telling the truth, I have never been to the Philippines but from what I have researched, it is like you told it, bad value for money, bad food, great people and excellent English. Would be fun to see som videos from around the islands next time you visit!
