    This is such an excellent way to build up these skills. I really like the gradual progressive approach, starting simple and removing constraints in stages.

    Man I saw this video last night! @11:20 to be exact and I said to myself, “I’ll workout these ideas for about 30 minutes” b/c I had to be to work this morning at 6:30! I didn’t get to bed til 2:30!!! I just went from one song to the next going from parts I-VI 🤦🏾‍♂️ ‘Our Love is Here to Stay’ ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ ‘Joy Spring’ & ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ (my blues substitute) I couldn’t believe this basic Etude could make me sound great w/out thinking too much! Thanks for the tutorial... I would like to take a lesson or 2 from you ✊🏾🎹😷

    Hey Noah, I'm enjoying your videos. I was a little surprised by your choice to play Dorian over the F-7, which is VI- in this progression, yes? Or is that just for the sake of explaining this concept. If so, makes sense. I normally like to point out to my students how all of the chords fit into Ab, and how all of the chords function within the same key/scale. At any rate, thanks for the great vids and love the playing! (I'm buying your book).

    Hi Noah! Thank you for this great tutorial! I´d like to ask you: Shouldn´t be there instead of F minor dorian scale the F minor aeolian scale instead (dflat instead of d?) ? F is the VI-th in the progression and in the Ab scale and I am confused how to decide which scale to use? Or does it depends on the situation or on the melody of a song? Thank you very much, best regards!!! Cheers!

    Hey Noah, how do you incorporate language/vocab into these exercises? Or do you use another method entirely?

    • @brucejeric6701
      @brucejeric6701 2 года назад +1

      Hi
      Saw your question and it was not addressed. I’m not Noah. I think what he is teaching is for practice. We all need to know are scales and modes. But this isn’t improvising. Improvising is making melodies. And embellishing on that. That’s where learning jazz language you like comes in. Go to a jazz standard book Using this progression and fine players you love soloing over it. And pick lines you really love and ingrain them. First in the key you find them in. Then work out in all keys. Hope that helps?

    You are playing a 6-2-5-1 progression in Ab major. For beginners why not use the natural minor scale( relative minor) for the F minor (6 chord )? Keep it all diatonic to start with?

    I don't undersand why the first Fm should be dorian. In the context, it's a VI, so it should be aeolian, isn't it?

  • @WolfikCZ

    Shouldn´t be there instead of F minor dorian scale the F minor aeolian scale instead? It would make much more sense. vi-ii-V-i anyway, thank you

    • @justinsayavong5699
      @justinsayavong5699 4 года назад

      Liberty is freedom of expression, and vocabulary is like how you say something. So what he is trying to say is that every level of this video there are less limits (liberty) and more chances to communicate what you're trying to say through the piano (vocabulary).
