I love sod busters. My favorite knife is a Case Trapper in a Sky Blue Jigged Bone. I love everything about it. The color is gorgeous and I really love the way it cuts.
Many many years ago I was heading to the mountains on an archery elk hunt. I had forgotten my sheath knife and needed a quick replacement. I stopped at a hardware store and on a whim decided I could get by with a hunting size folder so I bought the large case Sodbuster As luck would have it I killed an elk with my recurve bow on that trip and the Sodbuster did the job quartering and skinning. I really haven’t been hunting without it since. It’s done lots of deer antelope and elk! 👍
that old timer lookingggggg sweet!!! I agree for everyday normal tasks this tools are excellent options. I used them all the time in my office and people don't think about it at all... and actually get complements all the time.. Thanks for sharing ...
Absolutely gorgeous crew you got there!!! I totally agree that the Sodbuster style knife is one of the best and it was a Crimson Peach Seed Jigged Sodbuster jr that got me into traditional slipjoint knives 🤌❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I've watched quite a few Case Sod Buster Jr reviews on RUclips and there are a couple things nobody seems to mention. One, how light they are. The thin handled ones only weigh 1.9 oz. That's very light for a knife of this size and capability. Obviously, the light weight is mostly due to having only one blade. But also because they don't have nickel silver bolsters on the ends adding weight, and because the blade is so light. Two, the blade grind is hollow ground. This makes it a terrific slicer and contributes to the light weight since when they grind the steel it removes a lot of weight from each side. And the blade stock is pretty thin to begin with. Another advantage of a hollow grind is that the thinness of the blade continues upward into the blade further than any other grind. This means that as you sharpen the knife over time, it remains relatively easy to get a fine edge because the blade remains so thin.
@@ericasedc my other comment was a DM to Boston Blade Review regarding a Bark River I sent his way. No idea how it ended up on your video, my apologies.
Sod busters also maximise the cover real estate so if you have beautiful jigged bone covers like those case knives you generally get more more of it on a sod buster. I happen to like a bit of contrast with a bolster though and that Shrade Old Timer gives you the best of both worlds. I'm loving the rich golden brown tones on that saw cut bone. That's a huge jump in quality over recent Old Timer ranges.
Love your video! "Go use your SH!T", perfect! This is by far one of the best reviews and comparisons I have seen on the Sodbuster type knives. Thank you!
Yo yo Erica fantastic video…… I’ve been chasing these buggers for years and years if it has a sodbuster pattern I’m all over it!!!! Thanks so much have a fantastic weekend go home stay out of that pub!!!! Lol 😂

Love the videos, keep up the good work! Just received my first Case sodbuster jr. today. Yellow with CV steel. Blade was so out of alignment it was rubbing on one of the liners. Disappointed but thats Case I guess.....hopefully the replacement is better.
The bruin is my favorite traditional knife. I have the all. I'm working on getting USA made older models. They make a heritage series w/ d2 which is an awesome work knife. It has a toothy edge. They have standard models at tractor supply for 10 dollars in the deal bins right now. Really enjoy your content
@@ericasedc Probably will! These new ones really caught my interest because they have adjustable pivots and backlocks. Don't see that too often on traditional knives.
I purchased a NOS 2018 Sodbuster Jr. last week in the Peach Seed Jig Amber Bone with the SSB blade and I put my 1991 CASE XX Trapper in my box of knives and put the Trapper Jr. in my front pocket.👍👏❤️🇺🇸
Nice to see the Old Timer knives back in the USA. If you ever get a chance to get your hands on a U.S. made Sharpfinger take it. I have an original from the 70s and absolutely love it.
The Tru-sharp is actually pretty cool. So easy to bring up to razor. Of course, we like patina, but there are just so many cool styles and colors that only come in stainless. I’ll take both. Best blade style on case and I always prefer single bladed knives. I’m also a fan of the vanilla puddin’ Delryn version, and they’ve been doing that over a hundred years.
You lit a fire with this video bc I had three Soddys at the time and now I have nine lol Of course the great belt sheath I bought from Randy at GA Adventures helped with the decision BtW it holds Barlows and a bunch of other knives too Love you a bunch

Hi Erica great channel loving the Sodbuster content! I always carry one in my fifth pocket and like many others its one of my all time favorite patterns. I have a question and hope to hear your thoughts and advice. First you have inspired my to add to my collection. I will have to make some online purchases for the models I am interested in but I am concerned about QC issues especially blade centering how do you handle this if buying online? Do you have any recommended companies to buy from? Many thanks!
I am also a fan of locking sodbuster style. Not too many choices though, they're mostly slipjoints. I am thinking about getting a Boker traditional series gentlemen's knife, but it is made of D2 and i'm not sure if D2 acquires patina
Roper makes an awesome locking style sod buster made with genuine white bone handle. If you only buy US made then you won't like it. It's great quality for $20 shipped and has a carbon steel blade, buy from Chicago knives. To be honest I've gotten some seriously lacking Case stockman's and trappers with bad quality control. So for me just because it says made in US does not mean great quality for the money.
@@Theylive4213 I purchased the Roper Tumbleweed knife you mentioned and it's great. Although after some time I realized that I prefer stainless because my carbon blade looks like a mess now. I can fix it up no problem, but I don't enjoy maintaining anything beyond what is absolutely necessary. So from now on I'll probably stick with stainless blades. One of the things I love about my Swiss Army Knife is that I don't have to fuss with it at all and it stays perfect. The Roper knife is otherwise great in terms of aesthetic and utility. Thanks for the suggestion 👍
Hi Erica Patina is cool, unfortunately, opening bags of sand to lay concrete flagstones wears it off😢 Looks like I'll need to up my patina forming game!
Erica, do you have any Large Sodbusters?I I recently got a full sized Case Sodbuster, and I like it even better than my Jrs! Big, tough knife, so comfortable in hand, but light enough to pocket carry, which is how I’ve been carrying it. Left front pocket with my bandana.
@@ericasedc I used to love my soddie jrs. Have a yellow CV that’s about 18 years old and a black jigged delrin handled one my wife got me. Those were my EDCs for years. Those and a Case Peanut. But ever since I bought this full sized Soddie, the Jrs feel so dang small! I was never a big knife guy, although I did EDC an Elephamt Toe, so after that, the weight of a large soddie in my pocket is nothing. Lol
Double check that old timer bruin, my buddy got one that was suppose to be 1095 high carbon and went to force a patina and absolutely nothing happened, tried tons of different methods and absolutely no discoloration happened, emailed old timer and got no reply, was very odd because I’ve forced patinas on tons of 1095 and it always took it very quick.
The more pocket knives I have the less any one gets abused. I’m a lifetime angler and 70 years old. Years ago CASE was the knife to own. Of course we all had our Buck Knives. Schrade was another favorite brand. The blade design lends itself to many tasks including BUSHCRAFT tasks. I’m no longer a fan of slip joints. My favorite edc now has to be some of my Cold Steel s35vn Folders. I also carry a falkniven dual sided pocket stone. 1095 steel is absolutely fine in my opinion as well.
I guarantee people her in Cali would lose their shit over a Sodbuster as bad as an auto. I got the cops called on me a few years ago for "brandishing a combat knife" because some Karen in the Wal Mart parking lot saw me using a SAK to open up a toy I had just bought for my nephew who I was watching after my brother's near-fatal accident. Apparently the "Army" part of the SAK name makes it a combat knife in my fellow commiefornians' eyes. Karen got laughed at by the cops and nailed for a false 911 call 🤣
