      I don't think there are any Moroccans at La Guera - it's completely abandoned, and not even the military are there the last I heard. It's completely 'no man's land'.

      @soufianeuli 2 дня назад +3

      It might be the case but it's an expression we Moroccans say. It speaks to our pride and defense of our territories against any separatists!

      Personally, I think that Morocco should go and set up its presence at La Guera (it is very dangerous for tourists to visit otherwise). I wanted to visit, but I didn't want to leave and re-enter Mauritanian territory illegally by crossing the sand trail.

      Yes it does! Still has a bit of a ways to go for tourism development. However, until the travel advisories warning against travel to Western Sahara are lifted by most Western governments, no travel agencies will be working to promote the destination. Like it or not, travel to Dakhla means giving up your travel insurance and consular assistance, in the event of an emergency. That is a turn-off to most travelers.

    Brother, did you get the eVisa for Mauritania? Apparently they changed it on 5th of january that visa on arrival is not available anymore and evisa is required, can you tell me if its also for the land border crossing?

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  22 часа назад

      No, I got the visa on arrival! I note in my next video about this change, and that anyone crossing after January 5th needs the e-visa. If you're crossing from Guerguerat into Mauritania, as far as I know you will need the e-visa, and they won't process visas on arrival any longer. Would love if someone could test this out, to see if its actually mandatory to do it online (something tells me money talks at this border, so I bet you could probably get a sticker if you tried - but don't quote me 😂)

    Au lieu du mot annexion , vous auriez mieux fait d’utiliser le mot libération . Car le Sahara était marocain avant l’occupation par l’Espagne . Et Hassan II l’a libéré.
    Annexion sous entend que ce territoire a appartenu a un pays voisin .

      It's the word that the United Nations uses to describe Morocco's takeover of the Rio de Oro region without it first being resolved via international law. I won't veer from the neutral UN position.

      Depends - security was much more tight in Laayoune and the police stopped me multiple times. But, cameras are much more tolerated in Morocco than in neighbouring Mauritania. In Senegal and Guinea-Bissau are also pretty chill - like Morocco. Guinea-Conakry is probably the worst for cameras, though, with Mauritania and Djibouti following closely. Lots of paranoia in West Africa.

I hope the series inspires more people to travel to this unique region, despite the complexity of having one's travel insurance be void, the slight risk of terrorism, and the scrutiny that one faces here as an independent traveller. Not a super interesting city, but very interesting to see what it's like there anyway. I agree it was a little nicer than I would have expected for being so remote and not very well known. But it looks like a pleasant place to spend a day or two. At 6:05 in the video when you're inside the church I'm guessing the flickering is because the electrical system in Morocco runs at 50hz, but you were filming at 60fps, 30fps or some other frame rate. Likely that you already know about this, but if you're able to film at 50fps then that should stop the flickering effect. However not all cameras have that option, my Gopro doesn't have the option to film at 50fps. I film with the DJI Osmo and it does have that option, so when I'm in Europe or anywhere else that operates at 50hz I just leave my camera at 50fps to avoid the flickering. Or maybe I got this all wrong and you were actually filming at 50fps. Anyway loving this series, super curious to see western Africa, I bet it's going to get a lot more lively and exciting.

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  2 дня назад +3

      Hey man! I definitely wasn't familiar with that hack, so I should try that next time. I usually film in 30 fps so I'll definitely remember this. I think Dakhla is most alluring for its watersports (which I'm not into) but was a reasonable place to spend a couple of nights and enjoy an actual beachfront restaurant before heading south to the Mauritania border. My next video is pretty wild - walking across the No Man's Land between border posts. Definitely worth visiting this part of Africa if you're ever game to do so!

    Tell me sir why do you say: “disputed”?
    Have you ever met someone in this area disputing anything?
    This video is in your own channel and you might say and write what you want!
    So you are the only one making this area disputed, nobody else!

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  Час назад

      I cite the United Nations’ official declaration of Western Sahara as a disputed territory. Google Maps (and every map in the Western world used since childhood) shows it as disputed with Morocco split into two colours with a dashed border. You can email them with your complaints if you are not satisfied with world geography:

    Did you ask the people there about their stance on the conflict?

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  2 дня назад +5

      No, it is best to not discuss politics whatsoever while in the area! My Foreign Affairs department advised against it, as it could be interpreted as dissention or sedition, even if you choose to remain neutral in line with the United Nations. Moroccans can be very fierce about the issue, so focus on enjoying the region as de facto Moroccan territory and you'll have no issues. I suspect you'd be immediately detained and deported if you were to even use the term "Western Sahara" - it's that sensitive. See my video about the logistics of travelling here for more information about what to expect:

      @@DrifterDave Wow, I didn't realize it was to the point that you shouldn't even use the term Western Sahara, will definitely keep that in mind if I ever go there.

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  2 дня назад +1

      Definitely keep a tight lip and avoid using the UN-prescribed name for the region. Moroccans equate the term with some sort of political expression of support for the Sahrawi Arab Republic's Polisario Front militia, when it is simply the internationally recognized term for the disputed region. Better safe than sorry!

      @@DrifterDave the United Nations is not sacred. You make it seem like you have to use their terms even in the video's title. Relax they are not God but just a few people and human like everyone else who run it. the United Nations supports different things that some countries. organizations, or people disagree with. the United Nations I believe overall is a good thing to have in the world stage than not to, but we're not naive to not understand that big countries uses it to maintain conflicts in the disguise of wanting to solve problems with political discussions, but the real intention is to make some conflicts to last forever to give big powers a leverage against those countries with those unresolved issues that they help to maintain for decades. With or without them Western Sahara was, is, and will always be Moroccan. It is that simple for us. Morocco allow politicians play the UN game that has not and will not solve the issue while the beautiful Western Sahara is under the control of Morocco like any other Moroccan region

    • @DrifterDave
      @DrifterDave  19 часов назад

      It's the easiest way to stay neutral on my channel. The Moroccan/Western Sahara dispute is one of many globally. I have a lot of viewers with contrary opinions, and it's not my place to get involved or chime into the discussion. My channel is a big tent and people from all walks of life and political beliefs are welcome, as long as they express their beliefs in a respectful manner. I'm not a defender of the UN in all cases (who could do any worse in Rwanda than they did?) but in terms of disputed territories, I always choose neutrality on my channel. Both sides can figure it out with the UN as they so wish.
