Anica Mann is carrying the burden of the Orientalist/ imperial school of thought which after independence was catered by the Marxist school of thought. That's why she said Brahminism instead of referring to them as Yogis and Hindus. The term was first coined by Gonçalo Fernandes Trancoso. (1520-1596) in the 16th century. Under the Vanaprasht tradition, Sanyasis belong to the strata of society. They mediated and become yogis and developed philosophy. How Samrat Ashoka became a Buddhist ? = After seeing the the heaps of body and river of blood during kalinga war .King Ashoka was haunted by these pictures and had nightmares which gave him sleepless nights and depression. During his visit to Sanchi ( his maternal uncle country ) he saw a 7 years old young vikshu and he was curious about him . He asked this 7 years if he can teach , he said the dhamma cannot be given in a casual way. Then Ashoka asked him to his royal guest house and then this young vante told him that those who gave dharma and those who listen dharma cannot be seated in place and then he asked Samrat Ashoka to be seated in the Throne . And then he said a teaching which essence is that " Those who practice mindfulness ( sati)doesn't have to die , one who practice sati gradually reaches the birth and deathless mokshya but who doesn't they are like in death already". Samrat Ashoka was amazed by this little Vante's teaching and asked about his guru , the little vante said he resides in Ashoka Ram vihar in Patali putra and his name is "Upa gupta ".Nowadays, some people are trying to change this historical fact because of their own political agenda , which is nothing but a false propaganda .
