    Make sure to stay to end on this one, LOL. My feline family members had a lot to say about IR control from Apple TV 4K...

    Here's a simple little hack for having the Apple TV Remote control the Power On/Off for your TV. I find that I don't use the Mute button on the Apple TV Remote very often. So, I followed the video here to Learn a New Remote for Volume Control. I set the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons from my AV System Remote volume buttons. But, when it was asking me to set the Mute button, I pointed the TV Remote at the Apple TV and pressed/held the Power button. It learned this for the Mute button. So now, the "Mute" button on the Apple TV Remote controls my TV Power On and Power Off functions. Maybe some day Apple will provide more flexibility to program other than the volume keys. But, until that time, this works! 👍

      That's a real genius idea! I might steal that for a video!

      Be my guest! Turning the TV on was the ONLY thing that I had to pull a 2nd remote out for. I knew about the setting of different volume controls as your video describes. But I didn't know until I watched yours that there wasn't a way to actually set the power button. After you told me that, it got me thinking... So, THANK YOU!

    Make sure your Apple TV and Remote are up to date. I hooked up a new Apple TV 4K a few days ago. Yesterday I followed your instructions to set up the Apple TV remote to control the volume on my Yamaha HT Receiver. It worked, but the next time but the next time I turned the set on it did not work. I deleted the Yamaha description I had entered and tried to set it up several times with no luck. Then I watched a video on how to update the Apple TV and also how to update the remote. My Apple TV was brand new from Apple but neither the box nor the remote were up to date. I updated them both and then went through your instructions above and now everything works fine. Thanks.

    I have a Vizio sound bar connected via optical and I went through the process of having the Apple TV learn the devices remote. It went through fine but when I try to use it nothing happens. I’ve tried resetting the remote, Apple TV and soundbar still nothing. Any help?

    Thanks for your info on the Apple TV. I have been frustrated with handshake issues between ATV4K and Sony 4K TVs. It seems every time there is an update on one of the TVs I have to reconfigure things just to get communication going. I am using power strips with switches to power my ATV4Ks down and back up to get a signal. I have one setup going directly into a TV in my office (ARC) via HDMI and one setup going into a Samsung Q950A via HDMI (8K rated) into the eArc port on a TV in my living room. Since I have problems on each I conclude the problem is more because of the OS in the TVs than the Samsung.

    Is there a way to add the power button from the sound bar remote? Unless I have mine configured wrong, when I use the Apple TV remote to turn the tv on it won’t turn on the sound bar automatically so I still have to use that remote to turn the sound bar on but once it’s on I can continue the volume with the Apple TV

      You can't directly, but the hack it to turn the mute button into audio device power.

      @@Techthusiasm As I mentioned to SocialSteee in a previous response, my appleTV 4k remote sometimes turns the soundbar receiver and Sony TV on/off with the appleTV, but other times does not. Thinking that might because I have a Bravia TV and Bravia-compatible soundbar connected using the HDMI Arc port. Occurrence might depend on where I am in menus when I go to shut the system down. Overall, it is still better than Tivo, although I was a fan back in their early days.
      One other thing I’ve found, before I hooked up the soundbar I could airplay to the appleTV from my iPhone 13 or my iPad (an original iPad Pro that no longer accepts recent OS updates). Now neither will airplay to the appleTV. Not a significant problem for me as I can get everything I generally use by going through the appleTV menus, but it seems like airplay should function as it did before I connected the soundbar. These two issues are pretty much the first time Apple support has not been able to fix an issue with one of my devices.

    another great video. Can I use this to control power on an older tv that doesn't support CEC. Would like the atv4k remote to control power and volume on a basic 10 year old Sanyo tv rarely used in a guest bedroom.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Год назад

      You can train the ATV remote to control volume of anything you have an IR remote for. Unfortunately, it cannot learn IR codes for power control though. They need to add this.

    What happens when you connect apple tv to a full hd 1080p which supports 4k via hdmi , will the video be upscaled?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  9 месяцев назад +1

      The ATV should just output at 1080p to match the display, I would think. If the TV is 1080p, but still takes 4K and indicated that over HDMI, then I suppose the ATV could output 4K, but then the TV will downscale that image to its pixel count.

    Why are using optical instead of HDMI for audio? do you have Atmos in this room?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Год назад +2

      I have 4 video sources for this space and the TV has 4 HDMI inputs. The audio system is 2.2 (Focal speakers and Triad subs) using an Anthem STR. So no big multi-channel in there. The STR doesn't have an HDMI input anyway. So optical works great.

    I've been using this feature for years and it has been great! However, a week ago I installed the latest TvOS beta update for 16 and now my Apple TV remote no longer sends IR commands. I went ahead and enrolled the Apple TV (4K gen 3) in the v17 beta and after installing it, the remote still doesn't send IR commands any longer. I then deleted the training (per your video) and readded my remote and re-taught it. Still, no IR commands being sent. Interestingly (and this is different from normal), but when pressing the volume up/down/mute, the white light on the Apple TV flashes. Prior to this problem, those buttons did not cause that light to blink. I think this just another indicator that the remote is not sending IR but instead is sending those button presses (wirelessly) to the Apple TV itself.
    If you have suggestions on how to get around this, let me know please. I have reported this to Apple but haven't gotten any feedback. Thanks!

    Hello! I am considering buying an Apple TV, mainly for the possibility of using the remote control to control an amplifier.
    I'll explain:
    I have an Accuphase E-212 amplifier, not recent for sure, but extremely good and performing. This amplifier has its own IR remote control that can throw a number of simple commands such as turning the volume up or down rather than changing inputs.
    I already own a 4K Fire Stick but unfortunately I cannot teach it the remote control commands of this amplifier.
    Do you think with a Siri Remote this would work? I am not interested in on/off or anything else. Just being able to control the volume of this amplifier via IR port would be enough for me.
    Thanks!

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, the ATV can learn any IR for volume up/down and mute.

      I recently switched my living room to an appleTV4k from a cable/Tivo setup. I’m liking the appleTV as Tivo has not been good since they got rid of their thumbs up/down control. Currently using a Sony Bravia TV and Bravia-compatible Sony soundbar that has it’s own separate receiver with additional HDMI ports (both about 6-7 years old), until I upgrade to a larger TV and maybe different speakers (Sonos or Homepod possibly) . My current setup uses the HDMI ARC connection on TV (HDMI 1) to the soundbar receiver. That works pretty well, but sometimes my apple remote is not shutting down the soundbar receiver and when that happens it also does not shut off the TV, just the appleTV. Then I have to use the TV or soundbar remote to turn those off. Other times it shuts down the TV, appleTV, and the soundbar receiver all together. I really prefer the convenience of only using one remote unless I am changing equipment setup. I’ve only had the appleTV several weeks and am still trying to figure out if there is a pattern to when the shutdown doesn’t happen correctly. If anyone knows why this occurs intermittently, I’d appreciate hearing about it - and any possible fixes.

    What I don't get, is that I can learn my soundbar remote with the applt tv remote for volume and mute but it cant learn the power button for on/off. I mean i would be turning on and off all of my hardware at the same time anyway, so why not the option?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  10 месяцев назад +2

      Correct, the ATV Siri remote can only learn IR for volume management. For power control, it has to use CEC only.
