Kevin loves Italian design, and Pathos is no different from his favorite Italian brands in both build quality and ability to form an emotional connection. The Pathos Aurium is a pure class-A hybrid--the tube pre couples with a MOSFET power stage offering a sound that is delicate on top but with lots of air, and a terrific bottom end.

@@psysword I do not know how to use it as a preamp but there are two types of "Tape output" in the back: XLR and RCA. I never used any of these, i use the headphone jack on the front panel.

Not for me, not balanced, tubes attach to board, cheap external power supply. I do like the gain controls and the amp looks good. Maybe if it was priced around $700 it would be better, maybe. However when you can get the Schiit Lyr for $499 (amp only) or $599 with AK4490 DAC or $699 with multibit DAC the Pathos just cannot hold up against the Lyr !
However this is just my opinion, however I would urge you to listen to both before you buy.

But for me at least, this 'wealth' as a passion for Italian vehicles and a self-described gearhead, is refreshing in the cerebral gated community of high-end audio retailers. Those who delight in mechanical passions have a broader, more-realistic perspective of the audio world IMO. And 'wealth' is pretty much a given today in the high-end audio world :-(

First it's high end headphones, now its high end headphone amps. Nice if you live in a tiny apt. in the city. But isn't music for sharing? Spending your hard earned cash on that system you want to blow your friends away with and make them want into the wonderful hobby? I see so much of this headphone stuff anymore. I'm thinking it's more like , people don't know what they want until you show them. Sorry but not to many people are driving Hummers now days. Share the sound, share the hobby.

Get fx. an audioquest 3.5 to phono, that would be the best. No point getting a balanced cable since the amp is single ended.
I’d use a dual female XLR into the tape out of the Aurium to 4.4mm pentagon (male) cable into the ibasso. Tape out gives you a fixed output and you’ll utilize your balanced output VRMS options of your Ibasso DAP.
