You made my year with this one, banana man. There has never been a SINGLE 240gr .454 Casull ballistics gel test in the history of the internet. You are the first person EVER to shoot gel with that round, and I've been waiting YEARS for it to be done.
Yeah, this channel is gonna blow up. He's got so much great content and is showing no signs of slowing down. He's definitely going to eventually join the 'million subscribers' club. 🎉
I was at a Sportsman warehouse back in the 90s and I ran into I believe Jack Fullmer, one of the engineers who designed the Freedom Arms 454. At the time I was having issue with mine. Mine was field grade and it had the pachmayr grip. He said put on a wood grip because the gun was suppose to rock when shot. He did say something interesting. The velocities and pressures the gun was made to handle well, his demonstration gun was loaded to "100000" cups,(not a typo), not the low 65000 cups as stated. a 260 grain bullet at 1800 fps was the starting point for loading. DON'T try that with those weak Rugers. I had one and the Rugers cylinder had ridges so deep I could not eject the shells. The freedom arm 1983 is the real hand cannon. I don't believe my S&W 460 magnum could handle that pressures.
Another banger, banana man. You're well on your way to a million well deserved subscribers. You just kinda came out of nowhere but you're desication and creativity will inevitably pay off. Here's to ya. 👍
I dunno about you, but I don't think he looks desiccated... humans are about 70% water, after all, and I'm guessing he's no different. Sorry, dry humor. Yes, I know you meant 'dedicated' and just made a typo haha.
your channel and your content is top notch! Really enjoyed this set of tests. Can we see one with the 454 460 480 and throw a 45-70 outta a pistol? That's would be amazing! Keep up the bad assery!
.480 is tough to find. I like Hodgdon L'iL Gun for reloading. I get the best velocity out of a handgun with it. 410 grain WFN LBT from Grizzly Cartridge. I use H4227 in my Levergun with the same bullets.
Never been hands on with a .480. Gotta be a handful. The 454 I've launched hundreds of projectiles downrange with, and .44 even more. One of my former employers carried a .454 snubby as a daily carry, not a lady to piss off. With the 1st Gen Freedom Arms .454 we found that after a few cylinders it was best to go back thru and tighten up all the screws. My personal choice even over the .500 S&W among the monster wheelguns. I need more ammo than that, so it's 10mm with a full stack.
I bought some 454 revolvers when it first came out, a 7.5 inch, a 6 inch and a 3 inch barrel, which doesn't have an ejector rod. The 7.5 inch is a Field Grade, the 6 inch has an upgraded factory cylinder bushing and is a premium grade, as is the 3 inch model. I liked the rubber grip on the Field Grade so much, I added it to the others. When I first bought them, loaded ammo was $45 for a box of 50 and empty cases were $22 for a box of 50. The revolvers included load data.
The .480 Ruger is actually kind of the opposite of the usual regular cartridge => magnum cartridge relationship. In this case, the .475 Linebaugh is the big magnum cartridge and the .480 Ruger is the lighter, easier shooting version that came along later. Not that the .480 Ruger is some weakling, but it offers an easier to shoot big bore that is still very capable against things on which you might want to use a big bore. And yes, they are compatible, so you can shoot 480 Ruger from a 475 Linebaugh gun. I don't know if it would sell all that well, but the 480 Ruger is only marginally longer than a .44 Magnum which means that you could theoretically have a big bore in both a Ruger wheel gun AND in a new Marlin 1894 lever gun. Capacity should be about the same as well. Marlin lists the capacity of the 1894 Classic with a 20" barrel at 10 rounds of 44 Mag. The SBL 1894 with the 16" barrel has a capacity of 8 rounds of 44 Mag. An 16" barrel 1894 in .480 Ruger would offer a really handy, light carbine with lots of oomph if you should need it. And it could share the ammo with the revolver on your belt.
Another test you can do to compare rounds is 5 shots on target, quickly. It will show how large the group is compared to the power, and how quickly one should expect to get five rounds on target (a difference of 4/5 hits on target with the weaker gun in five seconds is arguably a metric to compare to the strongest gun getting 2/5 shots on target in 9 seconds)
@3:00 I agree, the Kore Essentials EDC belt is definitely a game changer. I went from using a regular dress belt straight to using one of these Kore Essentials at least nine months ago and it's the kind of thing that makes you wonder where was this belt all my life LOL
Lived in Alaska my whole life. I've owned and carried all of those calibers, but I go with the 480 Ruger mostly. A bit l3ss recoil than the 454 and you can get really good penetration with hardcats
I love the dude but have thought this since I first discovered his channel it definitely invalidates results in the lumber test frequently and probably affects the results of the steel tests as well. He built multiple sleds to hold these targets in a way that would ensure consistent results but the expansion by adjacent shots in the same target pretty much makes all that fabrication effort null.
If your want a hot load for the 44 mag. try 19 grains of Blue dot powder a 200 grain hollow point and mag primer. One huge word of caution do not fire this load in any other guns but the Ruger black hawk or the red hawk or an interarm Viridian Dragoon . Now this the warning from the reloading book. The book clams 2160 fps

I have an order blued taurus Raging Bull in 454, and it's actually very controllable and easy to shoot with proper technique. A 260 bullet at over 1900 ft. per second is nothing to sneeze at. But I also have a Ruger super Blackhawk bisley grips and shooting the same 260 gr bullet at over 1450 ft/sec is a handful (ouch) more powerful than the 44 mag with less pressure. I've seen a lot of tests buy different gun magazines back in the day, and the 454 always out performed the 480 Ruger. 480 Ruger 48,000 psi max 454 casull 60,000 psi max I only watch banana ballistics for entertainment. His test doesn't have any real-world validation to the bullets and calibers' relationship to hunting and how they perform on living tissues. Take a 45-70 loaded with black powder cartridges 405 gr, they perform way out of Proportion to what the ballistics tell you they will.
I love these calibers. I almost purchased a 480 ruger, I already have the Casull and I love it. It's a heavy hitter in a reasonable sized frame compared to the 500 Smith. It actually fits in a holster.
my understanding is the 480 was meant to be a reasonable supermag, a less powerful, yet still sufficient cartridge that can be more controlled to get shots on target faster and easier without sacrificing too much power.
No, the .480 Ruger was meant to be a regular magnum caliber, hence it having the same case length as the .357 Mag, .41 Mag, .44 Mag and .45 Colt AKA ".45 Long Colt".
@@silvermane1741I’m just curious why you can’t never find any of it on the shelves? I’m not that familiar with the round but did it not become as popular as these other big bore cartridges?
Just a thought Banana, once you shoot the block of wood, I doubt that it has the same strength when the second round hits it. You might want to try a one shot per block approach and see if there is a difference in result.

Elmer Keith's performance goal for the 44 mag was his 250 gr hard cast bullet at 1250 fps, for years I deer hunted with the nosler 240gr hollow point over blue dot at just about 1300 fps and was always satisfied with the performance and enjoyed using the loading, can't understand why anyone thinks they have to have 1500+ fps loads...

@@watermann8200 That's not true; most 10mm is NORMAL-powered, and some loads are OVER-powered. Norma themselves decided the original 10mm load was overpowered, and they reduced it soon after it came out. The FBI never used that overpowered original load, because again, Norma decided that the original load shouldn't be the normal 10mm load. 10mm fanboys would claim 9mm +P+ is "real 9mm," and then claim "nearly all 9mm on the market is underpowered." That's ass backwards thinking.
They're not "underpowered," they're standard loadings. For instance, Winchester white box 240gr is a standard load for .44 Magnum. It seems underpowered when you compare it to some of the Buffalo Bore options but that's because they load hotter than standard.
Two cheap belts, with 2 five to ten pounds weights, one on each side, will hold down your gel. Excellent tests. ❤ I bought the 44 for exactly this reason. If you're doing the big Smiths go ahead and use the 475 linebaugh.
