His death hit me cause I was a teen in the 80s and enjoyed his work over the years. I had no idea my wife would be gone a little over a year later. Its hit me like nothing else in my life and Im not and never will recover. RIP to all.

Daehawk So very sorry for your loss. I'm sure she is always with you in spirit. Yes, Tom's death hit me hard to!!!. I grew up with TP & his heartbreakers as basically a soundtrack to my life, always his music kind of running in the background of my teenaged years. I saw him during his very first years and first album released and then I saw him again later on in their career, just a few years back. Both times at venues in Atlanta . It was a real shock to me as well. So glad he left such a huge library of wonderful music for all generations to come! There will never be another one like Tom! I always believed there was something truly special about Tom petty! I remember buying the single Living like a Refugee in my early teens and playing it over and over again! Along with his band their musical presence on stage was phenomenal...uplifting and honest musical brilliance that gave each song time to tell its story! RIP Tom! Another awesome analysis Fil! Apart from everything else, it's just lovely to hear Tom Petty's fine slurred southern dialect together with a really fantastic live band. They were really great and I am proud to have followed them closely for almost 40 years. Miss you all. Rest in peace Tom.

You should watch Jimmy Dore's show the day after Tom Petty died. Ron is a musician, and Jimmy smoked pot so he knew Tom's music. And they started talking about his songs, and his songs, and his songs, and it went on. A very fitting tribute.

Saw Tom and the Heartbreakers in Boston, MA just a few months before he passed and it was a fantastic show. Not only musically, but Tom was just so humble and thankful of the crowd’s show of love. It was a terrific concert and I am so happy I got to see him before his premature passing. RIP Tom.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers put on the best concert ever. They could rock and how I hate it, that I will never see them in person again. The day he died, I cried all day. That was one of the greatest loses the rock world ever experienced. Wow! What beautiful music. RIP Tom. Tell your friend George Harrison, another beloved rocker of mine , I said, " Rock On!" You keep on hitting on stuff with deep meaning to me. I will share this one real quick. A day or two after Tom Petty died in October 2017, I was at my sacred spot deep in the woods where I do most of my songwriting. I have been a big fan of Petty since I was a kid. I sat there alone with a bonfire burning, contemplating his death, life and music.
I looked up at the sky, which is almost completely shrouded by trees except for a small circle of sky. Right in the middle of that small circle of sky was the Full Moon, shining down to me. I looked at the bonfire and then back up at the small sliver of sky displaying the Full Moon...
"Full Moon Fire", I thought to myself.
And then, like an electric charge, it hit me...
Tom Petty's big 1989 solo album was "Full Moon Fever".
That inspired me to write one of my favorite songs, "Full Moon Fire", in Tom Petty's honor.
Sorry to slam you with comments lately, but your vids are hitting me personally. Once again, keep up the good work!

Tom Petty was one of those unique artists. Not a classic singing voice and the majority of his songs were very simple 4 or 5 chord compositions. But God, they were so good, so melodic and so catchy.
Melinda is one of my favorite songs by TPATH! Been nearly 2 years since we lost him. RIP
So happy you featured Tom Petty. Mike Campbell is an awesome guitar player. Their songs make me happy but also cry at the sadness of Tom's death. You are correct that not one of them overplays over one another. I have all of their music and just love, love them. Also, EVERYONE loved Tom. Back in the early eighties, someone gave me a tape without the case. It was The Traveling Wilburys. I played it every morning before work not paying attention to who the singers were. I knew them individually, but wow. I still play their CDs at least once a week. Thanks, Fil.

I agree good sir. I graduated in the eighties and they had great songs from the late seventies, eighties and nineties. American Girl, breakdown...my favorite was you got lucky. Last dance with Mary Jane a great one and so many more. His duo with Stevie another excellent song.

Of course, Mike Campbell tours with Fleetwood Mac now. This video made me dig out my Concert For George DVD, where Petty and the Heartbreakers played "Taxman" and "Handle Me With Care". Tom reminisces about how the latter song was written, and about George's use of augmented and diminished chords (which he called his naughty chords). There were so many good performances in that concert (especially the ones with Clapton and McCartney together). Something about this video makes me want to try playing the strings of a piano with an E-Bow.
Campbell was also responsible for one of the most memorable pop tunes of the 1980's-Boys Of Summer by Don Henley which he wrote the music for, he was given Henley's number by Henley's producer as Henley was looking for new songs, he played it over the phone & Henley then wrote the lyrics to it.
I'm enjoying Mike Campbell with Fleetwood Mac. The naysayers say that Lindsay Buckingham was replaced by two guitarists. But what guitarists. What songwriters. (Stop draggin' my heart around is a Petty/Campbell song. They knew exactly what they were getting when they signed on Mike Campbell. There is history.)

Great video. Back in the “old days” the radio play only focused on the hits & I got a little over saturated with Petty. This video reminds me he was really a talent & I need to re-explore some of his more obscure stuff.

The first Petty album was pretty much my intro to rock and roll.... American Girl still my favorite tune... Mike Campbell's playing is a great example of serving the song.
Fleetwood Mac just played near me and I didn't get to see them. But fans are uploading great videos from that New Orleans show of the group paying tribute to Tom Petty with Stevie Nicks singing "Free Fallin'" during the encore with a picture montage of Tom on a screen behind the band and right at the end of the song there's a touching moment where Stevie and Mike Campbell (with their back to the audience) stare up at a huge picture of Tom with Stevie putting her hand on Mike's back. Very touching. I wish I would have been there.

I was in high school when Tom Petty and Heartbreakers came on the scene, and I was a lifelong Tom Petty fan. I finally got to see him live in concert in 2014, and it was the BEST concert I've ever been to! It was a magical night that I will never, ever forget.
When I found out Tom died, I was absolutely devastated. I was at work that day, and a co-worker came around and asked if I'd heard Tom Petty died. I was absolutely shocked, and I didn't believe her at first (didn't want to believe her). But I quickly realized it was true, and my heart sank.
Whenever a song of his comes on the radio in the car I blast the volume way up, and I remember all the happiness his songs have given me over the many years. And I remember the best concert EVER!
I'm a big fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I've seen them live several times. They always put on a great show and the energy of the band was wonderful and like no other band.
A band and a singer/songwriter that continually grew and progressed from the beginning to the final recording and tour. Amazing how they could break a song down and go around the stage and each play a solo, and gather it right back together and continue on with the song.

In Georgia we called him a hometown boy. When they were starting up they played the hell out of the southeast.
For years I didn't like Tom Petty. Didn't get him at all. Then I saw an interview with him and the interviewer asked him Why does your band sound the way it does?", and he got that little grin he had and said "It's rock and roll, it's not supposed to be THAT good". At that moment I understood everything I needed to about him. He was playing what he liked, and that was FAR more "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians than anything by Boston, for instance. He LIKED that there was danger in the sound, that at any minute, someone could make a HUGE mistake and it would be left in. He liked the rawness, the HUMAN aspect of R&R.
Since then, I've had a real appreciation of him and his music. I listened to it with a whole new set of ears, and I LIKE the guy's music, now. It was my own lack of understanding that got in the way. Funny thing is, I like the old raw stuff, too, so we had that in common. I was saddened to hear of his death, and am sorry we didn't get to hear what else he would have come up with.

Beautiful track! Tom Petty was one of the best live shows I've seen. It's powerful to have a packed amphitheater singing every word to every song. You should check out some performances by The Outlaws. They were probably the best live show I've seen. Great guitar work.

One of the best American songwriters, with one of the best American bands of the past 4 decades.
Their "House Band" status for the closing of the Fillmore West was legendary. The material released from that last week shows the band really firing on all cylinders.

Saw them in 82 at the US festival. The best band I ever saw what a machine other worldly. the sound seemed physical like giant blocks of sound. So tight

That's why Tom was such an over achiever, he was a great artist, and his band members complimented Tom, and vice versa... So glad you talked about Tom Petty. Listening to his songs he did get better vocally with age. I got lost in his video "You don't know how it feels" not because of the words but with the melody & rhythm of the song and of course the close up of him the whole time with those eyes! I love artist who sing & tell a story like you Fil with "Don't Cry"(btw I wish you would have done a close up on your face) , Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison's "Someone like you" Bap Kennedy's "Moonlight Kiss", etc. Songs that are so real & romantic. 😍😚💕👏🤗

Thanks Fil!…… I so miss Tom... I wish I had been able to see him perform in May 2017 but I had transportation issues and couldn’t go. Then when I heard in October he had passed I was so shocked, sad and regretful that I had missed the opportunity to see him live. I am not familiar with this track but hearing the name made me think of my grandmother on my mother’s side whose name was Melinda. I never knew her because I was only three when she passed away of cancer....✌️❤️🤘

I saw Tom Petty in 1987 on the Rock And Roll Caravan tour. What a show he and the band put on! SO great! I'd been a Tom Petty fan since 1979 when Refugee was on the radio along with 'Don't Do Me Like That'. I was 11 and had just started playing guitar a year earlier. Those were magical times I'll never forget!

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers have always been my favorite band. I can remember exactly when and where it was the first time I heard American Girl. I used to have this crush on this beautiful girl from High School, and the song really kind of framed "in my mind" who I dreamt she was. Their first album(?) was the first 8-track (remember those) I ever bought and I played it til it seized in the player. As good as their first album was, their second album, "You're Gonna Get It", in my opinion is their best and probably most overlooked. I always thought Mike Campbell was one of the best guitarist's out there, not because he pulls off mind blowing solo's, but because he has this "what I call" light touch a way of finding the right notes to highlight certain parts of a song. You mention his work with Don Henley in the song "Boys of Summer", which is a great example of his style of play. Another good example is the song "Hurt" off their second album. Sometime before Tom passed away, my nephew had a chance to sit in on a session with Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and he never mentioned anything about it until well after the fact. I should have kicked his little punk ass.

I grew up in a small town in central Fl about an hour away from Gainesville, my friend attended the University of Fl so I was fortunate enough to attend a few Gator football games, the gators didn't win much back then, (late 70's) but the frat parties afterwards were over the top!!! Was lucky enough to attend one of those parties and Mr Petty was rocking the house :-) Don't remember much, but I remember he was there ;-) Another superb review sir, thank you for that trip down memory lane!!! It's great to see a young musician so interested in what got us here and why, again, thank you :-)

I agree, they were fantastic in the beginning then aged like fine wine. I was fortunate to see the True Confessions tour in the mid 80s with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - that was pretty special.

I have just gotten into the Heartbreakers this year and last year. This song is one of my favorites. I went to the Heartbreakers part of youtube, and listened to several Heartbreakers songs. I could not find another song with Tom Petty playing acoustic guitar. They are an excellent band. This live song is very good. I love how the band is so connected, Fil mentioned how they looked at each other once in awhile til his son was born. ,

Tom has written so many classic songs ,its so impressive,I saw a concert on TV,and virtually every track was a classic,such high quality,playing from all the band.
I went to a Tom Petty concert in Florida in 1991 and loved it. I also saw him at the Rupp Arena in 2002 and it was even better.

That was such an amazing performance, what a pure Joy that was to listen to! It was my second year in the military and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released ( damn the torpedoes ) , that album was such a hit and everybody I knew bought a copy.

I have enjoyed the line-up you've had over the past week and to top it off with Tom Petty is icing on the cake. Such a nice guy who was respected by other musicians. Saw on a doco that Bob Dylan doesn't give out many compliments but he wanted Tom to be in the Travelling Wilburys. Hope you consider an analysis of the TW's one day.

I’ve been a huge Tom Petty fan since I heard Breakdown from the FM movie soundtrack. I think. That’s also when I first heard Steely Dan’s song FM. Don’t know for sure if it was written for the movie but I think so. I’m a little fuzzy on the details. I had a lot of things competing for my attention guitar, girls, and other recreational items I enjoyed at the time. Some still. Mostly legal.lol.

What really improved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was their year long tour with Bob Dylan in 1986. Dylan would change things up each song, each session and Tom and the band had to be on their toes at all times as they never knew what to expect, which they eventually embraced as exciting for them and they grew as musicians. It was this tour that also brought that Dylan singing style to Tom Petty. Sometimes he sounds just like Dylan. Petty said there was no one else in the whole world he would have done a backup for besides Dylan.
I am in the L.A. area and Dylan and Petty became as close as two friends can be and they each owned homes in the Malibu area. Tom named Dylan as Executor of his estate in the event both he and his wife both passed away, saying that he didn't know anyone else as honest as Bob Dylan.
One of the bands that I played their albums over and over.😎😎😎😍😊Loved Tom Petty.

I’m a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I heard someone say what they loved about this group was how you never heard from them until they released a new album. They’d play ona few shows and tour. Then they were gone until they released something new. That seemed true to me about the time I would start missing them, there’d they be with some new stuff! I remember listening (high) to "Breakdown" on my parent's couch. This time period is still my favorite. His sound was so new, and unique. He was very popular in NJ. We were very lucky. We had unbelievable 70s Rock radio stations in Philly. WYOQ, WMMR, WYSP. 'Jane' by Jefferson Starship was another favorite single of mine, during this time.

Seems the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan was the seminal moment for so many future rockers- along with Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt also both cited that historic event as their impetus for making a career in rock ‘n’ roll

Hi Phil. Another great video. I'm a huge Petty fan and was glad to hear you cover him. Also wanted to suggest you do a video on Ike Turner. I've read a little about him and someone noted he was doing things on guitar 10 years prior to Hendrix or Jeff Beck. Just curious to your opinion. Thx.

My first vinyl LP of Tom Petty's was "Hard Promises" with my favorite track the rockin' "Kings Road" (Yes I liked it over the much more popular "The Waiting") The "live" recordings I've seen from the 80's were extended over 6 minutes with Tom and Mike at maximum energy. RIP Tom, give my regards to George, Roy and Del.
Not just a good lead man but a solid band to back him. Thanks Fil. I still think of the time I briefly spoke with him and did not know it was him. It seemed strange watching the video and knowing Tom has passed.
Two deaths that really hit me hard was Glenn Frey and then Tom Petty. Guess I never knew how much I loved those guys, I have listened to them and saw them Live for years and when I heard the news it hit like a ton of bricks and I cried real tears which I never really do even for my own family. Howie also, Howie was the best.
Now he is in the sky. I think he learned how to fly. ✍️😄
Miss Tom very much. His catalog is steller. Mike Campbell is a great guitarist. Tom had a radio show on xm called Buried Treasure. He was a music fanatic like the rest of us!! He brought to my attention alot of artist I had never heard of. Thanks Tom. RIP.
Mike Campbell,is the perfect foil,to Toms vocals,rythmn playing ,some iconic ,lead and rhythm playing from Mike ,so tasteful,and never over indulging ,for the song ,top duo,and Mike,I think,underrated ,just as Keith Scott ,is with Bryan Adams.
