- Up next, one of the greatest living guitarists Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme tells us the story of his band’s hit that he believed in so much that he almost quit the band in protest. The label didn’t want to release More Than Words as a single because there was nothing on radio like it at the time. It was the time of big explosive power ballads and his song was more like a Beatles song… but he knew and singer Gary Cherone knew it was something special so he fought for it… He was right as it became one of the biggest songs ever. #1 hit. Plus he talks about the band’s new record and singles Rise which has the guitar solo of the century the interview is next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest albums and song. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we are going all in with one of the greatest guitarists of the rock era. He came of age as the 80s were ending and the 90s were beginning with an acoustic song that dominated radio. I’m talking about Nuno Bettancourt of the band Extreme and their biggest hit More Than Words.
Up next Nuno tells us how the song was born and that he knew it was something special, even though the record label didn’t support it because it didn’t sound like anything on the radio at the time of Big Power Ballads and Dance Pop... whereas this song sounded more like the Everly Brothers or the Beatles. He also tells us playing guitar on his other big #1 hit of that year and the band’s new music including his unbelievable playing on the new song Rise.

Poll: What is your pick for the greatest acoustic guitar song of the rock era?
"Nutshell" by Alice in Chains
I’m biased since Extreme is my favorite band…
So I’ll say More Than Words because I feel like after this song came out it ushered an age of acoustic that made MTV create Unplugged.
More Thab Words - Extreme
Be With You - Mr. Big
Anything from Unplugged - Nirvana / Dashboard Confessional
Classical Gas - Mason Williams
Romeo & Juliet Dire Straits
Albatross Fleetwood Mac
Bron Yr Aur Led Zeppelin
Willow Joan Armatrading
Fluff Black Sabbath
"Love Song"- Tesla
"Shelter Me"- Cinderella
"Wanted Dead Or Alive"- Bon Jovi
"Layla" (MTV Unplugged version)- Eric Clapton
This song means so much… when my husband was in Iraq during the gulf war he sent me a mixed tape with it on it. I lost him on active duty and every time I hear it it brings tears to my eyes.
It is like Nuno says it’s a moment one that will always be in my heart. ❤❤
Sorry for your loss 😔
@@robinb5047 thank you
I'm sorry you lost him. It's so heartbreaking and I feel so bad for you. People talk of closure, they don't understand there's n such thing. As the years go by that pain, which is physical, you actually feel your heart break, slowly goes away. The pain will always be there, but we learn to live with it. Again so very sorry. Take care.❤💔😞💖💗🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌹🌷🌻🌺🥀
@@janiephillips4842 thank you
Wow. Nuno is such a great interview. Seems like such a class act. You can tell he genuinely respects music in all its forms.
Me too! I love Nuno (a great name by the way).
Ditto.
Thinking the same. An absolute killer guitarist yet humble as can be. He's an inspiration and true musician.
his paul mccartney and eddie stories are legendary. he's fascinating.
Extreme is so much more than "more
words". Grossly underrated band. Thank you for finally shining some light on my favorite band!!
I love Hole Hearted.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Me too. That song was awesome as well
Nuno comes from the Azores Islands (Portugal), his ancestors used to hunt wales (and fistfight sharks, i guess) in turbulent waters, in a rough ambient with rain, earthquakes in the middle of the ocean. That's why he's such a strong character - he built his first guitar with bought parts and he teach himself by playing thousands of hours. Unfortunately he became known as an acoustic guitar balladier and most people didn't realize he's been a top ten shredder through the last three decades! I'm proud of him being a fellow humble working class born portuguese who never forgot his roots. Thank you, Professor of Rock!
I learned a little bit about this in my world history class.
This might be your best interview yet, Professor! Thank you Nuno and Extreme for being amazing for 30+ years. The new song, “Other Side of the Rainbow’ deserves as much success as Rise and even More Than Words. Outstanding album!!!
Yes I agree I love "Other Side of the Rainbow" It's on constant rotation along with Steve Lukather's new songs with "Someone" and "When I See You Again"
I haven’t yet given that new song a listen but now am compelled to!
This comment is obviously an industry plant.
@@TheMotiveDJ Nope. I have been a fan since the first album and saw the tour when Alice In Chains opened up for them back in 1990. It is just awesome to see a band that has been around so long put out an album this good. Can’t wait to see this tour.
@@Hawk512. oops I stand corrected!
Incredible harmonies in this song set it far apart from others at the time for sure! Didn't think Hole Hearted got its due either...
Hole Hearted is great!
@@ProfessorofRockDidn't realize it got as far as #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart!
Really loved Hole-Hearted! That one spoke to me as a young adult!
Love Hole Hearted, another great song.
They had 2 of the best songs of ‘91.
Nuno is such a down to earth, approachable guy. He puts even the biggest fans at ease and loves to visit with authentic people. I love that he plays from a passion for expression and accuracy but doesn't have the big ego to go with his art. Nuno rocks!
Nuno's playing is amazing and whenever he speaks you can see the soul and passion behind it. Great interview!
Hell yeah! Nino getting the props he deserves. One of the greatest guitar players of our generation!
*Nuno
I love how he’s a high school drop out and sounds like he’s always the smartest guy in the room. Same.
Talented guitar dude.
Nuno is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, up there with Brian, Eddie, Jimmy and guys and gals today, who shred. I remember hearing More Than Words on a rock radio station for the first time in March 1991, during March Break and I was so happy. At the same time, I had hoped that Extreme would get popular off of one of their songs which have their normal funk metal sound too, with a Get The Funk Out or even a track like Rise. I love this band, partly because of the Queen connection, but also because of the diversity in the sound. I also remember seeing Extreme in February 1993 at Massey Hall in Toronto with a buddy of mine and our guitar teacher. We went and it was a great show and the one comment I will never forget is my guitar teacher at school wondering out loud "how does Nuno not get tired" when playing his fast solos. I'm so happy that you finally got to chat with Nuno and I hope you will have more to play in a future video.
You really have to be dedicated to that precious guitar, and Nuno always kills it.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 He certainly does, much like someone like Dimebag Darrell.
@@BlindGordie R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell
Album was HUGE in the states. Great to see that Nuno appreciates the parodies of the song ( both well done). 😎
I enjoyed his reaction.
Nuno is an incredible guitarist. Rick Beato did a long form interview with him not too long ago. Fascinating stuff.
The tap on the strings, that percussive playing style, adds the simplexity for this tune, which has such beautiful melody and harmony lines.
I love that tapping.
Simplexity!
I tap my fingers to the string tapping.
I loved the harmonies so much, I sang my own version of it to the original music. REWIND back to 1991... The lead guitarist (the John Lennon) of my band went into the Navy, breaking up the band. As he was waiting outside for the Navy guys to pick him up, he was playing his guitar & singing songs. The whole neighborhood was over there. When he sang "More Than Words," I knew he needed a harmonizing vocal. That was my main function in the band (I was also one of the keyboardists). I harmonized with him, and it was just a magical performance. We never rehearsed it. It was just something that happened, in front of a pretty decent audience. Thinking back on it, that's what made me finally record a version a couple years ago. I did both vocals in my version. 🙂
....did you sing "The Lady In Red", too!??? ...ha-HAAA!! ...Jus'kiddin!!! ....s'cool that you can do that on the spot, and create MAGIC....s'cool, right!???
@@RBS_ I pretty much love every hit song, so I love Lady In Red. My childhood buddy, John, hates that song! LOL! Yeah, the "More Than Words" performance has stuck with me, and I hope it stuck with others who were there to witness it that day. :)
@@BillGraper ...ha-HAAAA!! ....My Best Bud rags on me...Once, I met Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go's) & she thought my name was "Rupaul", and was calling me that the whole NIGHT! ....So whenever I get irate, he calls me that, to rile me up MORE! ...ha-HAAA!!
Thanks for sharing Bill!
Lady in Red! gotta cover that one!
Great interview-it’s so interesting how they pushed forward with that song on the album and chose not to play it. Crazy how a number 1 song can have some adverse effects on the band! Can’t wait to see Extreme in Detroit in august-show sold out so quickly they moved it to a bigger venue. Extreme and Living Colour!!!! Can’t wait-thanks for the interview!!!
My boyfriend was Hawaiian and I'm white so he always wanted to play Hawaiian music or reggae and I always wanted to play punk, new wave, or grunge, but we both agreed on this song! It would get played over and over on repeat. Over the years we both started liking each other's music but this was the first song we had in common.
Nuno has it right! 'Simplexity' is exactly the way I feel about songs like More Than Words, there is so much going on within the 'simple' framework of the song. It engages your heart and your mind but also fills that subconscious need for melody that all great songs give us! Still a favorite!
This song was huge when it came out and it deserved to be. One of the best power ballads ever. Great guitar work
Great interview, Nuno is so passionate. More than words it’s an amazing song, it brings me beautiful memories of my college years, by far my best years. Thank you Professor
This was a great interview. Nuno is an absolute gem. The passion he still shows perfectly depicts the investment in his music. Thanks again for another great episode!!!!! Gonna grab the new music ASAP!!!!
One of the most intelligent and interesting interviews I’ve heard.
Professor, the way give these guys time to talk and even ruminate about their profession.
Outstanding!
THANK YOU! I had no idea they had new music out. The idea of a new Extreme album wouldn't have even crossed my mind. Loving the varied mix of songs on it, but I'm gravitating towards "Rise" at the moment. As for Nuno, he has aged shockingly well. Gotta love that.
Excellent episode Professor! Thank you, and thank you for the great interview Nuno! More Than Words, was my Sr year in high school
Nuno has got to be one of the greatest guitarists ever, no contest! His sheer will for his band is inspiring! Cheers
HE's phenomenal!
And he’s so bubbly full of energy! Cheers to you and yours, RC32. 🍻
This song is on my playlist. Prof is hitting all the songs I listen to.
When your own sister can not dis your song, you know you have a hit.
Ha, right!
Nuno is one of my all time favorite guitarists, but he's such a laid back cat. Love listening to his interviews. Been a fan of these guys ever since I saw the Kid Ego video on Headbangers ball. Love the new album, Nuno's groove is so unique. To me, Extreme, Mr. Big, Winger never got their real due for some reason. I thought it was due to these bands "ballads" cause by the early 90's, I think people were tired of them and they got over played, but another part of me thinks, sadly during that time, people weren't really into SUPER mega technical type talented bands.. I don't know but at least we still have their music to go back and listen to..
Man, thank you for this vídeo! Nuno is such a great guy and More Than Words is definetely an icon!
Great interview Professor!! Not only is Nuno a great guitar player but he is such a down to earth person, just outstanding.
Extreme is one of my favorite bands! Not because More Than Words was their best work but because it introduced me to a phenomenal band and one of the most amazing guitarists in the world. I was a senior in high school, just about to graduate, when I first heard MTW. I'd play music at night to sleep, BUT More Than Words was so good I'd wake up whenever it played. It was and is a huge song. Unfortunately, I think Extreme was sold short by the world. They are incredibly talented musicians who didn't receive the global recognition they should have. Punchline was one of their best but didn't garner a lot of success. Six is definitely a must, old Extreme with new sounds too.
What I love most about Nuno is that he is so rhythmically funky, melodic and harmonically complex, and yet he is just fine playing for the song and strumming while singing harmony vocals. It’s about the song. I also totally enjoyed when he soloed on Janet Jackson’s Black Cat, his was the second solo IIRC and Jesse Johnson of the Time was the first one. The playing lifts the song but doesn’t outshine it. He makes the songs better instead of just shredding every time out
Best interview yet. I never imagined that Nuno would be so interesting to listen to. Thanks for doing this one. As a musician I listen to these for pearls of wisdom from the pros - I love the statement about "Every hit song has to touch someone emotionally".. A ton of talent helps to get you there, but that really resonated.. Great interview!
Funny thing: when I was a young snot of a teenager, I balked at Nuno. It wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I realized how amazing of a musician he is.
I guess I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that; after making incredible music together that a group couldn’t pull it together for more. Now I know, it’s not easy to catch lightning in a bottle.
Thanks for bringing us on the journey.
Nuno is Wicked Pissa and I’m soo glad he and Extreme are getting recognized for their music. I know a lot of the focus of this video is “More Than Words” but definitely listen to the new album. #Rebel and Thicker than Blood are kick butt rock and roll, and Hurricane is beautiful and tender. Loving it.
I have always felt that Extreme was a band ahead of their time. They had the vision to be different when it wasn't a convenient quality. Nuno's insight, humility, and intelligence is so apparent, which makes him legend in my mind. This is definitely in your top 5 videos for me.
Great interview! What an awesome guy. 🤘
More than Words was a great song, so timeless...that and Hole Hearted, Nuno's guitar and Gary's vocals with Nuno's harmonies melted together to make such an angelic sounding song. I know they are way more than those songs, but even just those made them huge in the early 90's..... they are part of the last hurrah before grunge killed music for me. The new solo has guitar players and teachers dropping their jaws in disbelief...... and I have to give Nuno some credit for having a Galaga arcade game in the back ground!!
Hole Hearted.
Thanks! I agree.
@@bishdizzle67 You're correct, my old mind is letting me down! I'll correct it, thanks.
@@TheSlowoldman no worries
Love Hole Hearted to death, still play it all the time.
I love this song. It was one of the first songs I learned with my first vocal coach. I remember singing this at the top of my lungs, cruising on the "Main Drag" in my hometown. Such a great song.
It’s a simple song, but that’s what makes it everlasting.
Another great interview thx
Amazing episode loved every second of it. Extreme is an amazing band and the album Extreme II was a revelation for me back then. What a masterpiece overall!
Extreme has been my favorite band since I first heard Play With Me in Bill & Ted and buying the first album and hearing Mutha. Nuno has been my favorite since then.
I feel like this song is the reason Unplugged was created. After this became a hit then Mr. Big released To Be With You, then the Unplugged show premiere during the height of acoustic singles.
Awesome. What'd you think of the interview?
The single known for closing out the modern glam era.
@@ProfessorofRock loved it, Nuno by far with no questions asked is my favorite musician of all time. Interview was great, I’ve always wondered why they never got a spot on Unplugged. I would love to hear an acoustic version of Watching, Waiting. Their Tribute to Freddy Mercury was the highlight of the entire festival (bias acknowledged). Love of My Life was one of the best covers of the song in existence.
One of the few bands I have seen live multiple times. Whatever the size of the venue, Wembley Arena or Next of Kin, they play an amazing show.
Cannot wait to see them live again!
So, between Rise and Get the Funk Out, best guitar solo in 2 centuries!
Vocals always spot on.
I always feel Pat is overlooked as a bassist, I think his into to Get the Funk Out is iconic.
I prefer small venues so here’s hoping Extreme comes to one near us!
Professor, this is one of your best, great questions and Nuno is exceptional. Great work getting him to open up about this.
Great interview, Adam.
12:01 That basic, seemingly simple concept of improvised soloing within an organized song structure Nuno describes here is the direct legacy of Louis Armstrong. It's so cool to me that Nuno recognized that the reason they could see a little further is only because they stood upon the shoulders of giants.
Great interview. Thanks for helping to keep great music alive.
🏴 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Another example of the immortality of the jazz great.
Wow, what a great interview. He was very thoughtful and insightful and clearly appreciative of the fan response to the song. I wouldn't call what Fallon does a parody, but a cover of the song and video because he loves it - in this case at least. Edit: man, the typos! Somehow I make way more in RUclips comments! 😬😂
Great interview, what a Legend
This was a fantastic interview! I went from a fan of the song to a fan of the person who wrote it.
"It really taught us a lesson that, you know, do what you love to do." Brilliant. "Steven Tyler tells you to play the f** song, you play the f***ing song." Hilarious! Love this song. Fantastic interview, as always, Adam. Thanks for bringing it to us. Have an excellent day!
Wasn't that great?
It really was!
Give this guy his own show!
Nuno and Extreme are truly one of the all time best , Their new album Six it’s a prof of that !
What an interview! Nino looking super fit and healthy. And so articulate. This guy is up there with Clapton, Page, Beck, Hammett, EVH…the Legion of lead guitar players.
Loved this interview
I remember listening to this song and loving it, but never seemed to connect with the band name, Extreme. Then I watched them at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert and I was really impressed. I hear Nuno's name almost daily now because of his amazing guitar skills!
The guitar playing really IS extreme.
I absolutely love this new album!!!!!!!!! Every song is all killer, no filler. Six I believe is their "Hysteria" When i play that CD, the pedal is definitely floored. It's a flawless masterpiece.
That was a great interview
Fantastic interview! Fantastic musician! Fantastic person! I listened to their new album the other day on headphones. Nunos virtuosity absolutely blew me away. The man truly is an artist.
More Than Words is a great song, but I heard enough of it when it came out. I don't need to hear it again. But what is really cool is that they're getting so much love now for their awesome new music. I'm really happy for them. They deserve it; not just because they were good back in the day. Their new music is outstanding.
More Than Words has become, over the years, an anthem. It's no longer just a hit song. But, what, truly, bummed me out about the song's official music video is the fact that they omitted the guitar- tapping section right at the end. I mean, c'mon! That part is the icing on the cake!
One of your best segments of this revelation series you’ve ever done! Such a great interview! Nuno is a great guy to interview and you did a great job as usual.
Love Extreme, and really am digging this new album.
Prof of Rock hits it out of the park again.! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Kept the censor busy muting F bombs haha. I've been a huge Nuno and Extreme fan forever and its fun to see them getting so much attention right now. I love the new album. So many excellent performances and amazing harmonies. Thanks for doing this interview.
I liked this song the first time I heard it. I enjoy acoustic music. In the early 90s, I was buying Tracy Chapman, Tom Petty, Sarah McLachlan, and REM. Still stuck in the 80s listening to Sting's solo records. Nice interview. 😊
Tracy Chapman is my FAVORITE! I will forever love Fast Car. Immortal in my eyes.

Cool song and interview Professor!! Looking forward to tomorrow!🤘🔥
Rock on!
The coolest thing about More Than Words is its longevity. It came out in 1990, yet I still occasionally hear it on lite-rock stations to this day.
I can't really think of any other pop song from that era that does that!
It’s crazy to realize this freshly sounding acoustic tune is almost 35 years old.
Nuno is just phenomenal. Check on his take on HEART's Baracuda with Nancy Wilson and the late Taylor Hawkins on drums. Made me remember how talented he is even before their latest album.
Nuno's so cool, man. So relatable even though he's literally one of the greatest guitar players on the planet. A total inspiration.
Great interview!
I absolutely love this song. I remember hearing it when my son was a newborn. Every time I hear it, it brings me back 32 years to that day. Today is is birthday, lol.
that's pretty cool.
That's so beautiful! All the best to your family!
My favorite thing about More Than Words is how many people thought it was such a sweet love song and used it for weddings and proms and all that without even realizing what the song is actually saying. 😁I had people literally get angry at me when I made them take a closer listen. I'd be a fan of the song even if I didn't like it just for that reason alone.
Right, they say “I love you” is NOT the words they want to hear. The guy and girl love each other but are looking for more than those three simple words to prove their love.
Wow we got a visit from Nuno , what an honor. Top level guitarist and overall gifted musician 🤘
Love me some Nuno! Great interview man! Thanks!
The new album is amazing. One of the best comeback albums ever next to Aerosmith, and thats some pretty damn good company! Also Nuno’s solo in Rise is iconic, as in EVH iconic, it’s really that good.
He’s a legendary guitarist.
MTW was actually ingenious, as it was written in empathetic form, from the view of the partner speaking to the protagonist.
Brilliant twist. When a song buys you your home, all is good :)
Great guys, too.

I remember seeing the video to this song. I was in my late teens when it came out. I was mesmerized by it and just stopped and stood there in the middle of the living room that after it came on TV, and I just cried. The storyline was so beautiful. My cousin Dawn (May she Rest In Peace) asked me why I was standing there crying, and I pointed to the TV trying to tell her it was the video that just played, but I was unable to.
This song and video still affects me ‘til this day, almost 40 years later
Do you know that Nunu has a near identical twin named Nanu Nanu ! Waka Waka
Oh boy!
Did you know Celine Dion has a great gender neutral clothing line called NuNuNu?
The amazing thing for me with Extreme is that they grew just as my tastes in music did. When the first album came out I was all into hair metal. Heard Kid Ego and was hooked. Haven't looked back since. But each album they released had more and more variety. If you liked their albums back in the day, give their new one, "Six" a chance. Every song has its own style. Some took me a few listens to appreciate but I now list this as my second favorite Extreme album, just behind Pornografitti.
Will do!
One of my favourites bands of all time. Great interview.
I love that Nuno has a Galaga arcade game in his home. I used to love that game in the 1980s. I still love and listen to Extreme today.
Wow, just wow! Excellent interview!
My comment about Nuno. I saw the Jimmy & Jack video first. I saw it in June 2023. It was the first time i heard the song. Then i searched for the real band doing that song. When Nuno first raised his head and looked in the camera, i nearly came in my seat. He is the most beautiful man I've ever seen. The song had already reached into my chest and wrapped it's arms around my heart. Add Nuno's face to the mix = me in love. His shredding on Rise blew my socks off. That's my comment on Nuno.
Nuno so cool in this interview about his philosophy of being a professional singer and making music
Great interview, I knew the song but not the band, now I’ll have to go further into their music.
Thanks Nuno! We are a proud bunch, here in the greater Boston area. And you make it that much easier to hold our heads up high. Cuz the sickest guitarist ever is from right up the road. 🤘🏻🤙🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
WOW, Professor what a great interview!!!!!!!!
Great interview. I remember when that song came out, it over saturated the radio and mtv and I was so sick of it that I grew to dislike the song and the band. Fortunately, later on I came to my senses and realized I loved their music, especially Get the Funk Out and discovered the rest of their catalog. Now they are one of my favorite bands. Their new album kicks ass! I’ve been playing it over and over. I love every single song. This is the best album they’ve put out in decades! Extreme is a very talented band instrumentally and vocally. I love the harmonies on this latest record, not to mention Nuno’s insane guitar solos! The first few times I listened to the album, I had to replay the solos because my mind was blown away! 🤯 Love them! ❤️🔥
The song was overplayed indeed but such a great song.
When I was in high school I was such an Extreme head. They hit me when I was in my hair metal phase. One of the best along with Tesla. Then I got exposed to progressive rock in various forms. Still pull out the first 3 Extreme albums to take me back to my guppy years rocking out and learning drums. Love these guys who don't often get the recognition they deserve!
Great interview Nuno. You're one of my musical heroes. Keep on rocking! Keep the music alive!
I was so fortunate to grow up 10 minutes from Nuno... I don't know him, but got to see them live when they were playing around Hudson and I was very lucky to see him when he helped his brother's band (Flesh) sound check for a performance they played at my high school in 89. I played guitar, so I gravitated toward the stage to watch them sound check and he blew me away with the most unbelievable playing I had ever seen with my own eyes... I knew of Extreme at that time, but didn't know it was him... Until a friend walked over when he finished the sound check and yelled... "Nailed it Nuno!!" We couldn't have been more than 10 feet from him and he threw a thumbs up at us... I'll never forget that, it's burned into my brain.
Hey Professor, I'm from the island from where Nuno was born. We live in such a little and far away place. This means a lot for us. Thank you.
Professor... one of my all time favorite bands, Living Colour will be opening for Extreme soon, I cant wait! Good interview, Nuno has some serious chops, good interview Professor.
Great interview professor, hope you do more with Nuno.
Nuno is a great dude from Boston area like myself!!! He rocks on guitar very unique the way he puts his whole body in soul in to his playing!!! A little memory i will share. I didn't know right away where he was from and it turned out to be Hudson Mass. I was a union laborer and our CO. did a water treatment plant or School and i remember buying a Remingtin 222 on my way home from the job site i believe heading to Rt. 20 towards Waltham back in the early 90's!!! Time really does fly's!!! GBY Nuno and the band and yourself great interview!! Dave
Almost didn't watch this video but I'm glad I did. Great interview.
EXTREME SIX has changed my life. I am not even kidding. I wish I could express how important this is to me. I always liked them, thought they were kind of cool, now I freaking LOVE them. Truly a game changer for me in a few different ways.
Another great video, Adam!!!❤❤❤
