- I came across an old video I used to obsess over when I was learning about Nuno Bettencourt. When I was 15/16 I used to download Nuno Solo videos and watch them on repeat to learn everything.
What I didn’t realise is that this particular video is responsible for way more of my approach to play g guitar that I knew!
So I thought I’d share this discovery with you!
Here’s the original video: • Nuno Bettencourt - Rif...

In years to come people will be watching old videos of Rabea and talking about how inspirational they found them💪
I already do 😂😂
Not only by his awesome tasty playing, but also the way he lost weight. Determination is key.
Rebea is already an inspiration wit the squeals lol
truth.
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing...if Rabea realizes that we do the VERY same thing. Go watch his videos and rewinding those 20s of his licks over and over so we get wtf he is effin' doing there :D On another note...aren't we just so lucky to being able to do that and to be able to see both "our model" and him showing us where he got the influence from...his model and teacher and see his excitement. Usually, that's not the case. Often you can see your "master", but not HIS master at the same time and get the connection there between them. What times are we living in, what times
You can always tell when someone has been influenced by Nuno because they're amazing at guitar
🤣 Well said! 💜🙌
Thanks, brother! 🤣 I’m hugely influenced, but I would say I’m far from amazing! Hope you’re doing well, bro! 🤘😜👍
🙃 thanks man!! Gotta love some Nuno! Hope you’re are well and all is going good for you dude!
Kind of off track here , Years ago I turn and turn On SNL and there is Nuno playing guitar in Rihanna's band
@@prs149 is this in RUclips!?
Thanks for checking this out guys!
Also, I know it’s Dee, I learned it along with all the other bits in the video back in the day - I was asking all of you!
Like I said, we always rant and rave about our favourite albums, solos and riffs! But what about the stuff in between? The bits of playing where you hear the ‘off the top of my head’ playing, and the stuff that happens in the moment!
That’s what I was obsessed with in this video.
There are many other vids like this for me, so if I find more of them, I’ll try share them in the same light!
For me it was probably a video of Gene Hoglan playing Crystal Mountain from Death from memory after not playing it for 7 years. Just drums, no context, inspired me to death as a drummer and probably formed my way of approaching drum writing and performing!
Thanks for the share bro!
When I first heard Gojira - Ocean Planet, I didn't know these rythems and tones could be legit. My playing style changed and improved within a few hours of practicing. No joke, no BS.
Love Nuno too bud. He's super underrated. P.S.That riff was Dee by Randy Rhoads, I only need to hear 3 notes to know what it was haha.
You’re the man.
Alongside Nuno, that is.
Rabea, this is exactly why you became my favorite guitarist during the last few years... just your 'in the moment' playing when you're testing out gear or whatever, when you get lost in it and apologize (don't apologize, that's what I'm here for!!). Your ambient noodling livestream last year has become this video for me. I go back to it whenever I'm feeling not in a creative frame of mind and always leave inspired.
Bea holding a fantastic Strat, still rocks the air guitar. We’re all still 13 and rocking out in our bedrooms at some level. Love it!
Was about to say the same thing. That was great! lol
yeah... i think inside all who play guitar... there is a 13y,o kid... playing air guitar listening the best guitar players. And know what... that's why play guitar is so fun.
And that's why... every piece of gear is like a Xmas new toy!
Not sure he was rocking the air guitar, clearly he was playing one that existed in his head!
Beautiful to see / hearing him play Dee. Randy Rhoads was such a dude!
Instantly knew it. Dee. Blizzard of Ozz, I think. I Bought it for $12 when I was 14 and I still haven't mastered it.

I have never related so much to a RUclipsr before. Thank you Bea. This was amazing.
Its sooooooo good!
@@RabeaMassaad
I do this EXACT same thing man. It's even better that you're air shredding WITH a guitar in hand. Love it!
Seeing an accomplished guitar player like Rabea air-guitaring like a complete spanner means that all is good with the world. 😊🤘
Nuno is one of the very best electric guitar players ever to study and steal shit from, period. Even with the big success period of Extreme in the 90es, it's incredible still how underrated the guy is. Everyone should be talking about him.
Rick Graham talked about him too ( and actually many guitarists).
Everyone is talking about him, you live under a rock?... "Underrated" is just a "youtube stupid word"...
@@HeadbangoO Yeah. Your comment is just a stupid RUclips comment. Compare how often people will mention Petrucci, Vai, Gilbert, Yngwie, or even Abasi and some of the newer guys and how often Bettencourt is mentioned in relation to that. I never said that literally noone knows who he is. I said that he's always kind of one of the second row mention guys, even though he belongs to the absolute forefront.
Love NB. But, then again, I’m Portuguese and i just love PT people being successful with their craftsmanship. 🤷🏻♂️😁
Its amazing that Rabea was inspired by Nuno and would look up to him, and now he is doing the same to all of us. Thx Rabea.
Hey guys, just to be clear - I know it’s Dee I was testing y’all hahah I learned it after I watched this when I was a kid.
Love that since ‘Rise’ dropped everyone is seeing how incredibly talented Nuno is.
I’ve been saying it for years haha! Love that people are finally realising it in the wider guitar community.
In a world where I believe the true guitar hero’s are fading, and everyone seems to care about technicalities and this ‘anti boomer’ bullshit. I love that he is ‘rising’ through the crowd, and I couldn’t be more here for it.
9:41 Randy Rhoads - Dee
I’ve never seen this video before, but I’m a big fan of Nuno. I’ll have to check this one out!
I love seeing Rabea's excitement and joy. It's like being a little kid again. Awesome video.
Rabea - this is GOLD. Thanks for sharing. I'm only just rediscovering my love for guitar and videos like this are really inspiring.
Very cool and insightful, thank you Rab!!
Don't be sorry for getting excited! It was amazing to see just how passionate you are and sharing what you love with us! And also to understand how big of an influence Nuno is on your guitar playin :) great video Rabea!
You are obviously a true fan. I love seeing the joy on your face and hearing the joy in your voice.
Watching the smiles crack on your face while you're re-living these memories and enjoying yourself is such a great thing to watch, this has made my day!
Love the excitement you see in your face when talking about your favorite guitarist...awesome
I just wanted to let you know the excitement that you had when you watch this and still clearly get, you give the exact same feeling and inspiration when i watch you play man.
Thanks for all the great videos and inspiration
Really nice of you for putting this out Rabea ! 🤘❤️🔥
Bro, thanks for the music/emotions, love it. This is what it's about.
Enthusiasm - off the scale! It’s infectious!
I really enjoyed that - thanks!
I love seeing how excited you are to talk about something that inspired you so much.
Yeah, Nuno rocks! Rabea, you rock too. I’ve been watching and learning and maybe in time me and other guitarists will look back on your videos with the same fondness and realisation that this is where we learned how play “that” way! Cheers and keep doing what your doing! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing your influences Rabea. It's always interesting to listen to someone who's truly passionate about learning guitar.
He is endlessly inspiring! Every time I listen to him, I need to grab a guitar. So glad, he’s finally getting press 👍🏻👍🏻
Dude that was beautiful. I'm only just starting to learn guitar but I've been obsessed with Nuno's playing for like 25 years. Watching you rock the air guitar at the end there brought on a silent tear, it's so cool to watch somebody as accomplished as you geeking out that hard. I'm sure Nuno would be blown away that you sat and dissected this throwaway jam and found so much gold in it.
Great video Rabea! For me, you are literally my Nuno Bettencourt. In the sense that I've learned so much from just watching you play. Every time you released a new gear demo I'd be excited just to be able to watch you jam and get inspired. I was 15/16 at the time too.
I still have a lot to learn but I wouldn't be the guitarist I am now without that.
Thanks for sharing these nuances, Rabea. They make all the difference when learning.
"Rise" just hit! 🤘 Love your enthusiasm and energy, I feel the same! Don't sell yourself short either, brother, you frickin'kill it!! 💕☀️
This is a great view in where you came from as a guitar player. Love it! Thanks very inspirational.
Dude, all that feeling and influence from one single video. That's something we need to be reminded of when watching modern RUclips, with its endless content. There are maybe 10 videos in the last 5 years that I keep going back to because they are so inspirational. Asylum is one of them. 🙌
Thank you So much for giving me Homework Rabea! I Love it.
He's always been one of my favorites... love his syncopation and swing and ability to articulate notes. Very talented dude.
The player I learned this technique from was SRV. He was doing this back in 1980.
I always love seeing the influences of musicians that I look up to and admire. It feels like one long chain of players across history. Really cool!
It’s this kind of video where it’s just jamming around with nothing else I love the most! I love music but I almost love this kind of thing more where it’s just riffing and noodling or demonstrating technique. This is why I will never ever get tired of your videos Rabea! Doesn’t mean I’m not eagerly awaiting your next music project though!
I’ve learned a LOT watching Rabea over the years. Gear to guitar licks. Always a fan, brother!
This is a wicked video Rabea! Love this type of content, very refreshing.
Thanks for this man. Nuno really was a breath of fresh air in the 90’s. He made music “fun” again. His percussive work was something else and something that was often lost behind the drums, so totally went unnoticed.
I absolutely loved this video Rabea!!!
Thanks for another great video Rabea. So cool so see how passionate you are about guitar.
Totally get it. During lockdown I was listening to music that I haven't listened to for years and realised the little bits I'd picked up from random places. Love the video
Great insight into where you have emerged from Rabea. More like this please!
OMG! You are a rare find. Finally a left-hand dominant playing guitar right-handed. I am exactly the same aspiring guitar player. I am a new fan and now inspired to take my guitar playing to higher levels. Thanks gracefully for sharing this video.
It's amazing how much you can learn from a 16 minutes video if you're watching the right players. Nuno Bettencourt is an amazing player and from what i've watched so are you. Ever since i've played guitar i always found that watching the masters is the best way to learn, whether it's a live performance or a lesson video. Sometimes it can just be them playing freely without any purpose. In my shredder years i used to watch Steve Vai Live in Astoria London religiously, i've had in vhs copied from a friend and later i bought the dvd. I've always had a hard time concentrating on studies so live videos of great players have always been like books to me. Thanks for sharing, this has been very valuable and i'm sure that i'm gonna watch it many times.
Blinding AND HUMBLING ! Wonderful. Cheers Fro.
Amazing! I’ve never heard of him but what a player! I can see why he’s inspired you and made you the amazing player you are. Great video. It’s scary to see the level some people have achieved - truly at one with the fretboard.
HEEELP ! We're waiting for your video lesson about it now ! All the best !
I can so clearly hear those influences in your playing, absolutely love that playstyle
This is my favorite video of yours! Thank you so much for sharing : )
Love your work and attitude man !
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Totally relate.
Great vid Bea. Total fun watching. Thanx for sharing. @John: Cool cutz. Thanx as well. Peace!✌️
Love this video! the idea, the share, the music, the play!
Thanks for sharing. That was Awesome!!!
DUUUUDE!!!! This is EXACTLY where i got my start!!! I remember i had spent a few years being a disciple of Zakk Wylde, then once pentatonics got boring i remember coming across this video ON LIMEWIRE lol and i watched it probably 1000 times, trying desperately to mimick what he was doing. This lead me down a few other rabbit holes which involved SRV and attempting to cop funky bass licks on guitar. SO good!
Your expression listening to Nuno's playing... the air guitar... it represents the whole guitar community. We all do that!!! So don't feel "sorry about getting so excited". Amazing video!
I learned more about air guitar from Rabea on this video more than any other video. I'm really glad I re-found this so many years later. It really influenced me and the way I approach air guitar. It's all in the wrists.
So exited by Nuno playing! Thanks 👍
It’s so good watching someone get so excited like I/ we do at home❤
Oh yeah, you can hear the influence! Awesome video. Absolutely I'll be referencing to you as my influential guitarist in years to come!
I always loved that video, I had it in a dead hard drive some years ago, thanks Rabea and of course Nuno for the memories.
Great Nuno and Great Rabea! 🤘🏽
Very cool video. Nuno is amazing for how freely and fluently he plays and you have that too. I thought the coolest thing was seeing you get into it the way we do when we hear you play.
man what a great video!!! I really appreciate your sharing of stuff that influenced you. Im inspired and I needed it . Thanks Again
I love Nuno’s tone! Thanks for sharing this!
Amazing videos!! Yours and the one from Nuno! Many thanks
I frickin love you bea. Your playing, personality, hard work, tone, and awesome signature guitars
(Definitely saving up for one of those new pro models, sheeeesh). All so inspiring. Keep it up man!!!!
Very insightful vid dude! Great to see you geek out to your guitar heroes! I am amazed that you can play along with that!
Great Rabea , awesome , Nuno is my absolute favourite and that was a new insight for me and something to strive for . You're a great player in you own right. Keep it up buddy
What freedom he shows, such a lesson thanks Rabea 😃
love this video Bea!! 🤘🏼 defiantly gonna be binging lots of nuno videos i used to watch!!
Really interesting video, I hadn't realised how many of the licks you play in videos and demos are pretty much straight from Nuno. I really enjoy watching stuff like this!
Wicked ! Going back in time .roll that power on brother
Rabea - haven't seen you in years. You're looking good - keep ripping it!!!
Thank you for that video. Made me geek out completely
I swear I have watched your 'wicked game' jam about 700 times to for the lead. Possibly one of my all time favorites purely because of the way you approached it, from the really nice melodic stuff at the start, to laying waste to the strings half way through. It's one of the most inspiring leads I've ever listened to and tried to play along with. (well, most of your stuff actually lol :)
Rabea talking about nuno..that vid its precious
killer stuff and great analysis!
Really cool. I never realized how much of Nuno's approach rubbed off on you. The feel and attitude most specifically. Also, really enjoy your playing, it's like a breath of fresh air.
Aloha Rabea, thank you for this video and your honesty and excitement! I’ve taken a break from a fun but stale cover band and have dedicated this year to improving as a player and musician. Right now I’m also really into both Nuno’s and Andy Timmons playing. Different styles but straight from the heart with both of them. I hope that one day a bit of their styles with rub off on my playing enough to be noticed. Thank again! Mahalo! Keep up the great playing and wonderful videos! Rob
This was awesome dude!
I remember watching this video several years ago and having the exact same reaction, been a life long nuno fan. I never feel like Nuno gets enough praise for how incredible he is. Your technique is flawless dude
Thanks for this Rabbea! I remember going to a japanese grocery store in Paris and ask then to order this Young Guitar very issue for me! What is funny is that when I learned guitar I was stunned and inspired by Nuno's playing for all the things that you are highlighting here. And this was 10 years before you did! Really cool to see that it's all still relevant in 2021!
Seen Nuno live twice and both times he blew my mind glad to see him getting the love he deserves. His style has also had a massive impact on my playing, especially the way he manages to mix rhythm and lead playing into his music. When I first heard your playing Bea I could already hear this influence so find to find out you were a fan I was not surprised at all.
Thanks Rabea....awesome as always
Loved it. Very cool man.
It's evident how much Rabea watched and listened to this video haha
I can relate with certain videos over the years too
I had it with riffguy and the super SG video 🙂
It was fun watching you totally nerd out over that solo! I do that kind of thing all the time lol! It was absolutely killing and well deserving of the praise
forgotten how much I loved Nuno, amazing guitarist. Gonna go learn some tracks. Great video!
I’m a left handed person that learned to play guitar right handed as well and I totally relate to your comments in that regard. Love your videos!
Me too......I write left handed and thats it....Everything else I do right handed......and I do mean everything....Lol.
Awesome video! I love Nuno as well!
Amazing! love Nuno's riffs ... this totally explains why I love yours also good sir!
Great vid Bea, honest, informative, and entertaining!
Great stuff. I'd love to be able to play like this. Well worth putting in some time on this type of practice, thanks Rabea.
It's always dope seeing the guitarists you look up to geek out over other guitarist and their abilities
Absolutely understand the enthusiasm. Love his and your playing
This is great! .😊
I think one of the best parts in your video here is that you so clearly shows your excitement because that sort of "I'm- totally-carried-away feeling" is something rare to come by... does that make sense? Anyway...just loved it. 😊👍ill be keeping this as an inspiration.
You brought me back man. Those were the days. How hard it was to find videos of our favorite artist before youtube. Ngl i miss those days
So cool! Thank you! As you said, it's easy to hear the influence in your playing - even though you have your own very unique sound.
