Elvis was a very unique individual. Imagine if he'd have solely went the Gospel route? He likely wouldn't have gotten as famous as he did -but-I believe he had a heart for the Lord.
Yes he was very pleased with the harmonizing four of Richmond VA I meet Mr Tommy I tied his tie Backstage in a Dressing room at a Program in Richmond he was 90 yrs old very nice and humble Brother of Christ Glad I had the chance to be in his presence God Bless them all
The Harmonizing Four ROCKED the house in this video and this took place while the 4 were on their European tour back in 1966. The Four recorded this song a year later for Atlantic Records celebrating the Four's 40th anniversary.
The best bass ever!! If you want to know why they're called "The Harmonizing Four" listen to their rendition of "How Great Thou Art" on RUclips. What a blessing!
That's a good question. I wonder if it is also a matter of the general atmosphere of the times. Perhaps people had more patience in that era, or maybe more faith. Our internet saturated information age has weakened us.
@@A_Pa-Plainjane The Internet saturated age has in many ways weakened us. I grew up in the generation that was on the cusp of it.I remember: record players, 8 tracks, AM & shortwave radio, rotary telephones, payphones, cursive writing, going to the library to research things for school, passing "notes" in class, and actually having to put in the time and hone up the skills to procure going out on a date face to face. Grew up old school. We didn't have A/C in my house until I was 16. Same with "cable" t.v. Rabbit ears all the way! Why do I say that? Because in my own life the simplicity of a meager early life strengthened me.in Junior High there there was dial up. Didn't effect me much though. Never had a computer in the home nor did the kids in my lower middle class neighborhood. It is truly the devils playground now in regards to this "information age". For many younger folks it is folly at there finger tips. Or a way to waste alot of time by becoming very narcissistic and projecting a false personna or your whole day on social media. I use it for research and to watch enlightening youtube videos like this. Just a tool. Performers of God like these Men I think came up in an atmosphere where they operated in social norms which helped to Foster their God given talents. Was everything in those days right? Heavens no, I don't think I need to cover the unwarranted injustices that these men went through, as I am sure you are old enough to know. But I think In those times through life's trials folk were more inclined to turn to there community and church for help. Also, families were largely intact then, which nurtured strong and vibrant men & women. I see from other comments this clip is from 66. In 64 is when the Supreme Court removed prayer from public schools and started instituting the Massive Welfare State and War on the Nuclear Family that we see today. All good points you raised. May I recommend another video? Check out Rev. Julius Cheeks "Morning Train". His wife is playing the piano (B&W) and it is 🔥. Sorry for being lengthy but you really made me think. Have a Blessed Day ✝️
@A_Pa-Plainjane I often wonder if something happened and if the internet/ social media went down for 180 days, what the results would be? I will admit I enjoy it (-) social media. Young man during early stages of internet. No computer in the house growing up. I Know how to live without it.
I wish they had a video with Jimmy Jones leading on Bass... Eli's was a bad man as far as basses are concerned but Jimmy would drop the bottom out of a room...
Lol the point was that that’s who he reminded me of. It’s funny how people interject thoughts on top of something that wasn’t even said. Come on now let’s do better.
@@percyjohnson849 I personally known Carl Davis and I have his phone number, we talk. Even Carl will tell you Ellis was on another level. In what way does Ellis remind you of Carl? The pure range of the voice?
Kendall, I love this group along with the Hummingbirds, Golden Gates, and other groups who don't "scream". Who started that anyway? Do you know what I'm talking about?
I wonder what individual or organization owns the rights to this documentary film? Maybe a German television station? This would make for a wonderful special feature on public television.
Which guitarist is that by chance... I've heard on recordings a guy named Jessie and in their final years I knew of a guy named Sterling that played for them
Nothing Like Old School Gospel.
Thank you, Mr. Kent. This group is sensational, and I agree with you. The bass is TRULY what a bass should be. Listening again to this fine song.
Amen to dat
Man that lead is crispy 💪🏿
In very loving memory of Mr. Lonnie Liston Smith Sr. (1907 - 1995 R.I.P. Gone but NOT forgotten).
My grandfather was born in 1897, he loved the Four, I love them too.
❤️
Paris est magique!
This is the real thing right here this is the real thing
Those are my great uncle and my great , great uncle singing!! His son is still alive and doing great!
The Harmonizing Four!!! MY MOST FAVORITE!!!
The first guy with the glasses on killed it.
See if church music was like this - I would go - this swings and filled with joy/passion/depth. Thank You XOXOX
The 1966 festival must have been the greatest collection of singers of all time. Every performance is incredible. I can't pick out my favorite.
This is in Germany, the 1966 festival I believe you’re referring to was in Newport.
@@KendallKent ok, Ok I'm not sure. I'm not sure who was on the roster at the events. Gonna have to look at the roster.
I love the way he smiles like he’s really enjoying himself! Praising God.
He has a beautiful smile and he is enjoying this. I am also.sang men.
I remember my music teacher in 1st grade made us sing this, this song had been playing in my head on replay ever since. I’m now 17
This is what I grew up listening to in the late fifties. Wow
Loved this!

That basso is Ellis Johnson, I have everything bass singers Jimmy Jones and Ellis Johnson recorded with them.
Wow! Never thought I'd hear Lonnie Smith on lead!!
I have several leads with Lonnie.
Lonnie Smith father of legendary jazz musician Lonnie Liston Smith
@@KendallKent he is the only one that can't really lead!

Awesome!!! ❤
Bass man in this gospel group has a resemblance to melvin Franklin of the Temptation 🥰🥰💥
Melvin was taught by William Bobo of the Dixie Hummingbirds
he does resemble. or melvin resemble him

Nobody today could can come close to Ellis Johnson (the bass singer)… he’s too unique

Ellis was actually lower and louder than Jimmy Jones. Jimmy was heavier, and smoother in the bass range.
Catchy
Ellis was a magnificent bass singer
For a bass singer he had a very smooth voice. He reminds me of Carl Davis that replaced James Walker of the Hummingbirds
Carl Davis wasn’t a bass singer.

I mean, the Hummingbirds shouted a little bit
The shouting blues must have figured in some of this, or maybe the shouting crept in because the times got noisier.
I wonder what individual or organization owns the rights to this documentary film? Maybe a German television station? This would make for a wonderful special feature on public television.
Yes it would. Most folk do not know about this fine group. And also do not know about old school gospel. It would be a blessing for the world.
I think they all can sing and have strong voices..all except that last one! LOL
The last tenor?

There are no female singers in this group.
awesome ! who is the guy with the glasses singing the first solo ?
Ellis Johnson’s (bass singer) father, Thomas Johnson
Which one is Ellis Johnson's father? Also, some amazing E4s from Ellis!
Ellis’ father is the one with the glasses and who could actually sing
@@KendallKent 0:58 One?
Ailton Souza de Araújo Júnior yes

Wow I never knew that
Kendall, I stand corrected, that was Ellis, and not Thomas.
Ellis Johnson was the bass singer from 1958-1993 and the son of lead singer Thomas Johnson
Ellis took over after Jimmy Jones left the group
@@keys31157 yes indeed. Jones was fired in 1958 and Ellis came and filled the gap in the summer of 58.
