Now I get why this film gets to me. They found people who don't act to be in this. They don't seem fake in the movie, though. It just seems like what people would say. It's not a bunch of dramatic monologues or thinks like that. It just felt real. This reviewer explains this well. There is this sense of reality and organic storytelling. Terrance Malick spend millions and millions to do this too.
Nice review. I think this film stands out from other films about serial killers. Too many of those kind of films focus on the killer(s) and /or the law enforcement and you lose sense of the actual victims. Worst still, some of them even glamorise the violence or make excuses for the killer (e.g. Monster). This film was good in the way it portrayed the situation Jamie was in and how it affected him, whilst the others reveled in what they were doing. Yet, you never really get the feeling it was empathizing too much with Jamie, nor with the family members who may/may not been involved but said nothing. The film did give a powerful sense of the victim’s fear and a part of what they went through, and the recreation of those tapes over the visuals was incredibly haunting. By the time you get to the end of the movie there doesn’t need to be anymore violence onscreen because the lead up tells you all you need to know. “Critics” like that Richard Wilkins can go f* himself. He is probably fine with people watching gory horror or flashy action films, but a film like this has far more significance - it really dived deep into the nature of human depravity and real life horror, and more importantly it made us remember the victims. Tough to watch, sure, but it should not be just forgotten about.

Watched it last night and to be honest, I found it a bit boring. I know the real crimes were appalling but the film left me feeling jaded. Great acting, especially from the lead actor, but I felt the 2 hour running time didn’t help; lot of padding with overlong scenes of the killers sitting down to eat. Still worthy of watching though.
No one of these three killers came from Snowtown, people were mostly murdered in Salisbury North, the movie made a bad reputation for the people living there, for their town at all.

Hello I only saw it on crime files very violent and Brutal serial killers .got to see the movie yes it seem that they the killers are thrilled excited and lustful with extreme hate and torture it seem like they hate to let the victim die without feeling the Pain that they inflect on them. The Person will suffer to the end still that's not enough the killers chop them up, I had to keep going back to keep up with the names.Really intense, make you want to see and don't want to see the things they do and I haven't seen the movie.must see. Mrs P your senior citizen watcher.
While I don't believe it is intended (you preface these comments with "...the way the characters justify their actions..."), your comments regarding Bunting's motivations and his justifications in choosing his victims ("...cleaning up the societal scum that the legal system have leaned on too lightly", "...protecting society in their own warped way") might be misconstrued to suggest that there was an almost, albeit "warped", justification in Bunting's "vigilante" crimes, somewhat akin to the "heroic" character typified by the titular character of Dexter. As I say, I do not believe this to be your intent, however, I fear there may be some ambiguity in how this was presented. One of the many strengths of this film was its portrayal of extremist, sociopathic, homophobic culture and societal misconceptions relating to homosexuality and paedophilia, which I feel this ambiguity undermines somewhat. Anyway, a relatively minor criticism of a really well thought out and, in my humble opinion, very accurate review of a unique Australian film.

Yes, these were appalling murders, the families of the victims went through hell, but the film was made with complete honesty. This is a stunning movie - incredible acting, direction, and an essential study into many dark elements of the human psyche.

Lists their names and specifically depicts them. It's very different. Having this film out in the public makes it impossible for the victims family members to ever move on. As for the idea that the producers are profiting off of the deaths of others, you could say that about almost any movie based off of true events where people die- Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, The Zodiac Killer, Snowtown, any movie about Ted Bundy or The Manson Family and so on...what separates a film that exploits a tragedy from one that explores it is the way the story is told. This movie is not gratuitous in the way it explores the subject matter and gives insight into the dynamics of toxic relationships and how these things can happen, which is what lifts it above those "I spit on your grave" type torture-porn movies.... TL;DR- it's a nuanced topic and heaps of movies are based on real tragedies involving the deaths of real people

Easily one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. I'm actually struggling to think of a movie that disturbed me more.
A Serbian Film frankly disturbed me more and this movie had a very triggering scene for me.

This was the most realistic portrayal of a serial killer ever put to film.great performances all round.a quite compelling watch.

One of my absolute fave films, it doesn't get as much widespread credit as it deserves. It's a work of art.

besides AC/DC and ROAD WARRIOR i have basically liked very little pop culture that has ever come out of australia but this flick looks good.
