Hi Fred. I dusted of my Maxcom 4e for the aniversary day, brilliantly repaired and tuned by Richard Shirby, and as I was visiting relatives i went to the top of Mowcop in Staffordshire and had a great contact mobile with a chap in Bridgend all on 4 Watts. Unfortunatĺy many of the people on air that day seemed oblivious to the event and wouldn't let me in or couldn't hear me for a radio check. Thanks for the videos.
That old Grant 2 sounds good and don't worry about using a Linear amplifier I have the RM Italy KL-203 with a president Lincoln 2 and a McKinley sideband radio and it's fine on my Sirio GPE 27
My first year back in liverpool area and the CB is alive and well. I only have a 30 quid silver rod attached to the old garden umbrella pole pocking through a patio table. It's walled in by 8 foot walls and large buildings at ground level and I have already heard 30 - 40 people in my first few weeks back. I am not getting out well but have had contacts on FM and my very first on SSB. I can also hear a tonne of skip. My advice is set up the radio and just have a listen. In liverpool there are people on most of the day. Just heard chatter on 15 at 7am Saturday morning.
@@CB-RADIO-UK Also Jodrell banks web sdr picks up CB and can be a way to have a listen. Before I got my new rig I used this to see if anyone was out there. There was. Thanks to this web sdr I now have the Ham bug growing too.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I am 30 miles from there and can tune in and fill in missing conversations I fail to hear on my rig. It's handy and extends my range. PMR is taking off local here in the liverpool area in a big way. I hear a lot of the guys talking about putting large antennas up for it and I presume they are pushing the wattage above half a watt. I would love to see higher power licence free PMR. I use PMR to speak to family who are close. We wanted something just in case of a power cut so we could chat to elderly vulnerable relatives. It works ok but the extra wattage would be handy. That's how I came back to CB through prepping. I was seen as a little mad in 2018 when we bought backup power and tonnes of food but we were well vindicated by current events. Hope you are feeling better? Honey is great for your throat. Gargling with mouthwashes can help too. Ta for the reply.
I live in the Bournemouth area and have a Midland Alan 42DS and an ss6900n base station. Ive got the latter attached to an 18foot mast, attached to a garden fence post. Ive managed to pick up local CB traffic on the Midland but nothing on the big antenna, except for USB. The USB contact was from Barcelona and whilst sat in a car park in Poole, managed to pick up the Netherlands. Ive looked on FB and found a south coast net, but alas.......nothing. I'm going to tune into the celebrations Wednesday night.....hoping for some more success. (I'm a tenant so putting things on the roof is a pipe dream).
It's always worthwhile making sure that the centre pin receptacle on any S0239 socket hasn't been inadvertently widened by inserting badly finished PL259 plugs..
Hey Fred since the President GRANT II is discontinued and the warranty is off. It's time to make your GRANT II an export radio. Just snip the white wire and move over a jumper if that is the way to do the conversion. The first day I got my President MCKinley EU CB radio i just voided the warranty and snipped the white wire and moved over the jumper and have been using that way. It is putting out 20 watts on FM AM and SSB!😆 okay Fred best 73's. Looking forward for your videos!!!
Hi Fred, many thanks for all the useful info which is invaluable to a returning CBer after a 40 year gap!. I,ve been back on air for 18mths and loving it. I have heard you on 305 a few times if conditions are right and qrm is low and I live in Coventry! so that's not bad but 305 does get very busy so qso is difficult, take care 73's from Paul in Cov...26-CT-4676.
Fred, if they started a little earlier you would get a few stateside contacts. Currently I talk with the UK virtually everyday from the midwest USA from 2pm to 6pm UK time. I bought one of those Rotel RVC 240s in 1981. I think it still might be located in my Mums house back in the UK!
Just as a follow up I'm hearing the UK right now but when I go to channel 14 in the UK FM band , 27.731 , I almost never hear anyone. Is it just not active any more?
UPDATE; I did contact a few people in the UK on 19 and 14 UK FM. some were great. some didn't believe me that I was in the middle of the US because I still have a British accent! 😂 Talked to a number of UK stations the past few days, always between 3pm-6pm UK time (9am-12am here in the midwest USA) I will try tomorrow.
High ground here I come. Missed the last one but not this one. Thanks for the reminder Fred. 26CT9484 calling on my 9900 and a Sirio 5000 on the roof. Thanks again Fred.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I live less than 200 yards from the coast. Not one local breaker was on, but I could hear distant breakers on 27 - one in Rochester and another in Maidstone. Good video Fred , I might be tempted to sort out my twig and Chuck it on the car and get the planet 2000 out and go static mobile , I did a vid a few yrs ago on RUclips cheers shane
Great 2 good radio get alot 4 your money I have MK1 Adams and McKinley The only let down the noise filters in them are not great I live in an area with lot of qrm I get off solar panels so sold grant 2
Is that a 6feeet tube heater you have? I bought a couple of 1feet tubes that take the cold air of room.just curious to find out if worth getting larger heater.
@@CB-RADIO-UK thank you for reply. It will be 120 watts. Can make the difference between burst pipes and no burst pipes at little cost Take care from Rab Must Muirkirk 20.
If you have adjusted the whip part of your antenna to its best setting and your still getting a high SWR start checking the 259 plug for shorts or the coax for sharp bends or pinches etc.

Well done for trying. Some times you do need a bit extra but the 6900 will do 40w on FM so there may not be much different.
