    Beyoncé wasn't off key. The key was off Beyoncé!

  • @razrv3lc
    @razrv3lc 7 лет назад +299

    Just to expand on intentional off-key notes--they're called accidentals. It's essentially a note that is deliberately sharp or flat, even though it's out of the key of the song that is being played. They're actually written into the music that way a lot of times, so they're aren't really accidentally done like the name implies.

    • @jordancannon1012
      @jordancannon1012 7 лет назад +36

      Exactly! Beyonce is intentionally singing double harmonic minor scales which includes accidentals. She wasn't off key because she missed the note.

    • @Jojo_Ojo_14
      @Jojo_Ojo_14 7 лет назад +5

      razrv3lc Intentionally off key? No. It's true that accidentals are not in the key of the performed song, but that is not what singing off key is. singing off key is when you sing an incorrect note and your ears don't lead you back to the correct notes and you are now in a new key. That has absolutely nothing to do with accidentals.

    • @razrv3lc
      @razrv3lc 7 лет назад +3

      Melani Marston "its true that accidentals are not in the key of the song" so that means they're intentionally off key lmao
      You literally just repeated exactly what I said but with different wording.

    • @Jojo_Ojo_14
      @Jojo_Ojo_14 7 лет назад +4

      razrv3lc The word off-key implies incorrectness. A person who understands how music works would get it, but what I'm saying is, you should refrain from using "off-key" so you don't confuse anyone else.

    • @razrv3lc
      @razrv3lc 7 лет назад +5

      Melani Marston lmao don't pull the "person who understands music would get it" card because I was in a symphonic band for close to ten years. I know exactly what I'm saying. If a note is off-key, intentional or not, then describing it as off-key is accurate. It doesn't matter if you THINK it implies something. It only implies a note is off-key. If YOU think it implies something bad, that's your issue. Nobody has had an issue with my correct description of accidentals but you, so clearly it wasn't confusing.

      Jordan Cannon I am honestly surprised music can be so complex for some people that claims theirselves as musically educated that they don't seem to recognize her attempts at giving songs certain sexy-jazzy-sensual-nuances and, instead, they judge her wrong as being off key. This is some real vocal misinformation being sold as technical knowledge here in this video. Anyway, I am not even supposed to judge her as a vocalist, because, you know... she's Beyoncé.

      That's not even an opinion. She ACTUALLY said it herself in one of her interviews, and one of the footage of her 'I am...' concert where she sang 'Sweet love' by Anita Baker and her voice was not in condition so she DODGE the highest part of the song rather than took risk justifies her being 'perfectionist'. She didn't sing that part because she was afraid to crack (with a voice that was already hoarse at the time). No, I am not talking about the 'Sweet dreams' medley in Vegas. I am talking about the other version taken from the camera phone of the audience in her actual 'I am' world tour back then.

  • @guilhermeguilherme6455
    @guilhermeguilherme6455 7 лет назад +79

    Beyoncé wasn't off key. She was intentionally attacking the flat note below the one she wanna hits (objective note), like in a provocative/sensual way and she has always been doing that, specially in those blues/soul-based songs, bending the note until reaching the semi-tone above the flat note. It is not being off key and I am surprised you see yourself as musically educated and doesn't seem to know it as just another vocal technique. That's totally different from not being able to reach the note because it's "too high" and hitting the flat note below that; and that's a vocal flaw, which clearly ain't the case here.
    I'm really surprised lol

    • @guilhermeguilherme6455
      @guilhermeguilherme6455 7 лет назад +16

      Those definitions containing the keys for each scale are so primary... if you're talking about Major Diatonic scale of certain key then, voila, you're right. But so many songs (especially the ones you took her for granted like "Me, Myself and I") are played using non-convencional pop-chords progressions; they have a jazzy feel to them, which LIMITS the use of a single major scale for the whole song; in fact, this song transits between keys and harmonic progressions that it's a crime to state that certain keys are allowed and other aren't; it's even harder to adress a single key to "Me, my and I".
      Jeez, get your shit together.

    Me, Myself and I's on the key of D-flat major (D♭- E♭- F - G♭- A♭-B♭- C - D♭). Don't know where you got G# from, also your notation is extremely off in that specific case. You cannot have C and C#, in the same scale. Same goes for G/G#. You stated the song's key as C# in the clip around 1:49, which is technically right, since you're just going by the enharmonic scale, but still, you cannot have F/F#. The notation has to be correct.
    Break Free is in the key of G minor (G-A-B♭-C-D-E♭-F-G). You got Crazy In Love and Work From Home right.

    'Me, Myself, & I' is in D-flat major, 'Crazy in Love' is in D minor, and while every singer has pitchy moments (when they are unintentionally sharp or flat vs. the correct pitch and key of the song), the last example you cited was an intentional use of an 'accidental' note progression, as Bey changed the song's ending key for a different musical effect.

  • @BearKitty09

    I posted this a reply to another reply, but I would like to elaborate(?) on some specific music theory terminology.
    The diatonic major scale (which is referred to as “on key” in the video) follows the same pattern of intervals regardless of what note you start on. And interval is the space between two notes, the smallest of which is a half step. For reference, the “Jaws” theme opens with an ascending half step. A whole step is two half steps. A scale pattern for a major key is: Root* Whole Whole Half Whole Whole Whole Half. *The Root is the starting note and how the keys are so named. If you look at a piano, the black piano keys help guide where Whole steps are. If there is a black key between two white keys, the distance between the two white keys, it’s a whole step. If not, it’s a half step.
    Most musicians I know also refer to “off key” as “out of tune” primarily because is has more to due with tuning within the chord (three or more notes played simultaneously), than with the key of the song.
    Also for those asking, someone singing “flat” means the note is slightly lower than the assumed intended pitch. Sharp is slightly higher.
    Music theory can seem cumbersome. I recommend starting with the musical alphabet. Look at it on a piano and on a staff and then move on to intervals, chords, and finally major and minor keys.

      It's all about your range, you can change the songs key to fit your voice, it's a beginners mistake to try and sing a song in a key that not for you. You can transpose the key, the notes have the same intervals between them it might just be a 5th lower or whatever you find comfortable

      It's not really the best education. Well, like for the case of Beyonce, she's singing on a double harmonic minor scale which has intentional sharp and flat notes in order to give the music a certain feel. So she wasn't missing notes, they were on a certain scale that calls for intentional off key notes.

    Yes experienced singers do know when they are off key, you can often tell you are not going to hit it a split second before. And it's typically due to not opening the mouth enough, and having improper breath support (either too much or too little air). Plus dancing and walking around do not help the situation, sometimes we expect a little too much from singers as going off key is a natural human phenomenon when you consider the specific environment.

    g# scale:
    g#, a#, b#, c#, d#, e#, and f##. Why talk about keys if you don't understand them?
    edit: Also, when in c#, there is no f and c. They must be notated as E# and B#. All letters a through g must be present in a scale/key.

      How do you know what notes are on key? I get the song has a key but how do you know what notes are on key with that song?

    • @BearKitty09
      @BearKitty09 5 лет назад

      doesitmatter The diatonic major scale (which is referred to as “on key” in the video) follows the same pattern of intervals regardless of what note you start on. And interval is the space between two notes, the smallest of which is a half step. For reference, the “Jaws” theme opens with an ascending half step. A whole step is two half steps. A scale pattern for a major key is: Root* Whole Whole Half Whole Whole Whole Half. *The Root is the starting note and how the keys are so names.

    I didn't get a single thing about what being off key is. Perhaps if there are some good examples about being on key and then off key and then we are provided with the different sounds, then we might get what being off key is. Also providing examples of on stage performance doesn't help either because of all the echoing, which makes it difficult for us to know where and how the singers are off key.

    I have a question, if you are changing the key due to the limited capabilities of your range and your vocal type, like for example, you're a baritone and the original key of a song is a Bb4 and you can only reach the note in A4 or G#, does that means you are off key or still on key?

  • @angiefrost4805
    @angiefrost4805 7 лет назад +3

    flat and off-key is the same?

    • @DeeBroughton
      @DeeBroughton 7 лет назад +20

      Not necessarily. Flat means you are singing below (lower than) the intended note. Off-key means you are singing a note that is not included in the key of the song. It's possible to sing flat but still be in key.

    • @SaraJazz

      There's also "sharp" - when you are singing above (higher than) the intended note.

    Whether a note is sung flat or sharp (like a note being 15 cents flat/sharp) is called being in tune, not "on key." Not every note in a song has to belong in the written key. Music would be so boring if we never ventured outside the 7 note scale. Singers can change pitches all they want. They just need to be in the center of whichever note they're singing, unless it's out of tune as a stylistic effect.

    • @NicoleKe
      @NicoleKe 7 лет назад +2

      Abigail What? "Singers can change pitches all they want." Really? Sit at your piano or download a piano app, begin to randomly hit keys. Report back on how that sounds.

  • @CarltonLaRoyLee

    Can you change the title? it implies they sing in a key that is not in the chord progression...which is not true. they are ON KEY...well not that 5th harmony girl(SHE was flat). But they aren't singing the recorded key. BIG DIFFERENCE

  • @veronicagoodan5402
    @veronicagoodan5402 6 лет назад

    So basically singers are trying to recreate GOOD, on key singing while singing live, miss the notes, and make up for it by sliding around, trying to substitute other notes that may sound okay within the given key...got it. They are STILL out of tune, but are trying to fix it in a musical way before anyone notices how awful they sound!

  • @squigglyMC
    @squigglyMC 7 лет назад

    People don't start bashing singers, about like 85% or more use playback which is the studio recording playing in the background but the singer still sings, this helps a lot if you do intense choreography and sound very breathy at times. Don't be confused with lip syncing. Which is what Britney used to do and what Mariah Carey recently did

  • @Cdspe0j

    0:18 Are you sure C# is on key? I checked the notes with piano keys to understand the system and I noticed that there's always one key between those notes. But C# follows C without any note (key) between them and I don't really understand why it's the only *on-key* note that follows another directly. It's the same with the second one (Key F). Can anyone tell me why? ['cause that seems a bit random to me.XD]
