- SCRATCH DJ SESSION ★ DJ Shortee ★ Freestyle Scratch Showcase on Technics 1200 Turntables & Rane 72 // Here's a little freestyle scratch DJ session that I improvised in my studio on my fave Technics 1200 MKII turntables and Rane 72 DJ mixer. 😻
This scratch DJ session was originally filmed live online during a private lesson as an 8-bar Q&A improvised freestyle scratch practice drill with one of my students.
However, it was so much fun that I edited the video to eliminate the 8-bar rests and cut together a few of my fave 8-bar freestyle segments of this scratch DJ session to share with you for a fresh dose of inspo!
🤩 PRO TIP: Your unique freestyle flow is a SKILL must be practiced. Try practicing your improv skills intentionally in 4-bar (or) 8-bar phrases to give yourself a container.
Focus on creating a beginning, middle & and end within each phrase. This will train you to structure your freestyle flow organically in a way that makes musical sense so that you naturally sound more polished & deliberate when you improvise on the fly!

🤓 FUN FACT: The Technics 1200s in this video (& most of my videos) are actually my first turntables that I learned on way back in 1995, and that I still use to DJ & teach with to this day! Just goes to show that Technics turntables are built solid as a rock → as long are you keep them tuned up they'll last you FOR 👏 EV 👏 ER!

I’ve been following you for years much love and respect. I have to ask, what is the thing you’re doing with your wrist when you’re doing quick scratches? it’s like you drop or bring in your wrist to continue the scratch while you’re hand is on the fader? i’ve been trying to improve my scratching because i feel i’ve gotten stagnant and this would definitely help a lot if you could explain this!

What level are the scratches you made in this clip
What do you mean by "what level"? Do you mean what skill level? If so, each scratch technique's difficulty varies individually and this session includes a whole range of techniques including, but not limited to, Baby, Release, Drag, Tip Skribble, Tears, Chirp, Transforms, Flares, Boomerangs, Autobahns, Crabs, Drills, Bubble Taps, Faderess Flares etc...and a lot more (too many to list here). So it just depends on what scratches you're referring to, but the overall freestyle session is def an advanced level performance. Hope that helps! 😄
