Miquel Vilaró - Showcase exhibition 'Collecting in the colony. The Baux/Núñez de Prado collection'

Interviews conducted for the showcase exhibition "Collecting in the colony. The Baux/Núñez de Prado collection”. Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món, Montcada venue (June 2024).
The exhibition includes more than 50 pieces, which will be shown as a whole, some of them for the first time, with a reading and critical view of the colonial fact and the context in which they were manufactured, used and extracted.
Miguel Núñez de Prado y Susbielas (1882-1936) was governor of the Spanish territories in the Gulf of Guinea from late 1925 until the first few months of the Second Republic, in 1931, and acquired a number of objects during his mandate. In October 1936, after he was executed by Franco’s side, his widow, Maria Luisa Baux, sold them to the Generalitat de Catalunya and they were given to the ethnological section of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya. Later, the collection was transferred to the Museo Etnológico y Colonial, created in late 1948 and the forerunner of today’s Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món.
With this exhibition, the museum wants to disseminate the research work that is being carried out on part of the ancient collections and with which it wants to start a process of necessary critical reflection on the colonial origin and the forms of acquisition of part of its collections.
