wow My mom used to have the 72 Ford Country Squire, same front end etc... loved it!!!! no my mom. is over 71 yrs old but up till now she sits that those were good cars!!
They probably were wearing just the lap belts. For some odd reason classic car owners think a lap belt is protection enough but in reality it only provides protection for the lower body. And yes those old style non-retracting shoulder belts are a bit restrictive compared to modern shoulder belts, but in a collision they are quite effective.
