    This is a preview of our brand new 2xDVD sheepdog training program First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training - a training DVD for beginners which shows you how you can start to train a dog for farm, trials or ranch working with the absolute minimum help from other people.
    If you are interested in training a dog to work sheep, a smallholder, potential sheepdog trialler, hobby sheep keeper, smallholder, farmer or even a budding sheep rancher this 2xDVD set, clearly explains the natural instinct of the Border Collie Sheepdog and how (with patience, determination and simple preparation) it can easily be programmed to develop into a really useful working dog.
    The time honoured (and probably easiest) method of starting a young dog is to use an experienced dog to keep the sheep in the middle of the field. But this method's of no use to beginners who don't have an experienced dog (or access to one), so in First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training the dogs are all trained WITHOUT THE USE OF AN EXPERIENCED DOG.

      thats because you fool he cant see anything on a tv screen he can only see in black and white for a start as he doesnt have as many rods and cones as our eyes do. This isnt a fault woth the dog but some dogs have a higher sense of smell than we do. Suggest you train hin to smell out drugs or explosives aa this may be useful in some other way to you.
      i always thought sheep dog trials would find someone guilty mostly the owners.

    My dad usually starts training at sixteen months, but it really depends on whether or not the dog is mentally ready for training. When you take her out with sheep, does she break down and want to work or does she not even look their way? Some never even take interest in the stock. Others, working is all they want to do. The dog will let you know when and if she's ready to start working.

    I do not own a sheepdog, but generally in dog training it is easiest to rely on the group instincts of the dog: You use a way of talking and moving that starts from the dog's mood and then slowly transforms to what you want from the dog right then so that the dog can just copy from you who are his/her pal, pack member. Please try it out, the results are amazingly good!

      They certainly do! A good dog requires only a few hints, and then it will perform the task without commands. The can sometimes go wrong though, if the dog misinterprets what the handler wants it to do!

    So does border collie listens to every word or is it like 3:50-4:00? Sometimes they don't always listens to their command or was it, that one wasn't as trained as your best dog? I have a border collie myself but she's still a puppy. I'm sure they're supposed to be the most intelligent dog, but do they listen to every command you teach them? Or sometimes they get distracted?

    I noticed the drive this dog had, and it’s wanting to not be caught, why don’t you use a check cord? We have older and very well trained Field English Setters now, but our when our female was young, and you took her off a leash, she was gone! They make a long, lite weight cord, that will sail through deep grass, but it gives you a better chance at catching them, or keeping them from bumping a bird, or in your case holding your dog back from the sheep, or however you do when training, i do not live in the country, or have sheep, I just like watching the dogs. :)

    Does this translate to cattle and other breeds of herding dogs?

    • @andynick01
      @andynick01  Год назад +2

      Working cattle with dogs is similar to working sheep with dogs, except for the safety angle. A dog, might bring sheep running towards you, and the danger level is comparatively small. A group of cattle running towards you is potentially far more dangerous, so we recommend you train the dog to push cattle away from you first, and once the dog is working well and the cattle respect it, allow the dog to bring them towards you (steadily). Another difference is that often the dog needs to be more assertive to move cattle than it would with sheep. We only train with Border Collie and Kelpie sheepdogs, so I don't feel able to advise you with other breeds, but the basics are the same, of course.
