13 Very British Problems

  • Not quite catching someone's name, meaning you can never speak to them again.
    The agonising problems...
-Not quite catching someone's name, meaning you can never speak to them again.
-Receiving an email ending in regards and wondering what you've done to cause so much anger.
-The terror of these words: and then later i'll ask everyone to stand up and present their ideas to the room.
-The impossibility of eating a jaffa cake without someone bringing up THAT debate.
-Panicking in a sandwich shop and allowing a distressingly odd combination of fillings to happen.
-Not wanting to use an emoticon yet worrying you'll come across sarcastic without one.
-Never wanting to use an exclamation mark yet worrying you'll come across as miserable without one.
-Losing faith in your delivery halfway through telling a joke, so opting to just explain what the punchline was going to be and why.
-Seeing someone you know walking just ahead of you, so stopping dead in the street until they're completely out of sight.
-Resigning yourself to an usual and arduous train route, rather than risk sharing your commute with a colleague.
-Asking to sample an ale, disliking it and ordering a whole pint so as not to further waste the barman's time.
-Feeling your life lacks excitement, so dunking your biscuit for an irresponsibly long time.
-Saying "honestly, it's fine" to warn of imminent meltdown.

I was at a friends house the other day and we went out to buy some ginger biscuits for our tea. Then when we got back we realised the biscuits were too big for her cups. We literally went down to Oxfam on the opposite street to buy some mugs that were right size.

Exactly! I'm Scottish and sound completely different. And even in London not everyone sounds like that. I've lived in Britain my whole life, and the only person I've met with that accent is this awful snobby girl who used to go to my school and who I secretly hated.

Every single time I go on holiday the conversations go like this:
      Person: where are you from?
      Me: England.
Person: so you're obviously from London!
      Me: no, I'm from Dudley.
Person: I thought you were English?
      Me: yes, I am English.
Person: but you just said you were from Dublin.
      Me: no, i said Dudley.
      Person: Dublin?
      Me: Dudley.
      Person: dublin?
Me: you know what?! Forget it!
Person: is that how you treat people in England? Do you scream at people all day?
Me: no... We treat them like dogs.
      Person: ohmygod really?!
Me: I was being sarcastic! Goodbye!

    Don't forget the queues!
Despite feeling intense anger towards a queue-jumper, British will often say nothing - staring angrily is more our style. And then there are the rules to say please and thanks: taxi drivers, bus drivers, anyone giving us a service. And the better is that we hate not to be thanked if we think we deserve it.

One thing you Americans need to be aware of.
Half of the time when you're referring to British people, you actually mean English people,so be careful because some people find that annoying.
To some of your surprises,England isn't the only country in Britain, there's Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland too. So if you're saying British and mean English.
    SAY ENGLISH.

    2)politically apathetic
3)Un-written rule Northerners and Southerners hate each other
4)the weather... It either floods or has a heat wave... Or both
    5)Incompetent leaders
    6)The Daily Mail
    7)The Sun
8)complaining about your home city however if anyone from outside your city complains it's WW3
    9)we hate being called European
10)get offended by American TV. Shows or other things that try and portray us as a nation-ie THIS
11)The monarchy-love it or hate it
12)Queuing-we all do it and yet secretly hate it but unlike other nations just shut up and do it

British people aren't snobs generally speaking. Because all my friends and family are nice people, most of the time. However, I'm not saying there are no snobs here, but I have never met any. Just because we like to have nice things doesn't mean we are 'snobs' thank you very much.

British problems as far as I (an American) can tell from my exposure to British people and their comments on RUclips and other internet media:
    1. teeth
    2. America envy
    3. Not enough time to hate on America and Americans over the internet.
    4. The letter "T" in the middle of a word. They can't pronounce them at all. For example, the word "bottom" becomes "bah-um"
    5. More America envy
    6. teeth again.

    • @FromATalkingDonkey
      @FromATalkingDonkey 9 лет назад +96

I do envy some Americans, mainly due to their ignorance, as the common saying goes; ignorance is bliss.
I obviously wish their was more time in the day but unfortunately there is not.
I love the teeth stereotype, it is only really true when it come to the older generations (especially famous people since the pressure to look perfect isn't as strong over the pond in the UK and even less so in the 1900's).I think America has a fair share of negative stereotypes as well as any country does, but we shall not divulge.
And I just want to say that i think the USA a wonderful country, simply beautiful and full of amazing people, obviously there has to be some exceptions.
P.S. I don't really understand number 4. (i thought those damn foreigners pronunciation of their T's is emphasized too much, like bottom = bot-tum).

      @KurNorock 9 лет назад +4

You think I'm crying? Must be a European thing to just cry all the time so I can see how you might think I am crying. But No, I'm not crying. It actually is kind of a compliment that you hate us so much. That's why in my original post i said it was "America envy" and not "america hate". You hate us because you envy us. It's human nature to be jealous of those that have it better than you. That's why there is this ridiculous war on the wealthy. It's simple class envy. The US is the best country on the planet and you are jealous of that so you cling to whatever flaws you can find. Sure, we have fat people, we have stupid people, so do you and every other civilized country on the planet. So throw all the insults you want. But at the end of the day, I'm in this country and you are wherever you are. I'll take your envy as a compliment.

Jaffa Cakes are LEGALLY cakes under EU law after McVities went to the EU court of law to prove so. The reason behind this is that in the UK, chocolate biscuits are taxed, but chocolate cake isn't. Mcvities demonstrated that as Jaffacakes go hard when stale, they are in fact cake. The Court agreed. Its therefore legally binding.

I definitely do the thing where I see someone at a bus stop on the other side of the road that I know or at a train station so I take a different route to not have to socialise with them. If they are about to get on a bus I need to get on,I either get a different bus or wait for the next one.
