Looks interesting. Taking notes. I'm hoping to have more time on my hands for becoming a disciplined reader and decent person next year. 😊
Strange coincidences. I was looking for books about Thaddeus Stevens and ordered Fawn Brodie's biography. I ordered her biography of Burton while I was at it because why not. I'll let you know how it is when I get to it. I also picked up a book called "Africa as Living Laboratory" about the role of science in the colonization of sub-Saharan Africa. Looks pretty dense, but it's my kind of material.
Have a good one. Looking forward to the future hauls.

Bryan, have you ever read anything by Martin Meredith or Thomas Packenham (especially "Scramble for Africa")? They were at on my potential list for writers about Africa, but I ended up getting distracted by other things. I feel Africa gets so little attention in Historathon and I'm trying to correct for that.

@@NicholasOfAutrecourt No, I haven't, but they're on my radar now. And I agree that it's an area that needs more attention. I have a few titles -- including some entries from the Cambridge History of Africa that carry absurd price tags even when I manage to find them "cheap" -- and I'm determined to start working on them next year.

@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 I never see those for less than $30, $40 each. And even then, I fear they'd be too scholarly for a rank neophyte in the subject like me. I hope they didn't cost you that. It's burning a hole in my pocket just thinking about it.

Definitely use that Verso membership to get 50% off all the Rodney books - and everything else they publish, for that matter. Burton is just one of those names I always hear, but am totally ignorant of aside from a few buzzwords. Happy reading this quarter, Anthony!

Cool pile. Emerson on Fire looks great. Revolutionary Spring too I suppose haha. In general what do you think of Verso?

As long as you don't mind a really distinct ideological bent to your reading, they're great. What I like most is that even though they're leftist, it's all kinds of leftism: anarcho-syndicalism, Marxist, social democrat, etc. But I'm all for reading things I don't necessarily agree with, so I love it. Pretty much the same reason I love Liberty Fund, just from the other side.

I hope the Mann book gets reviewed, John, please, pretty please. The d'Annuzio book looks interesting too. Princeton really does put out some special books.

Hughes- Hallett has quite a long, varied list in the UK. The D'Annunzio book has a fun title here, The Pike. I love Emerson and the Transcendentalists. I have a couple of books on Burton, a fascinating man who knew how to live to the full, a real rake hell, but nevertheless a translator, explorer etc.

I'm gradually buying the Isaiah Berlin issues, they are imported from US, so expensive. I need to look at the next Princeton sale next time. I love the lively covers, my older editions are dull in comparison, altho' they are paperbacks, they do seem well made. I recently finished one of his books of essays, and it fell apart, so that needs replacing by a Princeton edition.

Clare, the PUP sale went live on 10/1 and is active through 10/31. I checked what's available in the U.K., but unfortunately none of the Isaiah Berlin essay collections are on it. Feel free to check out my latest community tab post, though. 70% off about 400 items for everyone in the U.K. Let me know if you find anything!

@@NicholasOfAutrecourt I found out that the Berlin books weren't on offer in the UK. I've been sat in the sun reading all afternoon. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll go through the sales list. I'm sure I'll find something. I'm already building up a list for next year. I'm aiming at lest war, more people. I'm gradually also finding biographies of historians. so far they are mainly Macaulay, and Carlyle, but a few moderns too. I forgot to say how much I enjoyed the video. You deserve more support for your channel. Funny how people watch bigoted, ignorant book channels, yet quality channels with real intellectual content are missed.

@@battybibliophile-Clare I think Yale came out with a new version of Carlyle's book on hero worship, which I was going to buy ... before they had some technical issues with their website and prematurely pulled the plug on their site last year. Maybe in 2025! Thanks for all the kind words, Clare!
