Bloody mullet! Being from the midlands, and only getting down to Cornwall for a couple of weeks a year, I kept seeing the MANY mullet cruising around Hayle estuary, at Looe, Polperro, Porthleven, etc, and thinking "Hell, there's sea bass everywhere, we're defo eating some fresh silver, family!" Then learned they were in fact mullet, extremely difficult to catch, and felt seriously duped. Have an interview for a beauty job in Cornwall on Thursday, so will hopefully be relocating the whole family in the next few months. Maybe then I can follow your method and hit into some of the bass pretenders, Sam! Apparently, so long as they're NOT harbour fish, they make for tasty eating. Love fresh fish!
@@FISHISLANDTV Thanks, Sam, been planning on the move for a good few years, but the planets are all in alignment, the tea leaves read right, and the missus, she say YES! Did you take the 3lb one for the pan? Great video as usual, thank you for sharing.
oh well if the Mrs is onboard with the idea then it’s a no brainer lol no I didn’t take it home I rarely take any of the catch home unless iv got time afterwards to prep etc. plus this one came from the outskirts of the harbour so I’d more then likely have to wait until I get one from the rocks out in the slightly cleaner water.
Good job ! they are a challenging fish and they do put up a great fight. We used to fish for them near the mouth of the old marina years ago we would get some nice fish helps to chum the spot for a few days before fishing.
Yes they are ! iv only recently started to enjoy the mullet fishing perhaps since 2 years ago it’s highly addictive. there’s a few rock marks I’m going to hopefully try from perhaps in the next few weeks which should produce a few. it will be nice to get away from the harbour also somewhere perhaps a bit more scenic! thanks for watching !
I tried a while back and completely lost patience with it if I’m being honest.. but my fly fishing gear is sat there building up dust so I might have to get back out there and try a few flicks
Mullet look like super fun. We stayed in a house in south of ireland earlier in the year for a week but I forgot my course fishing gear . All my hooks were too big. And Mullet were everywhere, big ones too cruising around . Drove me absolutely crazy 🤪
fun vid sam , mullet can be bleedy fustrating to catch l have had some fun with a fly rod on crust imitations or red worm imitations work well in the rivers
Nice winkle out of the bigger one bud 😃About to start for thick lip mullet this week I hope. Not been for about 30 years so about time and hopefully the right time too. You used a bigger float than I would of assumed to use. I have AAA and BBB , few 1/2oz normal floats. Like the fact it has built in rubbers to stop and slide , no need for stop knot and with tiny tiny top eyes on mullet rods and going deep, great idea. You added weight too which helps to get the float out further if needed. I like it a lot. Bought in island? Great instructional video. Keep up good work Sam
That whole video was very very similar to my mullet experience, I think they're one of the most crafty fish and they grow big but they ain't really a predatory fish but they sure fight like one, it took 11 misses and I didn't strike on the 12th the fish hooked itself as I was throwing in more bread I just heard the reel scream picked it up keeping tension, it was a fun session in such a beautiful spot that catching the fish 🐟 was a brilliant bonus to a beautiful day.
That all sounds like a great fun trip. I’d have got carried away and probably missed the ferry! iv never even thought of taking a rod over there before… I might give it a go on my next trip over! Tight lines bud!
Noted buddy .. I will try to do this better next time. I was fishing a little to far out for the camera to capture it. there’s fish close in usually so that will be the perfect chance next trip. Thanks for checking out the video.
Took me 26 years to catch a grey mullet and I was just killing time waiting for the ferry in St malo France 🇫🇷 and I had no hopes of catching one I had 3ft of 3lb line under a tiny float and just put a tiny lump of flake on a tiny spade hook and cast it in with the ground bait and missed 11 takes but on 12 I didn't strike and a stunning 4lb mullet just set the drag screaming 10 minutes fight but I was over joyed when I finally landed it.
Try this bro 4 hooks in sequence no float no swivel no lead wrap the white of a fresh slice of bread no crust hook the 1st and last hooks around the slice folded twice to make small quarter size slice tightly can get two small containers blitz 4 mussels in one and 2 sardines in the other dip for weight and cast if you run out of dip dip it in the sea can catch mullet gilt head bream just before dark saddled bream and cow bream use 20 pound mono and don't forget the aeroguard or mozzie repellent have a good day
I think the fishing style may be different where you are buddy... we don't get saddled bream here or cowfish. iv seen what you describe in other videos mostly in the Med they seem to do well with the technics you have mentioned. Thanks for checking out the video its much appreciated !
J hooks with eyes one 5mm down the bottom (if you want to catch more more hooks are better) then three 7mm and two 9mm and then on top the hook you were using connect the bottom and top tightly and continental French loaf cut to size and rolled gold hooks similar to the crust colour if their biting just wrap leaving hooks exposed still joining bottom and top if not sink hook tips are you on telegram or what's app Viber Facebook I'll take a photo and send it to you I use a champagne cork their the best to set the hooks but if their just nibbling no cork
@@martinristic6377 ah sorry bud. It’s a 15ft salmon rod bud. You could use a spinning rod with a medium action which would cushion the fight from fish nicely but ideally you want something 12ft+ in length. Most UK spinning rods are 8ft-10ft
Quality session right there. I really wish we had regular mullet like that to go at. Great sport those small one still go
Glad you enjoyed it matey.
They are great fun on light gear regardless of size!
Thanks again for watching.

Well done. Got him in the end. 👍🐟🐟🐟

thanks for checking the video out
When I hooked that mullet the shoal all followed it during the fight and a few grabbed at the float ,it reminded me of shark's in a feeding frenzy.
That sounds like a hungry shoal of mullet lol
