    The 90's Sonics were the reason I love basketball today. The fact that they were the only real team that gave Jordan and the Bulls even the slightest pause and it happened to be during their 72 win season, is a testament to their tough as nails play style. Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp are still 2 of my favorite players of all time as a kid who grew up in the Bay Area when the Warriors were garbage but still wanted a Bay Area hero to root for, I absolutely fell in love with Gary Payton and his stifling defense. It hurts that the team isn't still in Seattle but I might never have been the basketball fan that I am today if it wasn't for the Seattle Supersonics.

      Also the Jazz in 97 and 98 gave the Bulls some concern. The Bulls needed last second heroics from Jordan and Kerr to beat them. The 93 Suns were very tough as well. Yes, the Sonics in 1996 were a powerhouse. One of the best teams to lose in the finals.

      @Robert Johnson The Sonics put up a much better fight vs Chicago in the 1996 Finals than OKC did vs Miami in 2012. I'm a Chicago fan and I believe Seattle could've won that series if they had let Payton guard MJ from the start. MJ struggled over the last 3 games of the series after Seattle made that defensive switch and the Bulls didn't score more than 87 points during those last 3 games. They just screwed up waiting until they were down 3-0 to let Payton have that chance. OKC won game 1 of the 2012 Finals and then proceeded to get schooled and smacked around by Miami the rest of that series. I knew that group in OKC wasn't gonna win a championship together after that awful performance on the big stage.

      I seen that documentary making Jordan look like he’s a god when was nice but severely over hyped. Jordan received calls that made other players unable to guard him like they did other players; I knew that them and they even showed Magic saying that I’m the documentary with Bird. Also they hyped him up and made it seem he was “struggling at times” dealing with losing his father YEARS ago the reason he was a little “off key” when the glove started guarding him. Were are my real Sonics fans that kept up with the team and knew that DURING the playoffs close to the finals GP sister ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. So do you think maybe he had things in his mind as well? Jordan was nice but severely over hyped.

  • @DerethAC
    @DerethAC 3 года назад +17

    One thing that you forgot to mention is that, once Payton switched onto Jordan, the Sonics destroyed the Bulls in Game 4, giving them their worst playoff loss of Jordan's 6 titles runs. They also beat them by double digits in Game 5 before the Bulls finally finished them off. You really have to wonder what that series would have looked like had Payton guarded Jordan during the entire series.

    Went to school with Shawn Kemp and there were so many fun personalities during this era!!! Unfortunately, the post-Jordan-era hangover had salaries skyrocketing, many players focusing on their individual stats and shoe contracts over team B-ball, and the league cutting back on hand checking and physicality to try and get higher scoring games to attempt to inject more energy into void left behind when they were gone. Those Sonics were arguably the biggest challenger to the Bulls, which is why Dennis Rodman's addition to the roster was so effective. Almost like having Payton's attitude, someone to challenge Kemp at the rim, and a brightly colored distraction, to give Jordan, Pippen, and the rest of the bench room to work. Utah Jazz were more meticulous and crafty at trying to shut them down, but didn't have the same energy or depth as those Sonics. Probably my favorite NBA Finals series of all time.

    If you get to watch the 6 games played for the 1996 NBA finals, you guys will realize the following:
    1. Shawn Kemp played those games so good enough to become the NBA Finals MVP, but he wasn’t granted... he deserved it though.
    2. Michael Jordan scored the lowest amount of points in a finals series vs the 1996 Sonics scoring less than 30 points per game when he used to score over 35 on the previous series... that’s a fact, you can check it up

    • @carlosenriquetrejo3599
      @carlosenriquetrejo3599 4 года назад +6

      3. Gary Payton really stopped MJ on games 4 and 5, not so much on game 6, but consider that it was Hershey Hawkins guarding Air on the first 3 games, which was not the best option as we all could see. With GP on MJ the series would’ve gone to game 7 and anything could’ve happened. 4. Sam Perkins and Det were under their usual contribution to the Sonics game... if they had been sharper, particularly Sam (who played garbage, you can watch the video for the series for yourselves) who could’ve done things better. 5. In short, as a fan of the Sonics but recognizing the greatness of Michael Jordan... we were not that far of getting the title that 96 if only such factors had been observed, corrected and emphasized. Bring our Sonics back!

    People tend to forget to mention that the Sonics won both games against the Bulls during the regular season. A team that only lost 10 games all together.

      add to that the fact that when George Karl put Payton on Jordan in Game 4, that 0-3 deficit became 2-3.... if only he did that matchup at the very start of the series.

    • @batman9512
      @batman9512 4 года назад +1

      @@jamirimaj6880 I distinctly remember that Nate McMillan missed games 2 and 3 with a back injury; that was one less good defender to throw at Jordan and the reason Karl was reluctant to throw Payton at Jordan all game. Once McMillan returned, the Sonics started to roll. If McMillan were healthy, the series might have at least gone 7.

    Key Arena was a fun place to be during that era. The whole package was a real treat as a lifelong fan. Players, gameplay, coaching, announcer, play by play call, arena, fan base, Seattle in the 90's. Wow.
    MJ smoked all the great players and teams. Gnarly. Rough how it ended for the Supersonics and the theft.
    Trophy and finals banner, and conference championship trophies and banners went to OKC. Gross. If the Seattle Supersonics come back, maybe OKC will give all that history back to the city where it happened.

    To show you where, when and how I grew up: Born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American (showing you HOW I grew up). Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp are certainly a huge part of my Sonics fan days! 1993-94 and 1996 were among the best years of my life. I have long thought that I'd live to be 48, and pass away in 2021. Life hasn't been happy for me, since my Dad unexpectedly passed away in 2003. I want my 2021 funeral to be "music-based," and "sports based." I might even ask for a couple of my many sports jerseys to be buried with me in my casket. Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton highlights are among those I will cherish, during this likely final year of my life.
