If only I have to do two stretches, It would be the cough stretch and this one.
In my point of view and experience being able to well rotate externally the hip helps a lot in middle splits.
If you can externally rotate your hips in the pancake position then the middle split is easily reachable to you.
Yeah I got better at middles after improving hip ER
If I am not wrong, I have seen you do the middle splits in a video years ago...will this help for front splits also ? I want to get down to front split....was able to about 4 years ago but then stopped stretching and now it's gone 😅

when I contract for external rotation and lift my foot, my hip hurts. Isn't this too intense? but in your videos you often say to induce a contraction as hard as I can
