      They have usually changed on the Metro Network though. Epping became South Morang and later Mernda, St Albans became Sydenham and later Sunbury etc.

      Most passengers board and leave the trains at Bendigo, Ballarat or Geelong. So that's why they're named as such would be my guess, at least with Bendigo because it's actually the Deniliquin line.

    East Pakenham is going to be a lonely terminus. For now the residential catchment is pretty sparse. Almost all of the nearest homes are on acreages and there's still a lot of vacant land nearby. The acreages could be subdivided but the locals might not be keen on that.
    On the south side is a small industrial estate, the freeway, then farmland.
    Most terminus stations have at least a few shops nearby (with the exception of Alamein and arguably Cranbourne), but not East Pakenham.
    In retrospect I'm surprised they didn't electrify to Nar Nar Goon and terminate trains there.

    Good vid
    1:37 - There were two separate occasions in the late 1970s and 1980s where both a Comeng and Hitachi went to the end of electrification in Traralgon.
    A Harris train, however, went beyond there to Sale and via the Maffra Line in 1970 behind a B Class loco.

  • @peterelvery
    @peterelvery 26 дней назад +7

    Interesting. So used to everything between Bondi, Lithgow, Kiama and Newcastle having 1500v DC overhead here in NSW. Didn't realize electrification was that limited in VIC.

    • @zoomosis
      @zoomosis 26 дней назад +1

      The line to Traralgon was electrified originally only for locos hauling coal briquette traffic through the hills of East Gippsland. Passenger trains at the time then shared the same locos. Ultimately the briquette traffic tailed off and it became uneconomic to keep the overhead maintained just for passenger trains.
      There are probably a few factors at play in Sydney. The lines to Lithgow, Newcastle and Wollongong all have some decent hills. Compared to Southern Cross to Geelong which is basically flat. Also Wollongong/Central Coast/Newcastle all have higher populations than Geelong.
      The line to Geelong should probably be electrified, though Melbourne's suburban trains are less comfortable than V/Line's VLocity carriages (and arguably even the Sprinters), so passengers might consider it a downgrade.
      The only other large regional towns near Melbourne are Ballarat and Bendigo but these are too far away to justify rail electrification for now.
      There was talk over the years of electrifying to the outer suburb of Melton (on the way to Ballarat) but nothing has come of it.
      The Regional Rail Link (RRL) completed in 2015 wasn't electrified so there are still diesel-only stations at the start of the RRL line at Deer Park, only 18 km from (diesel-fume-filled) Southern Cross station.

    • @peterelvery
      @peterelvery 25 дней назад +1

      @@zoomosis Thanks for that.
      Wollongong was a major steel & coal city so before modern diesel electric locos existed, electrification would have made sense for heavy haulage, electric intercity trains being a bonus.
      Re the comfort of trains to Geelong, you'd need a comfortable specialist EMUs for that. Sydney has a fleet of entirely suitable V Sets about to become redundant! Of course they are about 50 years old and there's a slight track gauge issue😂
      No electrification to Melton😲That's a suburb of Melbourne! Like not having electric trains to Mt Druitt here.

    Final regular electric services between Pakenham and Warragul were on 5.12.1999. Elecrail also ran two specials on that day which were the Tait set and L 1162 on a short train.
    I think the only electric trains beyond Pakenham after that were new EMU sets being tested.

  • @Wdeane1957
    @Wdeane1957 26 дней назад

    The line was electrified to Traralgon. Electric locos hauled passenger cars and some freight trains. I vaguely remember very long trains with briquettes being hauled by 2 or 3 electric locos before natural gas was fully available in Melbourne.
    There was a service with Comeng trains to Warrigal for a while.

It may have run to Longwarry, although I'm not aware of it having done so. But beyond the station at Longwarry was a low footbridge that it may or may not have been able to fit under. But I seem to recall that the curved platform at Drouin was the reason it did not run to Warragul.

    Time to do away with the current naming convention IMO. If we used non-geographical names, like London does, or letters, like New York does, they wouldn't need to keep changing the names every few years. It would also solve the confusion of short services being named differently, eg if you want to get to Footscray you might be expecting a catch a Sunbury train, and so would assume that a Watergardens train was no use to you, if you weren't familiar with the line.

    Warragul is my home station currently and I commute it on it daily to go to/from work, and it’s obvious that it used to be a terminus since it has remnants of a yard and the large station building which used to have a refreshment room, through now that’s a Cafe that’s only open during the morning peak. There’s still a few sidings but there used to be more, they don’t get used much though, mostly for Evie stabling during works as well as some Vlocity sets if they can’t go to Traralgon for whatever reason.
