In This Video Our Cost Of Living In the Philippines, Its Higher Than We Expected!, we were really interested in learnign about things like this before we came to the Philippines and therefore we wanted to share our actual costs here in Iloilo City as well.

Two years ago we made a plan we Sold Everything & Now Living In The Philippines On A Budget in 2022, we had paid our debts, sold everything and made a budget. I am a retired USA citizen from Pennsylvania. I am living with my wife and 10 year old child in a rural community in Batangas. My total monthly costs are less than $700 for everything. The best advice I could give you is to Get OUT of the city. I would be homeless and starving trying to live on $700 in Pennsylvania! That would not even pay for rent of a similar home.
It's all relative to your income and how you want to live ....me I need city life ..... Iloilo is awesome and for 1500 per month you can live comfortably here

If your receiving Medicare there are hospitals in the Philippines that honors Medicare and if your retired military some hospitals honors Medicare and Tricare for life. Asian hospitals have windows for Tricare and Medicare patients cut waiting time .
There are places in the Philippines yes $700 is reasonable, my in-laws have old farms house, fish and shrimp farming’s and vegetables, trees plantation is abundant. Twice a year is regular harvest the utilities is minimal using old fashioned stove for cooking and lakes freshwater, this is ideal for retirement after all your hardworking year’s time to relax and contribute to the community your education and experience can help.
I have a friend lives in the rural Batangas, said it is boring and nothing to do. No way I could live there. I want things to do, not living in a super province.
There is thriving and surviving who wants to just survive when you can thrive.
Been living with my Filipina wife at Mandurriao in a gated community since the last 5 years, though a much smaller house, and have a car - the budget you mention is quite realistic. We eat out more, and occasionally travel, though only in Panay - we spend about 100,000 pesos or 2000 USD a month, when we are here, which is about 4 months a year. Am a professional seafarer, and have a few years more before I retire.

I am 76 years old, very healthy, living in Quezon City. A few weeks ago. I had a medical emergency ,was rushed to a local hospital ER where I spent three days. Nurses, medical staff, resident doctors, cardiologists were excellent.
Costs for ER, X-rays, MRI, two EKGs(one was a 24-hour EKG), Echogram, blood labs, meals, resident doctor, 2 cardiologists, COVID tests, PPE, etc. totaled $1,308 US.
Follow up appointments with neurologist and cardiologist were $18 US each.

When it comes to budget and expenses.. things are no different than any country.. it depends on the lifestyle and comfort you want or expect. Yes in the Philippines your dollar is worth more but if you're not careful you will end up short on budget and long on expenses.. so for each person or family the budget is going to be different.
Kind of sad to see the jeepneys go. I like the individual artistic aspect of them and the fact that you are supporting an individual business owner when you ride one. They're the first unique item you notice when arriving in the Philippines and it's sad to see them becoming a thing of the past.
i miss the pollution that those jeepneys belch out...ive been wearing masks LONG before covid..
@@laurencehyde2168 exhaust problems can be addressed. I always had similar feelings about the tricycles. Making exhaust checks part of the license renewal process would do away with the problem and also create work for the mechanics.

There is a cheap satellite dish that does tv and wifi I think it costs only p525.00 a month if you watch a channel called Dustin backpack he showed it on his channel a few months ago. That is what we will be getting after we arive in Iloilo mountains in February.

Really appreciate your content, we bought our house here in iloilo a few years ago for and have had family living in it to watch after it once it completed construction. Anyway this November through February is our first time spending any length of time here and while my wife is from here I'm not, so I found you guys and have been enjoying another outsiders perspective. If you see the covering off some of the wire then call the power company, and in the middle of the night go check the wire where you find the covering off the wires and also follow the wire that is connected to it so that you know where it is going to!!
yup, to make sure there are no jumper wires tapping into your electricity.

The key here is budget and your standard of living.There are so many poor people on this country but still manage to survive.Actually the prices of commodities indeed increase but If you will budget wisely and bought only what you need and not to dine in restaurant more often you can still survive.
They already budget wisely! Everyone has different capabilities. I mean, it is a budget that they can afford and lifestyle they want to live. We all live differently.
I think if you're a single guy (little or no female expenses), eat at home, eat healthy, and don't use too much electricity (a real challenge here), you can be relatively comfortable on $600-$700/month. Start adding other people to the mix and the price will quickly go up.
on a positive note, i think you have chosen a very wonderful community to live in. Iloilo is one of the most livable city as ranked and awarded the distinction in legit national and international award giving bodies. as regard to cost of living and expenses, i guess you are still on the adjustment phase and trying to figure things out on your budgeting and finances. living in a city is indeed a bit higher costs than living in the provinces but then iloilo city is indeed a good choice for city living, a bit laid back yet highly cultural, historical, environment- friendly, sweet people and balanced life - "where the past meets the present" and a sustainable development. waiting for your DINAGYANG experience this January 2023! keep safe always and all the best, mga langga!
I see Davao City ranked as safest city in Philippines and they have lots of bombings there, So I don't put much faith in what you read on the internet.
@@mikejones5364 Lol! No bombings in Iloilo ever happened. I lived there for 27 years and vist every year. Never heard of one bombing. My 3 brothers are retired US military and retired there. They just sit back and relax, watch the calendar and play golf in Santa Barbara golf course.
@@romeoETmike I have always wanted to visit iloilo, How is the night life? I am there more to party and drink. I love Manila for nightlife, Davao suxs, Cebu can be pretty good.
@@mikejones5364 Night life in Iloilo sucks. It's a family-oriented retirement place. Nice medical facilities, a lot of US military retirees using VA anf TriCare. Not ideal place for visitors who like to chase women. Go to Cebu.

Thats why I will move to a place more at the mountains, if you are living in the right spot, often you dont even need AC, or even a fan, because of a nice breeze. There is a reason why so many foreigners live in the hills around Dumaguete. Also, you can sit outside and its not so hot and you can even have a lot of shade from trees that you have there.
I will never give up good living to go live in the mountains where your standard of living is low. A lot of foreigner's who do live in the mountains don't have enough money to live in the better area's of living is why they go there. I am not that desperate after a young Philippina girl to go and live in the mountains so far away from every thing.

When we went on vacation for 1 & half month last year, we went out all the time more likely 90% of our time in the Philippines. We spent $1,500😅 mostly 50% eating out & 50% food delivery (food panda or grab).
600 usd or less depending on the exchange rate is good for that huge house .. I built a 100 square meters house in Solano in 2017 .. we have a sari sari on our house . We have a fridge and soda cooler with glass doors 🚪 . Our power bill is 4,000 to 5k a month for all . I have a 2.5HP wall Aircon but don't use it much.when we built our house the rate was 45 or so and material was cheaper . Her family are skilled workers and that helped too . Our lot is 200 sq meters .
Great vid! Just got our elec bill in Samar... P11,888 or about $214 usd. Keep in mind we live a completely western lifestyle in a fully air-conditioned house. Not really bad considering we have no house payment! Now, to put this in perspective, this equates to about $.28 cents (usd) p/kwh, and when we are in Guam we are currently paying about $.42 p/kwh.
Electric is very expensive here compared to other nearby SE Asian countries. Most of my electric bills in the US were much less than $200. Ours in Naga is about 5K/month, but we don't use it all the time. With just a fan we'd be miserable.

Go check the power lines from your power meter to your house, I have seen people cutting into the power lines more then once. As I have told you in the past that we own lots of property in the province of Iloilo, but up in the mountains everyone around us is my wife's family. But in the city brgy so-oc is where I have seen it done alot!!!

We still have a few years to go, but I follow the different trends and advice, to realistically understand how much of a budget we can live on and save the rest. when we retire in the Philippines ( Iloilo) in 2-3 years .. we are looking forward for our monthly budget around $2k-2.5k for just us.. me and my husband who dream of retiring in the Phils… retirement should be living your life comfortably to enjoy the rest of your life after working so many hard years. Wow that is dirt cheap. There are so many estimates out there ranging from $500 up to $5000 or more a month. I'll be out there in March with a budget around 3,500 - 4,000 USD a month. This video definitely calmed some nerves. Have you two visited Cebu yet?
Bianca is half Filipino, so I think she's covered by our health insurance PHILHEALTH. not a problem to at least inquire about it. Even in emergencies she'd hardly pay for medical with PHILHEALTH
Excellent informative video Michael. For me I can't afford to live in the Philippines because my medications I need monthly would cost over $1,500.00 Canadian per month. Here with my wife's benefit plan it's 100% free. Medical services and medications are very expensive in the Philippines. 60,000 pesos per month for medications in the Philippines is definitely not affordable.

Usually, local electric companies/cooperatives charge higher than Meralco. We are 3 in the family. We have 2 inverter AC units running for more than 12 hours daily, an Electric clothes dryer, an Automatic Washer we regularly use, a 2500w shower heater, and a 15cu ft refrigerator. But still, our electric consumption from MERALCO last month was around 359kWh, which is about 3,920 pesos. You are right; your power consumption may be in your water pump. :-) try to check for water leaks and the overflow valve of your tank so that it will automatically shut off when it is full. A 13,000+ electric bill is too much for Two people. :-) I'm from Laguna Area near the Enchanted kingdom. :-) been following you guys, and I enjoy watching your videos. Keep safe.

To save an electric to almost 50% to 100% try using renewable energy. I save bills from my lights waterpumps, and even cable tv. Thru my solar panels and inverters. I was encourage to use this when we were struct by typhoon odette last year and all power supplies were damage for a couple of months. This panels harvest energies from the sunlight even its not fully bright or cloudy. Just try to research or ask from solar panel stores. Its a great help. You may only buy once but the service of the solar is unlimited. You can save more money on it.
if you stay in the city wherever in the philippines is very expensive live-out in the city area... you go in the provinces like mountains and leaving there fresh air no noisey and pollution... i am proud a probensiyano i grow up in the province... now i am here in the Dubai UAE as overseas worker❤🫰
It's not easy for a foreigner to live a life of comfort in the Philippines if you don't have a solid source of income. But if money is not a problem (like retirees from USA) then to live there is full of comfort.
Yes I spent also 13k in one month for electricity because I used my air conditioner nonstop!!! So I was shocked of my bill. When I used only the electric fan it became 2-3k electricity consumption!!! The air cons are killing us with the high rate!!!

check all the electricity wiring and the pump system ,buy a separate meter (very cheap)

Just came back from spending 3 weeks in Janiuay (small place outside of Iloilo). Love it there want to live there. Very impressed how you two are making it work. Best of luck with everything.
i buy my lot in this subdivision Monterosa subdivision and total i paid for everything to build is $60,000 dollars 4 bedroom 2 bathroom, i am located beside this clubhouse. i noticed different price now than before, material is high, gas is high, food & vegetables are high, so need to control your budget. i agree the electric bill is high, try to cut some budget, hopefully next month January the bill will change since the weather nice & cool . living in this place close to the city our totally different. in united states we spend more than this house prices is ridiculous even your renting cost you $1,500. plus your electric bill, water, cable, foods, car insurance, health insurance, car loan, etc. that’s one of the reason i move to iloilo city philippines🇵🇭 age 60, tired and stressfull live in united states. you just work to pay your bills. now we strecthing budget our money until 2 years to collect our pension social security. i think better to live in the philippines than other country, more cheaper for people retired.
Why is your bill super expensive? The water pump takes up much electricity based on my experience when young. But that still doesn't lead up to 13K++. In Manila, our electricity is only up to 6K. I hope you can achieve the 8K electricity bill.
I would like to share, for Electric you can lower it if you can turn off things part of the house you are not using via Main box, Your Water system Setup cost too much electricity
Your house rent is expensive for just the 2 of you might as well buy a house or rent somewhere in the province less than 15k.
Now about water buy a Filter Unit that can be connected to the Faucet instead of buying water from a Water Station to replace the Filter will cost 200 pesos for 2months use, The Filter Unit is only 3K.

I hear people all the time saying that they pay between six to ten thousand pesos per month but the truth is that at that price you're giving up a lot of comfort and security.....I believe 15k to 25k pesos is a good ballpark in Iloilo or even in Bacolod
In the province I had a place for 3k ...no security, attached to a Sari Sari store, no Air Con.....so you get what you pay for
I’m currently living in Iloilo City and I’ll say this, 13k for an electricity bill is very expensive. In our household, we have 2 ACs, a refrigerator and a PC that is running for almost 24 hrs since me and my sister are currently working from home but usually our monthly electricity bill ranges around 3k-4k pesos. Could you check the meter? Maybe someone is stealing your electricity.
We shit our power off at the breaker for anytime we need to and will have it checked out soon
@@BiancaBeyond I’m not sure if the area you’re currently living in is under MORE Power or ILECO. But one thing’s for sure, Iloilo City enjoys one of the cheapest rates in the region lower than Antique, Bacolod City, Aklan and Capiz

average cost now of elect with MORE is 14.67 per kw as of our latest bill (Dec)..
That's right Mike. Budgeting is necessary. Turn off lights if not in use. Air con is only necessary during summer time or you can use inverter type of aircon . In the evening, You can use it for 4hrs tops then use electric fan till morning. Thirty thousand budget is ok including food for the month. In your case , I think 800 to 900 U.S. Dollars is okay for you. It's reasonable. Just a suggestion.

INVERTER APPLIANCES like air-conditioner, refrigerator, etc is a MUST, it will reduced your electric bill up to 80% (smart budgeting on utilities).
*shop @ the local markets, bulk or wholesale supermarkets and hunt for "imported goods" deals online (marketplace).
*homecook meals in general are way healthier and cheaper (cooking Fil. recipe could be an interesting vlog content).
dine once in a while @ midrange fastfood/buffet restaurants with seasonal promos and try some local carinderias.
*take the public transpo in general like aircon buses, angkas, (grab?), E-jeepney, joyride, train, trike etc..
my wife's family live in Lambunao Iloilo, it's about 45mins drive away from the city. I am glad you found a nice place there in iloilo. watching from Saskatchewan 🍁
1/2 of cost of living in the u.s with better quality meat, fish, eggs and more than 50%of restaurant costs are enough to live in a beautiful country with beautiful people. You have everything you need there. I was there in December for a month and felt blessed I can eat good food anytime of the day and not bullshir food like in the u.s. it's a safe country, you can navigate around speaking English.

That electric bill was high but the house is real big and I'll be interested in next months reduction from the water issue.
Alot of times the pressure tank on pump outside will cycle alot because the pressure tank is water logged . Air compresses and water doesn't. But if you don't add air to tank it goes flat like a tire. So pump has pressure switch that turns on at 20 psi and shuts off at 40 psi. So tank pressure when it's completely empty, another words you tap side of it sounds hollow then add 18 psi .
But alot of times the tank is full of water a d air needs to be added with pump off till tank empty then set pressure . In pressure tank to prevent off on off on syndrome.
Wife and I spilt the year between Batangas and the US. For what it cost the 2 of us in the US, we can pretty much provide for the entire family while in the Philippines.
Not to say we have not dropped a ton of cash while here. We have a car, owner style jeep and a trike. Bought all of the families land, done tons of improvements and currently building a completely new house for her grandparents that I am estimating at 1.5 mill Piso (hopefully not too much more, lol)
We do our calculations at 50 piso as well.
We were 400 km from the meter with a major voltage drop to around 160 volts. Added a transformer. We went years ago to an off grid solar system & just use electricity only when we need heavy loads & solar capacity is low. Meralco Electric is Luzon is expensive & lots of jumpers or people getting free electricity bypassing the meters . Also when meter reads are done if you have no consumption when we were using all solar, they just use the same usage level as the prior month. They call this an estimate and you must pay it. Even with dual inverter aircons. So we just let go in collections & use the solar now. There are thousands of people getting free electricity or adjusted meters to understate the true consumption.

I live in an amazing town just outside of Medellin El Retiro and I pay $40 usd a month. Colombia seems to be way cheaper and I can drink the towns water as it’s treated. I pay $22 usd for 250 meg download speed.
Also the average year round temp is 25 Celsius and you don’t need heat or air conditioning.
I have met some people who have moved there it is definitely one of the cheapest place to relocate to indeed

Thank you for sharing this video. While you are talking, I am calculating your expenses with the US $$ dollar conversion. Well, it is still affordable, like you said, it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to have. One thing you will love in the Philippines is the people and the value of the culture.
This is a follow up on my previous comment a while ago. I think you have to install solar panel like what i did here in Negros . 5 kw power output worth around 300,000 pesos. Of course with Net Metering device and without battery. But if have battery, maybe an additional 100k is needed. Pretty sure you will have zero electric bill each month. Just a suggestion Mike. nice place, if you want to live a western life style it cost a western budget. if live like Filipino style is cheaper.
Iloilo is like a 2nd home to me. However, they have just about the highest cost of electricity in the Philippines. After recently visiting Davao, I think that is my new favorite city.
For basic medications for blood pressure, you can check the local barangay health centers, they might have free generic ones.
You just have to check with your cardiologist/family doctor if it's okay to move to those or do a 2 week or 4 week trial to see if it suits you.
I have hypertension and the medication/maintenance I was on would burn a little over Php 700 for a bottle with 30 pills in it.
That's good information for others. We would rather leave those services for those that really need it.
Yes, your numbers are high compared to my calculation. But like you said, it all depends on how you are costing/spending your budget. Given that you are in rent mode and is dictated by your future plans, investing in a property is a smart approach. This should lower your cost in the long term and an investment as well.

Iloilo is great. My parents built their dream home in Pototan. I think my Uncle who just built his house in Pototan is selling. Since they live in the US

78 K+ is a lot of money for a month for just the 2 of you. AN ORDINARY FILIPINO FAMILY CANT AFFORD THAT not unless a rich family. Lucky you guys that you can enjoy your stay here. The cost of living in the Philippines is no different than where I live now . Southeast Wisconsin. The weather is the difference, and that's about it

@mj405 And yet I will never have to pay even my "low price" monthly cost of this condo in this mountain town I am in in Arkansas for 1400 bucks per month, I can live for 3 or 4 months with that in these South East Asian countries, depending on how not lazy you are, you can stretch that amount of money for half a year.

On Leyte my electric averages 800 pesos a month. Concrete house, fans, refrigerator, and electric well pump,,,,, no air con,
Paid 900,000 php for house and 600 sq meters of land.
My average cost per month for three years is about 20,000 php, after buying the house.
make sure that the way your water is set up that it doesn't suck back into the community system with the meter only registering flow in your positive direction.
Turn off your ref at night and turn it on during daytime..it will save much.. remember it is easy way to get more subscribers in the Philippines .. that's why most of foreign RUclipsrs start their yt channel in ph.. because you know most people in the pH appreciate of what you are doing ...88k subs a little more it will 100k subs soon
Turning off your refrigerator will not translate to a bigger savings 😊. If you own a smaller refrigirator It will barely consume 500 pesos a month. 😊 An inverter Refrigirator only consumes roughly 500pesos a month.
Your monthly budget is about A$2300/month which is cheap and renting your place. Here the average is about A$8000/month if you have a mortgage or minimum of about A$5000./month if you are renting...
Also sorry to say that iloilo charges the highest for electricity in the Philippines

it will depend on your life style and how you budget! but having a huge house, definitely will baloon your expenses.. but there are lots of ways to lessen your expenses, you will figure it out, depends on your priorities. :) Peace and Blessing
I would seriously make an inquiry and speak with the landlord to have them explain the configuration of that meter or the utility person to make sure everything is correct the height and the position in general of the meter seem a bit off, I remember you had to put your phone on a stick or something with the video activated to read it. What is the update on the termite situation that too would fall back on the landlord, you guys should be compensated somehow while they mitigate that issue?
Landlord hasn't come for the water issues or the termites so I think we need to deal with this ourselves and hire someone to inspect it all
@@BiancaBeyond I mentioned getting some diesel fuel and a spray bottle for some areas under the house/sink out of the way places if you see them active. Termite treatments are expensive in the states not sure what it is there, I felt bad for you guys upon discovering both the water and termite issue.

I thought that electricity should be only 5000, 00 plus. When we came to the Philippines for about a month, we had our air con every night and sometimes during the day because hubby will not tolerate the heat so he turned both the air con and fan at the same time, it went up to 7000.00+ pesos.. I did not like to be bitten by mosquito so I had 2 fans on always day and night. Yes you might have to check the wiring so you can use it on other things like miscellaneous. 1500 dollars a month should be good but not going to electricity.

The key to living cost effective is to your rent done as in buy a condo or townhouse. Then live a healthy lifestyle take advantage of omega 3 fish eat eggs with healthier yolks and organic food in Philippines. Water is cheap there. You have to live well but to be frank there's nowhere in the world thar is cheap right now. There's some places that's maybe cheaper but I probably wouldn't want to live there. I was in cebu and was so amazed at how we could just eat wherever and not sweat the cost. I can go in a dental clinic get my filling done within a day and pay 20usd per tooth. The problem is if you don't earn enough then it's going to be a problem wherever you live.

I'm renting a condo now in MAKATI and I don't need my air con on ( in March & Aoril) between 11am to 4pm. I think my building is insulated. I only got water sick on a one month Thailand visit. Not in the Philippines. I got BETTER when I got back. Im very negative on things and The Philippines is actually changing my thought process. I can go to a good doctor here at at Lukes under $30.00. One month meds around $10.00. .Give this place a try.

Holy crap! Over 900KW per month? I have a 5 bed 3 bath (280m2) with 24/7ac, a couple of fans, and I'm always forgetting to shut lights off, and still my bill averages 545KW @P5 - 5500. Yes, Metro Manila is cheaper than your company, but consumption is consumption no matter where you are. Not sure about your electric bill there but here you can see past usage. Maybe you can compare, and if it then seems strange, call them and open a case.
13k a month electricity is way too much for 2 people. either it is the water pump that you pointed out or someone is ripping you off or stealing electricity. Also check the billing period just to make sure it did not include the previous occupant’s usage. id say 5k a month should be more than enough

Your 1600 us dollars a month considering your lifestyle and large monthly house rent and electricity costs is not that steep or expensive. Easily the floor space and rent costs with same conveniencescan save you 15k a month.
my family monthly allowance is 7k. market money, electricity, with internet payment also. living n the province of iloilo. we are wise in spending.

I honestly don't know if the rent of the house is high or low given that it is a full house and lot.. maybe you can check on apartments which costs 10,000 atmost and idk how much condominium rents are but maybe they'll be cheaper i guess and the amenities are complete too. Tho u have mentioned in your previous videos you dont want to live in a condo or apartment but I think if it's just a temporary thing, then you'll definitely save lots 'til you'll have your own house and lot here and not just renting.
In terms of transportation, i suggest you use the app inDrive instead of grab because it's almost 50% lower than grab. Also, jeepneys are definitely good choice if you're not in a rush and don't have lots of stuffs to bring. And I don't think they'll phase out the old jeepneys round here. Bike is also a good alternative since bike lanes here are safe..

I'm semi retired in Canada...starting collecting early retirement pension and with your example or calculations of the cost per month living in an urban city (not Manila) Iloilo....this is almost lower than Manila. Base on your lifestyle...its an above average living standard for a typical average young filipino professional ...which not many average people there can afford. So I conclude that 1600 US per month (my pension is only 500 US per month) is still way over my budget to live in Iloilo....what more if it's in a bigger city like Manila...😮💨😔

Is that an official electric bill from the electric company? If not request the official bill 13k seems quite high. Is your AC an inverter type? But overall your total monthly expenses equals 1 month rent alone in the USA so big savings compared to that.
