I can't get over the whiplash of having "translated literature" be a separate category and not like at least half of all books published /discussed. I know that English book industry is dominated by books written in English, but that's such an issue. I can't imagine being so closed off from the rest of the world.

That issue is literally why I do this: to draw attention away from English and towards the rest of the world.

      Yesss. Thank you!
I guess it's the minority conundrum of making a designated space to highlight what doesn't get enough attention, until it's permeated the mainstream enough and it doesn't feel like it's a siloed, sparate category.
From a non-native English perspective, this format feels jarring and, for lack of a better term, foreign, because outside the English world, translated fiction is often the majority (sadly, the majority of translated fiction also tends to be translated from English). But yeah, in the context of the English book culture it makes total sense. Thank you for highlighting this.

I find it fascinating that translators are not put on the covers of book. I don't think I saw any book that had the translator on the front when a book is translated into Hungarian . And to be honest until I started watching you I haven't even thought of this, but you are so right they should be on the cover with the writer.

The premise of the story is always the author but everything else can very easily be the translator. I always question, how much of thos description is actually the author and not the translator? I read a very shitty poem in it's original language and found the most gorgeous translation of it. It didn't directly state what the author stated but the premise was correct but also altered for the foreign audiences and culture.

Just finished both The Empusium and The Season of the Swamp a couple of days ago - both so good! Really want to get to Your Utopia and Aftershock - I actually had the latter out of the library for a while but didn't get to it before the due date... I'd never heard of The Mark, that sounds really interesting! The Korean fantasy sounds intriguing as well!

You should read Fang Si-Chi's First Love Paradise by Lin Yi-Han if you're looking for other translated works. It has barely been mentioned by anyone and it's kind of disappointing how little people have talked about it, probably because it tackles the subject of grooming, rape, domestic violence, and trauma. It's a fantastic read and had me bawling for the first time in years.
Anyway, this video made me wanna look for these books, since you made them sound so interesting 😂
