Sir Ganga Ram is indeed the Father of Lahore. Lahore will never be recognized without the indelible humanitarian landmarks of Sir Ganga Ram Hospitable, Fountain House, and so on. He laid Railway line from Sangla Hill to his village Gangapur near Nankana Sahib on his own pocket. I visited his house, where now a migrant family lives. We are thankful to Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad, a Lahori too, for recording Lahore history digitally without any racial or religious bias.

Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed is a great Punjabi as ever. Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs who had to uproot themselves and come to India also remember their days in United Punjab with great fondness. In India too allover in many many cities like Delhi, Agra Lucknow, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Sasaram(Bihar), there are great land mark buildings which enrich our history and culture. Sir Ganga Ram earned his degree in civil engineering from the then Thomson College of Civil Engineering Roorkee which is rechristened as IIT Roorkee. In my first year of studies at the than university of Roorkee, I stayed in Ganga Bhawan, which a hostel donated by the great man named Sir Ganga Ram. For the favour of information. Even my forefathers belong to Lahore and then they traveled to Karachi and during partition migrated to Gujarat, India. Many stayed in Pakistan but we lost contact as it was not easy to communicate in those days. Many adopted Islam and now this is 75 years old story and we don't have any records. As you agreed and said that there was a BIG contribution of Hindus and Sikhs but that was an old time and we need not praise or regret it. I wish both nations come on a common platform and forget all grievances!! With your this article, I can say that "I am proud to be a Hindu!!"

Hello respected sir, I am from Hisar Haryana, very good information given by you about sir Ganga Ram, Once you hasitate to say, it was indian civil service, which after partition convert into indian administrative services,sir Ganga Ram hospital in delhi and many beautiful shapely unique building he built for maharaja of patiyala and I think some in Faridkot for maharaja of faridkot.
He studied civil engineering from Thomson Engineering College Roorkee now called IIT Roorkee. In those days diploma was awarded and had only 30 seats Very tough to get admission. My great grandfather also passed out with diploma in civil engineering in late 1890s.
Sir Ganga Ram's contribution for Lahore and Punjab cannot be forgotten. He was undoubtedly father of modern Lahore. However, some corrections. Sir Ganga Ram was a civil servant. He was employed in the Public Works department and entrusted the task of building some of the magnificent buildings in Lahore by the British Governor of that time. The Fatima Jinah medical college Lahore was also built on 100% charity money given by Sir Ganga Ram's widow immediately his death. Ironically this college was renamed distorting history and the plaque in the name of the Devi was removed.

He is the father of Kabir Bedi (Film Actor). He was a member of Communist Party and married to Freda Houlston, a British woman. They were based in Lahore till partition. She went to jail during Indian Freedom Movement and became a Tibetan monk in her later years.

He studied civil engineering from Thomson Engineering College Roorkee now called IIT Roorkee. In those days diploma was awarded and had only 30 seats Very tough to get admission. My great grandfather also passed out with diploma in civil engineering in late 1890s.

Sir Ganga Ram's contribution for Lahore and Punjab cannot be forgotten. He was undoubtedly father of modern Lahore. However, some corrections. Sir Ganga Ram was a civil servant. He was employed in the Public Works department and entrusted the task of building some of the magnificent buildings in Lahore by the British Governor of that time. The Fatima Jinah medical college Lahore was also built on 100% charity money given by Sir Ganga Ram's widow immediately his death. Ironically this college was renamed distorting history and the plaque in the name of the Devi was removed.
