that final cutscene where Mabosstiff picks up the Pokeball absolutely tore me to pieces...never thought I'd get so emotionally attached to a rival's storyline
At the start: "Hmm, not sure I like Arven." After the 2nd Titan: Arven: "So, now you know why I have to do this. I have t-Where are you going?" Player character, getting atop of their legendary ride whilst bursting with years of Pokemon experience as if it were an aura: "We have some Titans to slay, Herbs to collect and a Good Boy to save. We shan't falter."
arven had the best arc in the entire game change my mind he really just wanted his mabostiff to get healthy and i literally shed a tear when it stood up
I’ll admit it, I found him quite annoying at first. But when he sent out his Mabostiff and explained his situation I was like “damn I’m the ass here.” 🥺
As someone with a dog who is slowly getting slower and weaker as her age is catching up to her, I related to Arven pretty quickly. I got teary eyed when I saw Mabosstiff regain his strength and pick up his pokeball. I didn't think mainline Pokémon could get me this emotionally invested, but here we are. Edit: June 24, 2023. She's gone now. I hope she knows I would have gone through a journey for Herba Mystica for her if I could.
After losing my dog earlier this year, I was not ready for what Arven's story had instore for me. I was in tears because everything he was said and did mirrored exactly what I was doing with my dog until she passed away. I was planning on finishing Path of Legends last, but after the second Titan, I gunned it to the end because I needed to know if Mabosstiff was going to be ok. Arven had it rough, but I was happy that he was able to save his friend.
Exact same thing here. My childhood dog passed away this past July and I could relate with Arven. I cried after learning why Arven was going after the Herba Mysticas. My dog couldn’t move in any way like Mabosstiff, but I’m just glad Mabosstiff got healthy in the end, it’s what I would’ve wanted with my dog. Sorry for your loss 🙂 I didn’t expect to like Arven at all, I thought he’d be my least favorite rival… but I love him and his story!
We all felt something familiar in Arven, I think. Some of us, a little. Others, a whole lot. I was preparing myself the whole time for an ending where Mabosstiff doesn't make it, not because it's an ending anyone wants or deserves, but because that's life. But then, that isn't a story for Pokémon to tell.
One detail I love about Mabosstiff is how the color of it’s hair matches the color of Arven’s hair. It’s supposed to represent how Mabosstiff has been a *better* parent to Arven than his actual parents.
@Voltify That only happened within the past few years though. Before that Arven was still basically ignored by his parent, they make that pretty clear.
@Voltify even before his parents abandoned him they barely even looked at him, there's a book where he's even referred to as "the boy" showing how little they cared for him. The professors were psychopaths that put their goal of breaking the timeline above all else. Even the ai modeled after every aspect themselves showed more humanity, as even a robot with 0 feelings could see the dangerous and inhumane acts the real professor's were committing, and the ai ultimately tried to put a stop to it.
Silver, N, Gladion and now Arven. Pokemon does seem to enjoy creating rival characters who are the abused children of the true antagonists of the game. Side note who do you think is the worst parent: Giovanni, Ghetsis, S&M Lusamine (they kinda butchered the character in USUM) or Sada/Turo.
Theres something about a theme being this cheerful and upbeat for such a tragic character that makes me emotional. A 'despite it all' theme for a 'despite it all' character
Outta all the characters in this gen. Arven is the one who managed to make me care. I really felt his sadness and frustration wanting to help his Mabosstiff. When he told the player his story. I immediately said "Screw the gyms! Screw team star! I don't even care what the professor wants! The only thing I want is to collect these herbs so Arven and Mabosstiff can be happy." I think for me, that was my treasure.
Dude that's exactly what I thought because the gyms are just pushovers anyway compared to helping mabostiff. And not to mention the other rivals (I guess the hacker counts to) have some sort of bland reason to just go around the whole region while arven gave me the drive to actually defeat the titans.
I had only just started playing Scarlet about a week prior when my dog of 16 years fell from the couch we were napping on, dislocated his hip, and lost mobility in his hind legs. He was very healthy for his age, only half-blind, but after two days spent taking him to different pet hospitals in a makeshift stretcher we had to accept that there wasn't anything we could do for him. Even though he was content to just lay next to us during that time, we knew we wouldn't be able to give him the constant care he now needed and laid him to rest. I've never been able to shake the feeling of responsibility; if I'd just been a little more attentive, I could've prevented the accident. He was such a loving friend, and constantly attached to my mother or me. We were his entire world, and he was ours, but in the blink of an eye, I lost my life-long companion and best, best friend. My mom and I were his world, and he was ours. I failed him as a caretaker and it cost him his life. Hate is a strong word, but I certainly didn't like Arven's character when I first saw him. I liked his cute queer-coded design, but I never really cared for the "annoying rival" trope and immediately dismissed him. That post-titan scene when his backstory was first revealed made me cry, but I still decided to watch the rest of scenes. The repeated, crushing reminders of heartache, guilt, and overwhelming despair; the explosive, then abating anger at having your world taken from you, over and over and over again... from a *Pokemon game*. I was bawling by the resolution. Though I did cry at N's farewell, no other Pokemon game has ever been able to elicit the same kind of emotions as this one has. Despite its obvious flaws, sv have become my favorite installments in the franchise to date (I had a hard time dethroning bw until the blueberry academy dlc gave us glorious unova music), and to me, this song will always be a reminder of why.
Anyone noticed how most of his team is related to food in some way? (Except Mabostiff) Toedscruel and Cloyster are both mushrooms and oysters. Scovillain and Garganacl are seasonings, pepper and salt. And then Greedent is a Pokémon famous for its greedy appetite. Truly a master chef Trainer.
@@larsthememelord3383 or a butler since butlers take care of a household/children when the parents are away/gone. Since Mabostiff is old fitting the old butler motif
Arven truly experienced the worst in this game. From his arc of trying to save/keep his Mabostiff healthy to everything we eventually figure out by the end of the game... this character really went THROUGH it and back. Arven is an outstanding character/rival/friend with a ton of depth and development throughout the game. His arcs nearly brought me to tears the most out of them all... And just like Nemona and Penny, I could not get his battle theme out of my head! This game really has some of the best/most indepth characters in any Pokemon game.
I feel like not enough people are actually appreciating how good this game actually is, all because gamefreak couldn't figure out how to actually optimize there game to run smoothly
@@basherblast sadly yeah, the game is overshadowed by the bugs and performance issues, but once they fix it, the game will definitely be top 5 Pokémon games of all tome
the little detail that i like the most is that arven and penny constantly fight in the dialogue when entering the area zero, but in the end penny is the one that goes and talks to arven after his parent's clone dies, showing at least some kind of small character development (something that pokemon games lack a lot of)
I hope the dlc will bring the other professor back to paldea and redeem themselves to arven by giving him a hug or something. Honestly this boy needs it.
Personally, I’d choose Arven as my favorite character. I didn’t like Nemona as much, mainly because she didn’t have much going on. However she’s alright. Penny is good, I liked her personality and she’s the most mature out of all the characters. However, Arven is the best by a long shot. He has a lot of development, and I think Game Freak intended to make him a fan favorite because damn, he has a lot of screentime.
I haven’t felt so attached to a rival since Wally, Arven has 100% earned his spot as one of my favorite rivals and characters, loved his character and his story really hit in the feels
@@tear959 the reason I like Wally is because he started off as a Sick shy kid that you help catch his first Pokémon because he is afraid from moving away to a place with better air to help with his health condition by himself. But as the story goes on he begins to follow in your footsteps, and goes on his own adventure around the region to earn all 8 gym badges to challenge the league and become the champion. At the end of Victory road, Wally waits for you and challenges you to a battle to show you that thanks to you he has finally been able to chase a dream of his own and that he is no longer the scared boy from before. You obviously beat him, but his growth from a sick nobody, to someone with one of the coolest ost and motivations makes him a amazing rival and friend
Arven skyrocketed as one of my favorite characters/rivals in this franchise. This is the first time in 9 gens that I didn't want to steamroll my rival. That final battle felt like a battle between 2 buddies and I loved every second of it. I spent most of it clicking irrelevant moves just to listen to the music and let him knock a few Pokemon out. I really like this character
I did the titans first because I wanted Mabosstif to be safe. And when I was going to battle Arven, he was 10 levels above me LMAO It took me 3 tries to beat him, it was fun
He was legit my first loss in the game, and I was sad I whited out. I was hoping an alternate end would play out for Arven’s sake. Felt he deserved it.
Arven's 2nd fight was one of my favorite fights in the Pokèmon series. Each Pokèmon being one you've already fought alongside, and the fact I actually had to go get stronger before fighting him was awesome. This fight was amazing
@@somethingbanter He was gonna do the same to me too until I Double Team scummed him with Mimkyu. (That mimikyu also got me through Great Tusk when I was 15 levels underleveled)
This fight was way more hype than the Nemona battle. Arven was actually with you every step of his journey instead of popping in and out, he fought alongside you against the titans and this was such a cathartic way for him to get out of his funk and prove that he's worthy of standing on his own. I think this is the first time I was actually proud of my rival instead of just being annoyed at their presence.
Literally almost cried cause I thought Mabosstiff was gonna die. Arven's story is so good. Tragic as hell, but on par with Lillie's story in terms of intenseness.
I don't think anyone expected Arven to have a tragic backstory / be kind of the jerk Rival because all the trailers showed him just being bad at battling and wanting the Herbs
@@snusey3642 Right? I started my fight against him and got completely destroyed. I realized I was gonna need to actually train to defeat him which was a first in a pokemon game for me. (I hadn't finished the League yet too)
when arven was first revealed i was legitimately like "pfft the cooking storyline is gonna be the least popular, i don't know if anyone will care about this guy" yeah well I CARE ABOUT THIS GUY he is so NICE and the way he calls the player character "LITTLE BUDDY" and his DOG making me BAWL MY EYEBALLS OUT and the whole story with his mom/dad making me want to give him the TIGHTEST hug that's ever been hugged he is SUCH A LIKEABLE CHARACTER and i LOVE HIM im so sorry arven for ever doubting you
In Spanish, while it isn't 100% the same, the second word is. "Especias ocultas" (HM's)/ "Maquinas ocultas" (HM's, the discs) And considering they could've just named them similar to english "Especias Misticas", the connection to HMs is quite definitely there
I love this fight so much. The fact that his entire team is the 5 pokemon he caught and assisted you with during his story + mabosstiff really made me feel attached to them.
This story absolutely broke my heart, and I loved it so much. Having a pet in such terrible health condition is something unfortunately close, so some of Arvens dialogue was heart wrenching. ‘Small bites’ is something I said almost exactly when my dog would eat in her last months, so that line particularly got to me. I’m so glad Arvens story had a happy ending, even though my boy still needs intensive therapy after that climax.
Well happy ending with mabosstiff but his parents is the sad part, one of them dead and the other abandoned him, i hope a good end in the DLC with his parents
before the treasure hunt begins, arven says “A treasure...of our very own... For me, that's got to be Ma- Er, my big dream of tracking down the Herba Mystica, that is!” the “ma” he cuts off obviously refers to his mabosstiff
So I got through all 5 titan challenges and professor Turo called us to Area Zero. Arven wanted to battle with me to make sure he is ready to face the dangers of Area Zero, at which point he whipped out his team, who is 10 levels higher than mine, and wiped my entire team before I could even damange his Scovillain. Scarlet and Violet is truly the dark souls of pokemon, I definitely do not have a skill issue, and this soundtrack bops.
My dog went through the same as Arven's Mabostiff. He was diagnosed with heartworm failure, and he was given 2 weeks for the medication he was prescribed to take effect. I think it was his sheer love for us that he managed to make it through because had that medicine not worked, we would have had to put him down. He has to take his medicine for life, but he has so much energy on him, despite him being over 10 years old. It's as if he's a pup again
@BingoBongus Arven actually attained Champion rank before the events of SV, there's a book in the academy documenting Champion rank trainers and Arven's name is there in black and white. For the record, Penny is also in that list.
I love how Arven's theme sounds like an adventure with ups and downs. There's hints of tragedy, anger and yet, tenderness that perfectly complement his personality and what he's fighting for as your rival. Like Gladion, he's outwardly rude and a bit of a smartass, but there's nothing they wouldn't do to help their friends
A serious comment now. Despite this game having pretty weak animations, they really handled Arven well. The body language in this man, damn. When we all think Mabosstiff isn't gonna come back and he turns away broken... only to realize his boi is bringing him the ball like the old times, and this poor man is so happy and shocked to finally see the only family he really ever had coming back he can barely stay still and contain his tears. I won't consider him a rival, more like a supporting character. Take JoBros in JoJo: the JoJo initially fights them out of a misunderstaing and then they slowly open up and become part of the group and a best friend to the protagonist.
@@cyberbitterdragon OH MY GOD YOUR RIGHT NOBODY WAS EVER THERE FOR KAKYOIN OR ARVEN AND KAKYOIN AND ARVEN BOTH ONLY EVER HAD ONE FRIEND, AND THAT FRIEND WASNT HUMAN (hierophant green for kakyoin, mabostiff for arven)

He quickly jumped from my favourite character of the game to my favourite character in all of Pokémon. His will to help his Mabosstiff, how happy he reacted once he saved it... it was just so heartwarming and nice to see for a character who had and has a rough time throughout his story. Truly a well written character
I went from "yeah, you're probably just another guy to bother me after every major battle" to "I will fight for you until the ends of the earth" so fast with this guy.
His life sucks, everything that could go wrong went wrong for him but even so he did not breakdown, not lose his smile, he continued to strive to protect those he love and find happiness
@@ominousangel7661 he’s an orphan now, but no one knew that until we as the protagonists went to his mother/father and found out they died. His mother/father is also like one of the most successful researchers ever in the Pokémon world/that region aren’t they? He also likely inherits that wealth since he’s the only person we know who could receive it.
I love how despite not having a "Role" of his own (In comparison to Nemona and Penny) he still ended up with the best story progression, even when compared to all the previous rivals. All he wanted was to save his pupper, that's enough for me to do his path first
Even if he hates it, he is still fundamentally the archetype of "The Professor's assistant". If he didn't have that background of research foisted upon him, he probably wouldn't be able to tackle the problem of knowing enough about the Herba Mystica. He just finally gave a purpose to that role.
I really think it's gonna be hard for another rival to top Arven when it comes to his uniqueness and how well he's written. I don't think there's been a single character in a Pokémon game that I've ugly cried over so much, and grown attached to like Arven. His reasoning for getting the Herba Mystica is so selfless and pure, he loves every single one of his Pokémon he met along the way, and he had such a horrible childhood. I'm seriously so miffed there wasn't an option, or at least a damn cutscene that showed your character giving Arven a big, long hug. Because he's one of those characters that desperately needs one. I adore him with all my heart, what an amazing character.
I like to imagine Arven watches cooking shows on his free time. He lays there with his Pokémon and his friends and watches Siebold freak out over raw food.
Me, meeting Arven: "Who the hell are you and WTF is your problem." Me, learning his problem: "BRO WHAT DO YOU NEED, I GOTCHU AND YOUR DOG LET'S FCKIN GOOOOOOOO"
I love how at 0:27 sounds a bit sad, melancholic. Shows how his parents were mostly never there for him, and he's only got Mabostiff to keep him company.
Just finished the main story and OH MY GOD I wanna give Arven a hug so badly 😭😭✨✨The fact that he's probably such a good cook because he didn't have parents there to cook for him, and him trying to cook up recipes for his Mabosstiff. He's been through a lot and the lengths he went to to help Mabosstiff get better because he was the only one that was there for him when his mom/dad should've been. But the way he was able to cope with it shows how strong of a person he is and I just loved seeing more to his character as the game progressed. Not to mention how he ended up befriending all the Pokémon he had initially just caught to help battle the Titan Pokémon. The ending made me cry. He (and Penny too) are really amazing characters.
Real talk this man is my new favorite character in the series. He goes through so much and I love his story. I can’t wait to see more of him in the inevitable dlc
It was so fulfilling seeing his Mabosstiff come out to battle you after spending the entire Titans arc essentially crippled and near-lifeless. Never was my heart made all fuzzy by a freaking Slasher Smile. And then I proceeded to down that goodest of bois in one hit from my Pawmot's Close Combat.
It's no surprise to me that the three missing coaches on the Blueberry Academy's League Club Room's computer are most likely going to be Nemona, Arven, and Penny.
After the second titan i was planning on going to fight team star but my boy was just too happy when Mabostiff opened his eyes i had to help him as soon as possible.
This music is really good. Seeing how Arven slowly open up to the player about what happened to him and Mabosstiff over the course of his arc is great character development. I felt bad for fainting his Mabosstiff in the battle tbh.
Easily one of the most tragic characters ever written, and one of the best designed in the entire franchise. A hair that covers his face indicating he's up to something, progressively opening himself to us, a foreshadowing to his team, a backstory that slowly starts making sense, in a version of a Pokemon game that strongly incentivates the player to be friendly towards his Pokemon HG/SS style, makes Arven the pinnacle of Pokemon trainer design
The most amazing thing about this amazing character is that even if he suffered A LOT he still stays strong for his friend and partner. But at the end, he realises he is not alone. He could save Mabosstiff and made some friends. He is one of my favourite characters in the entire franchise and I just want him to be happy
Arguably one of the saddest back stories in all of Pokemon when it's all said and done. I actually felt for him at the end of the game, with my personal connection to my Mom and my choice being scarlet the ending just hit so much closer to home than I was ready for. What an absolutely amazing character.
Him and N are characters I just wanna give a massive fricken hug to. Like throughout I was just so sad for Arven (which is why I did the herb storyline first). Because I know what it's like to be helpless with a sick pet.... and I also relate to him on a different level when it comes to family (not 100% but I've somewhat been where he's been). GOD POOR FRICKEN ARVEN!!
Watching Arven give his Mabostiff that last sandwich was the first time a pokemon game made me cry. I had cried over other video games before, but after sword and shield I never would have expected the absolute gut punch that was Arven’s quest line.
Poor Arven went through so much, from watching his best friend slowly wither away, never having a true other friend, and finding out the parent he almost never seen had died, he went through so much. I’m happy Mabosstiff came back, cause that was pretty much all Arven had. I absolutely loved the game’s story, but I was not expecting it to get so serious with some parts. From extreme bullying, to someone who lost nearly everything, it was surprising dark. But finding out the professor was dead was honestly something that made me recoil when I heard it. Again, these games were really good and I did like those part, just not something I expected lol
First encounter: "Oh, he's gonna be very annoying I guess." First time hearing the story with Mabosstiff: "He's a really good guy. I like him." The professors are actually dead and he's hearing that from their KI: "Someone please give him a hug. He really needs it." He's truly a tragic character because of his childhood only sharing with one Pokemon.
I felt for this dude. From the campaign to the endgame you just want something good for this guy to happen. Here’s to a DLC campaign to make sure he gets a happy ending.
Arven is by far the only Pokemon rival I actually felt sorry for. He goes through all the trouble to get all the Herba Mystica to cure his dog, and has to endure the fact that his mother/father died years ago, and has to watch their robot gets sent to the past/future, which is the last time he'll ever see his mother/father again Also I like how Koraidon/Miraidon is bopping their head during the first fight with Arven
Knowing how much he suffered, makes the fact that he’s successful on saving his big gray dog, feels even better. He at least can have a close ally or family member that he’s able to keep having at his side.
Bro DESTROYED my team first time I did the rematch. Then I finished up the rest of the stories and came back, and man this was one of the most fun battles in the whole game. Also wow it hurt to beat up his dog right after saving it lol.
People calling him rival But i think he was a friend only Not "friendly rival" Cuz he only wanted his doggo to be better We only had two battles with him within the story range Not counting any extra manual battles
I love just how… wholesome this theme feels. Same with Nemona’s theme, but it’s refreshing to have this in such an endgame battle, especially so close to the tonal shift that is Area Zero. Kinda similar with Hop’s champion cup theme, but that one also has an epic “this one’s for all the marbles” tone to it.

My game took like 30 seconds to load out of the black screen so I legit thought he did die after eating the last herb.
At the start: "Hmm, not sure I like Arven."
After the 2nd Titan:
Arven: "So, now you know why I have to do this. I have t-Where are you going?"

he really just wanted his mabostiff to get healthy and i literally shed a tear when it stood up
I’ll admit it, I found him quite annoying at first. But when he sent out his Mabostiff and explained his situation I was like “damn I’m the ass here.” 🥺
and the climax makes his arc even better and tragic, loved his storyline, such a great character :3

In the entire series. Bro’s life was shit
You're not alone though je died naturally in my arms outside with no injection in 2019 June 28.
Your dog just need some herba mystica and she will be fine
Same, but with my cat. This was not the first time I shed a tear from a Pokemon game, but it felt like it.
Sorry for your loss, hope you're doing alright
Oh, sorry, hope you're doing well, I know how it feels to lose a dog😢
Sorry for your loss 🙂
I didn’t expect to like Arven at all, I thought he’d be my least favorite rival… but I love him and his story!
Exactly the same at first I thought he was a bad character and felt terrible for criticizing him
I lost two dogs and there were 3 dogs in this game that reminded me of them
This gen was made for me, it's crazy
We all felt something familiar in Arven, I think.
Some of us, a little. Others, a whole lot.
I was preparing myself the whole time for an ending where Mabosstiff doesn't make it, not because it's an ending anyone wants or deserves, but because that's life.
But then, that isn't a story for Pokémon to tell.
Bro your gonna make cry on the train ride home
@@basherblast well said
Silver, N, Gladion and now Arven. Pokemon does seem to enjoy creating rival characters who are the abused children of the true antagonists of the game.

Outta all the characters in this gen. Arven is the one who managed to make me care. I really felt his sadness and frustration wanting to help his Mabosstiff. When he told the player his story. I immediately said "Screw the gyms! Screw team star! I don't even care what the professor wants! The only thing I want is to collect these herbs so Arven and Mabosstiff can be happy." I had only just started playing Scarlet about a week prior when my dog of 16 years fell from the couch we were napping on, dislocated his hip, and lost mobility in his hind legs.
First encounter: "Oh, he's gonna be very annoying I guess."
First time hearing the story with Mabosstiff: "He's a really good guy. I like him."
The professors are actually dead and he's hearing that from their KI: "Someone please give him a hug. He really needs it."
He's truly a tragic character because of his childhood only sharing with one Pokemon.
"Florian, we need to cook."
I felt for this dude. From the campaign to the endgame you just want something good for this guy to happen. Here’s to a DLC campaign to make sure he gets a happy ending.
I love how most of the percussion sounds like its coming from kitchen utensils. Such a good theme!!
Arven is by far the only Pokemon rival I actually felt sorry for. He goes through all the trouble to get all the Herba Mystica to cure his dog, and has to endure the fact that his mother/father died years ago, and has to watch their robot gets sent to the past/future, which is the last time he'll ever see his mother/father again
Also I like how Koraidon/Miraidon is bopping their head during the first fight with Arven
Knowing how much he suffered, makes the fact that he’s successful on saving his big gray dog, feels even better. He at least can have a close ally or family member that he’s able to keep having at his side.
Love how the theme has both the bongos and synthy beeps to allude to his connection to Sada/Turo, Area Zero, and the 'raidons.
Can we talk about how this man casually flexes a shiny fletchling
He protect, he attack, but most importantly he makes his dog a healing snack.
Bro DESTROYED my team first time I did the rematch. Then I finished up the rest of the stories and came back, and man this was one of the most fun battles in the whole game. Also wow it hurt to beat up his dog right after saving it lol.
People calling him rival
But i think he was a friend only
Not "friendly rival"
Cuz he only wanted his doggo to be better
We only had two battles with him within the story range
Not counting any extra manual battles
Such a cute story, really love how we got three different stories in one, and this one was my favorite! :)
0:52 i don't know why I like this part of the music is so good and arven is best character for me. He gives me bede vibe.
That part of the song gives me Sun & Moon vibes
Bede? No way... Maybe uhmm... Green/Barry? Even if they are like extreme opposites lmao
Edit: Green/Blue, Oak's grandson
Oh shit I mean peony I name wrong the character. 😂
Now That you mentioned it his hair looks like Bede's
@@saldziakrauje It sounds like super sonic racing to me
Arven's story is the saddest ive seen a rival have :.v
Arven's story is the best story in Scarlet and Violet, no all of Pokemon
And possibly (one of) the darkest and saddest story. Maybe that’s why it’s so good.
Arven was easily my favourite character in this game. I wanted to give the guy a hug so badly and hate my player character for not giving him one
I love just how… wholesome this theme feels. Same with Nemona’s theme, but it’s refreshing to have this in such an endgame battle, especially so close to the tonal shift that is Area Zero. Kinda similar with Hop’s champion cup theme, but that one also has an epic “this one’s for all the marbles” tone to it.
the part starting at 1:28 is my fav!!! btw arven is literally one of the best characters in the entire franchise i love him so much ahhh
