Someone that not only cares but actually connects with his products and customers. That's bananas! Very admirable.
I woke up on this beautiful Monday morning in Austin, Texas and was scanning depressing news on my iPad. Then, I checked in on your RUclips channel and watched this segment. It put me at ease and really re-shaped my attitude for the day. I don’t own any of John’s speakers. (My main speakers are actually Cornwall IVs.) I have heard Devore speakers and they are amazing! I have just never pulled the trigger on purchasing a pair. A pair of Orangutans are on my wish list. The pictures that John shared encompassed all that I feel when I am in my listening room. Truly personal space surrounded by my records and all of the equipment I have collected since becoming a “system nut” in the late 1970’s - combined with personal touches that make a house a home. Thank you, Steve, for making my day and probably my week! You are a true ambassador for the hobby and I love your work.
I live in Austin too and love this channel. I heard Devore Nines at Whetstone once with a Luxman integrated and vowed to get that system one day.
@@DaveSchulze I live n of Austin up in Killeen...and I l heard the small Gibbon 3XLs at Whetstone a few years ago. Never purchased but def a fan of Devore.
@@DaveSchulze - I auditioned them at Whetstone as well. I came close to selling my Ducati to buy a pair.
All Austinite Audiophiliacs chime in! NE Austin!
@@keplermission4947 - I'm sorry but, am I missing something here?
Hello Steve. The californian with thousands of records is Zach Cowie. He's a soundtrack consultant for great TV shows and films and he was friends with Art Dudley. He would be a great interview for your channel. There interviews online with him, but surely you would give a nice overview of his Hi Fi adventures
Happy to see this ephisode, loved it.
T-Shirt star iFi is my cat. My cats loves music. Especially iFi sits in the sweet spot and won't give her place to other cats.
John makes lovely loudspeakers...
Hello Hakan! Hello Ifi!
This is amazing! The sheer quantity of LPs in these photos is hard to wrap your head around. Devore makes The most beautiful speakers ever. As a woodworker, I just adore looking at them. Haven’t got to any parts about how they sound, and I’m curious if they are designed to work well placed pretty much against the front wall. I don’t care. The photos of these systems and the beauty of the speakers is pure Eye candy for someone who loves design. And as a woodworker, I think I can say we love beautiful and functional columns and monolithic towers of wood. And oh! John does explain that it starts with the architect or designer’s priorities, and the sound of the speakers in the room must be tailored to accommodate. Thank God it finally gets to some dogs. They’re great. Cats, not so much. But that can be forgiven since this is such a great visit. Thx!
Checks all the boxes!
I truly dig catching a glimpse of listening rooms more than anything... There's that.
Then, it's delivered by Mr Devore, in his own fascinatingly eclectic, warmly illuminated space, all brought to us by Steve.
Damn, ... this is simply a box checking monster!
Love the old pencil sharpener! John always comes off as a great guy. Thanks for this content Steve
I so agree with John...seeing the room and the some of the life of the person who owns the gear. It's always the best part to me. Great video Steve....more, more more in home / on location video's showing exactly what John talks about!
John has a wonderful room, and spectacular gear...ESPECIALLY the pencil sharpener. Takes me back to Sister Paul's home room, 1958. WOW! Thanks for the memories.
So cool to get to know John. I first saw his Orangutans at an audio show in Toronto. It was the most stand out room at the show for me. The system was producing real natural music. A small tube amp and a turntable. They spent money on a suite so it was in a good sized room and it sounded great. I thought at the time that this was done by a company that gets high fidelity sound. Now meeting John through your channel it is great to see that a great guy who cares is behind this great piece of audio art.
Devore makes lovely loudspeakers.
Great video, Steve and John!
He’s so happy and full of love for his babies. “Products” made by real people have a life and soul of their own that is priceless.
Beautiful speakers and beautiful rooms!
I've got the same sunshine condition as the photo at 6:57 and I eventually ended up with a lot of faded album cover spines. Didn't break my heart but if you're fussy about your sleeves, it's something to consider.
Looks like your whole room is fit out with Lundia shelving systems. Lundia is sooo nice. I'm using Lundia for my books and CDs but cheaped out with Ikea and metal shelving for my LPs. Lundia for my LPs would cost about $4K.
Your T-shirt kitty looks like a short-haired version of RUclips star Owl Kitty.
@@keplermission4947 My peasant neighbors are very impressed. We're all happy.
John is class. His speakers are what one could take to ride into the sunset.
@@keplermission4947 imo of course
Steve, great video. John is a cool guy. Just to clarify, the bar with the 0/93 speakers is Bar Shiru in Oakland, not San Francisco. Been there a couple of times and it is nice place. Japanese whisky and jazz.
Thanks GN!
Great video! My Gibbon Super Nines have a great home out here in Western Mass. An no TV!
He’s obviously getting something right as these speakers are loved by many. Sad it costs so much to get what I’d want from them.
John is a combination of cool and class
What a great video Steve! John comes across as such a great guy. Very approachable, passionate and thoughtful. Thanks for sharing this video!
Nice video Steve, I love it when you get out in the jungle and do a road trip speaking to very interesting designers. I enjoyed this one👍
Thanks!

Like paintings!! Every speaker, like every painting, has a home. ❤
Love seeing others' listening rooms!
Hey Steve this was fantastic. I love your interview segments. The was no need for a Viewer System of the Day because John provided us with some beautiful systems. John’s speakers are a true work of art.
A buddy of mine has a beautiful pair of Devore speakers being run by a stunning and rare old Fi amplifier. Amazing sounding system. Man, a bar with Devore speakers in it? Awesome…. Thanks John and Steve!
That bar was a place I would visit for sure
@@scottyo64 Hey, Scotty! No doubt, I’d love to go to a bar or restaurant with good sound, as it’s often just dreadful. lol
.....and then, there's that final commode photo 😆
Love the GE vacuum tube box and the old school pencil sharpener in the background.
lov luv love live best Audio-feely-ak vid ever
Thanks Herb! By the way there’s a Herb video coming up soon!
The bar is Bar Shiru in Oakland. I’ve been there but couldn’t really hear the DeVores because the main system is Line Magnetic horns
Nice interview with an untimely ending.
Enjoyed the customer homes featured.
Could have run into a pt2!
John: Do you have a Brit export "Funky Gibbon" model in the works?
(Might be a Goodie)
🎶😉🎶
There is a part two with John, but not more pictures of systems. But more stuff with John
I love this so much! I am a recent owner of DeVore’s O/96 and I’m over the moon happy with them. I think I’ll email John a photo today.....
@skyg blue Simaudio Moon 600i v2 with 680D DAC/streamer
1:30 That is the most vivid stero image of a piano sound! Great speakers! You can even pinpoint (extremely clearly) exactly where the piano is between the speakers. Great blending of the two speaker's sound that seems so much like coming from a single point in between the speakers (but really is coming from the two speakers). Great illusion!
Hi Steve
Love all the channel content ! ✌
Great pics. I also like the two very nice vintage Yamaha's (CR 1000 and CA800? ) beside John. And wow what a collection of vinyl.
CR-1000 and CA-1000, thank you!
Great interview and inspiring customer systems. Thanks Steve and John Awesome 👏
Thank you for this viewing episode. Love the systems and cats. When I see these systems I often wonder where do they get there shelving ?Keep up the good work, Steve Guttenberg.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Yes! Yes! Sound systems are meant for the whole of the home. Completely agree.
If I recall correctly, that award winning home was featured on the “Grand Design” British TV show.
Lastly, I love the sense of humor using primate references for the speakers. Are howlers too far behind? Lol!
Absolutely brilliant love it 😊
Ha, I sold that client his Gibbon X's and the rest of his system in the Wedge house! Cool guy.
Thanks Neil!
Thank you very much. John is such a nice guy.
Brilliant! I loved this, Steve!
Steve, any chance for a review on the new Devore O Baby speakers soon? As a happily married Devore owner, I have to say that they sound fantastic, but almost more importantly, the wife acceptance factor is off the charts. Mine sit proudly in my living room, too.
Lovely-looking speakers in lovely rooms, all of which appeared unsullied by acoustic treatments of any kind. I guess that's because John is a stylish guy and he chose the photos for visual appeal. They are clearly popular and serious speakers, so I wonder how many of John's customers have room problems like the rest of us! Anyone care to comment or reply?
Love this video, well done Steve and John. Steve, please do this with more manufacturers! Sean Casey, perhaps?
Years of scientific research - ok, not really - have proven that for every piece of audio gear damaged by a dog, there are 468 damaged by a cat. As an audio repair tech with 44 years experience, I can remember lots of pieces damaged or destroyed by cats, but only one by a dog, and it was a puppy chewing on speaker wires during its teething phase.
Enjoyed this.Thanks.☺
Check out the Wedge house John mentions in Season 5 Episode 3 of Grand Designs New Zealand.
Fun but kind of hoped we'd get a glimpse at his new smaller offerings
I did that will post in a month or so
Great video gentlemen!
Love love LOVE John and his wonderful designs.
Thx Steve, love this stuff… please keep it coming!
A few years ago I wrote a letter to Stereophile (I’m a long time subscriber) requesting more pics of systems… either the writer/reviewers and/or the readers…but mostly the reviewers systems. Never heard back :)
Fortunately guys like you and others are happy to share online so I now get more than my fix of stereo-porn.
Cheers, R
Many years ago we had a kitten who attempted to CLIMB up one of my Snell C IV's via the grille material. She only attempted that _once_.
Love love love this episode!!!
Very enjoyable interview.
A very feelgood vibe in this one and cool to hang out with you guys for a bit. I strive to own a pair of DeVore speakers some day and be able to send John another picture 😃 Good one Steve !
Toilet, bin and stereophile magazines. Class! :)
It seems when people buy DeVore speakers they get that urge to collect lots of records. Next thing they want is more records 😊
Hey, I think I saw my old Yamaha CA-800 on the shelf behind Mr. DeVore. Also the acoustics of the room in the very last photo are great for singing along. Insert TP joke here.
Always like listening to John DeVore. Thanks, Steve. One more thing: You should invest in a decent wireless lavalier mic system.
This video was like fine art, in the best sense of the expression! God bless you and your loved ones, Steve!
Great vid! ✌
I agree with the idea that sound gear may be placed in living areas of family`s houses, music should not be restrained to especific areas. Sorry for my english, it is not my first language. Nice job!
The New Zealand photo house you can see on Grand design Nes Zealand.
John, we do not have any dealer/showroom in Switzerland and I want a pair of Gibbon, please do something :-)
wow it's like a Portlandia episode
Your next speaker series needs to be named Bonobos; they are primates that use sex as a way to develop relationships and to resolve conflicts!
What a funny video. I love to see stereo systems
How that woofer eyed cat listens and processes those SINe sound waves that enter his ears and then how he compares them to that fidelity on high information, or logos, he's heard before , which resonated within his whole being and had a positive impact (in his heart and mind, that all in this group are called to find and should have , by THE WAY) is what really matters , since that will make it a WIN-WIN situation for all, and certainly not so much the evolution pollution collusion , nor the eyes per se . Please Steve, just let your proud Devore speaker friend, at it for 20 years (?) know this Truth Two ...Shema!!!
Is that old Yamaha gear on the shelf behind him?
Replace the dam TV !!! Thumbs up for DeVore
I love it!
I love Iffy.
7:00
That "beautiful light coming in" =faded/sun damaged album covers pretty quick
That said, I do have a large CD shelf unit next to a window in the living room due to waf, and just live with fading on one edge of the jewel case tray insert label
I want to get into records. I'm just lost on what the parts are where one can DRIVE down cost, but at the same time not compromise on sound. VERY hard to do with records to me.
Fluance RT84
Good dude
Steve , are you the same Steve Gutenberg who produced the chesky listening demo disc ? I ordered it from Amazon Anyway 😀
Yes that’s me! Actually, I did quite a few for the label.
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac nice !! I’ve been going thru the chesky artist list …love it…Casey abrams is awesome, I like bossa nova and found Ana Caram …btw how do you play their WAV download without a computer ? But they all on streaming anyway
That O/96 is a real looker. Too bad it retails over $12k. Why hasn't anyone else built a knock off for far far less? I could then get me one.
Try 0/93🙂
Vote 1 PEPSI? Some truly inviting pictures.
Cat people are the best
( :^)
One of those pairs were shoved up right against the wall. Poor speakers. They can't be happy.
I don't think Steve is an animal person...he sounds bored by the animal stuff.
For those interested in seeing the build of that award winning home: ruclips.net/video/2E_eijko2Rk/видео.html
Very cool!
does he make an active?
The uber expensive Reference has active woofers.
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac How uber is uber? Over 100k?
Oh Steve ...the perennial seeker for Fidelity on High, who HOPEfully one day will listen to the Designer for good, with his proud Devore speaker friend, at it for 20 years...? And does the woofer eyed cat howl when music is played , like some dogs might? Doubt it though...
But aren't cats ,dogs, monkeys and even the rain , God's own? They just need to be fed the right food as in perhaps a little of Pedigree, Well Core and Royal Canin, Steve and company included . Just kidding...Talk about Devore fidelity , eh Steve? ...Shema my friend!!!
I was saving up for a pair of your entry level speakers to replace my Bowers and Wilkins 607. Cancer hit so that's not in the picture anymore use the money to help pay for medical costs maybe one day
There's a very good reason music lovers prefer cats: they're much less time consuming than dogs and they're independent. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs. The problem is they are very needy and time consuming; robbing the music lover of time that would be better spent listening to music. Also, remember what that Dogue de Bordeaux did to Tom Hanks' stereo and records in Turner and Hooch? Those woofers were toast!
But cats have potential to F up speakers bigtime.
@@ryanschipp8513 That is also very true and my own cat once planted himself on a rotating platter. Not cool... How the stylus didn't get damaged, I'll never know. It was an Ortofon 2M Bronze at that, so I would have been very upset.
@@revokdaryl1 oh boy! Thankfully no damage
@@ryanschipp8513 The record I was playing did sustain a bit of damage, but the turntable, stylus and tonearm were okay somehow. The record was still playable. I got very lucky. After that episode, he was locked out of the music room during listening sessions.
@@revokdaryl1 bad kitty!:)
Imho, UGLY speakers. Very plain looking.
Yeah, I thought so too - until I saw them in the flesh. They really do look like beautiful mid-century modern furniture. And they sound even more beautiful. End-game speakers for people who are done with the hifi merry-go-round and just want to enjoy the music. The Audiophiliac would probably stop making videos if he bought a pair :)
