Mega Man 4, released in January of 1992, finds the Blue Bomber going up against Dr. Cossack, a mysterious scientist behind the latest attack by eight robots. Of course, it's really Dr. Wily again. This installment saw the first appearance of Eddie, commonly known as Flip-Top, a mostly useless source of random powerups. Source: speeddemosarchive.com/MegaMan4...
For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.

I have a new found respect for announcers that know how to pick their spots
Most obtrusive announcer ever. Nice run though.
"you can interrupt me whenever you want to talk Duckfist"
immediately interrupts him lol... that made me so happy.
wow the announcer just KEEPS GOING
Dear God... This announcer makes this run a hell to watch. Way to ruin a Duckfist run
+Tonyant1998 like cool that people are donating, but I want to hear the strats and what's going on.
The donations used to be read when literally no one had anything to say.. It was filler. Now they seem to think it means more than the commentary? You see the runners wanting to/about to say something and they don't. Why? Because you literally have to force the donation readers to be quiet. When did this start? And why? And why for the love of god don't they just have scrolling text showing the donations? Why does it need to be read aloud in the first place?..
To the reader's credit, he DID ask before reading them off.
To be fair, the donations DO mean more than the commentary. The commentary is interesting, but the charity is the reason everyone is there. Having their donations and remarks read aloud undoubtedly encourages people to donate to be 'stars' for a minute. The text idea isn't a bad one, but the display is already pretty crowded; look at any run with chat or text loaded and you can barely see anything. The runner/reader SHOULD have better rapport than they do here, where they're tripping over each other, but hearing people's stories about battling illness is more important here than why the runner didn't use Weapon Z on Boss X.
I'm sure full game commentaries are available on the runner's Twitch channel.
JoeyRottenwood See I disagree as far as that within the stream, the commentary does mean more than the donations, if only because the donations would not be happening without the stream occurring, and thus the commentary. This isn't meant to sound harsh, and I'm sure many of us would have donated regardless because it's a good cause, but I'm sure there are many who only donated because they were being entertained and you think to yourself that giving a small donation is a good price for all the free entertainment you got. From that standpoint then I agree with the original poster. Not that the donations aren't important, but people watching do so to see the skill, and as a great added bonus to hear the why and how of a speedrunner's thinking.
FreeCorps You aren't being harsh; you make excellent points in a rational manner rarely seen on RUclips.
I guess my line of thinking is that the runners' speed-running strategies are all over their normal Twitch channels and RUclips posts, and most runner 'strats' are identical in the digital age. I'm sure these events draw in more casual fans and therefore the speed run commentary is more useful than normal, but as with anything, those who really care won't mind doing a little digging.
Just as a viewer, the donation reads make it feel more like a large communal event and less like 20 good-natured guys on a sofa playing Super Metroid.
JoeyRottenwood Thanks man, and you as well. Are we sure this is youtube comments?
I agree in that their strats are indeed all over their channels, although in many ways this is a more casual setting in which you get to hear the how or why a type of strat is used. I thought the Super Metroid run was a good example. The 4 runners were pretty much identical, although the commentator did a good job of pointing out minute differences and how strats had been discovered. That's another thing I like about the commentary from the runners themselves, many times they'll reference another player and how a strat came about, and why they might play it safe at certain parts. Many times on their regular channels if their going for a record or practicing a certain new strat all you get is silence because they're trying to be perfect. You are right though, those who do care, either because they are fans or because they're practicing their own runs, will definitely do a bit of digging if they see something new, commentary or no.
In any case the event is wonderful and I think it's amazing how much money they raised. It also blows the argument that people sometimes raise about not being able to give much right out of the water. Many of the donations were $5 here and $10 there. It definitely added up at the end.
Fuck this donation reading is dominating the entire speed run! Protip: dont let the donation reading be the entire audio of the speedrun
I LOVE the way Duckfist smacks the buttons on the controller.
my dad was diagnosed with liver cancer. Hes been fighting it for about a year and hes kicking its ass! If i can catch one of your live streams i'll be happy to donate!
Holy shit this announcer just basically talked 24/7. Take a breath ffs. Never have him again. Also he's talking over the speed runner.
Duckfist totally wrecked this run. Cossack 2 was incredible. Good stuff!
Is there any way to watch this run, or watch duckfist do this run at another event, so I don't have to listen to the donation announcer yelling out everything over the game? I'd really like to watch the run while listening to what the RUNNER has to say. If there are any links, I'd love to have them
I always enjoy your runs, Duckfist!
Well done! This was the certainly the most difficult Megaman game for me.
Why do they have to get that damn guy on the microphoneeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Wiping the sweat from your hands on your jeans between levels. Classic gaming technique! Love it! Well done!
Great run, Duckfist!
You are godlike, duckfist. Keep the good work :)
34:12 hmmm the guy with comments is talking too much. You must to replace him for this job next time.
kevindoc84 That was AGDQ2013. They improved so much since then, don't worry.
When people like duckfist and trihex get on, the contrast between the other attendees really shows how socially awkward everyone else is.
22:30 My favorite comment from this run XD
SonicGamesPlayer Down with WaWii?
I remember farming the E tank on Skull Man's stage (19:06) as a kid - I fell in that damned hole getting to it SO many times!
worst donation reader ever
The reason that virtual console and emulators in general have lag is that they match the hardware, and hence it's timing, exactly. It doesn't matter that your CPU is more powerful, because they are matching the NES on the instruction level. If you want to make the games smoother you need to port the game onto different hardware, such as in the anniversary collection.
+James Norton It still would have been nice if Nintendo bothered including an option to exclude the traditional lag. I know it belongs in the emulation and that's how the games were, but still I'd opt for lagless play. Wii would've been certainly capable of doing it.
I never experienced any lag on my NES emulators. I experienced tremendous lag on the Megaman Anniversary Collection for the PS2. The lag was so bad, I couldn't even pass the Quickman stage, but could do so easily on the NES on an the emulator. Go figure.
The nes emulator might have been overclocked?
As soon as it started and I heard who was announcing, I immediately went to find another run to watch without him. Never let this guy read donations ever again.
Fun Fact: It's not called Bright Stopper even though it is gotten from Bright Man. It is actually **Flash** Stopper. Isn't Flash Man a taken name? Yes, but he gives the **Time** Stopper.
+Alvis Ng And to add to the confusion, Time Man was an added boss in Powered Up on the PSP
Psine Wave what does time man have then…the STOP Stopper?
That Drill Man battle was absolutely atrocious having to listen to Duckfist, the runners beside him, and the donation reader all trying to talk over one another.
Holy shit, never let this announcer get near a mic ever again
They DON'T try to read them all. They filtered out a TON of them due to either time constraints or comments that are meant to just flame/troll.
The reason comments are read aloud is because it's MUCH more meaningful than an easily ignorable scrolling section, and that itself helps convince people to donate. If the runners need serious time, they get their serious time. I'm of the opinion that the system works just fine, though I understand where you're coming from.
Seeing and hearing all those nerds kinda spoils it for me. I don't wanna see nerds when I'm nerding out - it accentuates the fact that I'm nerding!
shady4091 Um, I think you missed the irony of my comment. I love watching these videos!
lol k. My bad.
5 robot masters in 13 minutes? Uncanny. This dude is Nasty capital N.
I want to believe no one told him you must read eveey single donation. But he told himself they paid so i will read it. "I never announced a speedrun before so i know i have to read these donations" please i get to speak and everyone listens to me and laughs at my charming wit."
Even if they shouldn't donate for that reason, if ego drives more money to the PCF, so be it. And this was on the absurdly far end of the bell curve when it comes to donation frequency. In addition, there's also the high amount of interactivity between the donors and the runners: "Put this to the runner's choice", "Can Blechy please stand up", "Why does this file name cause a glitch", etc.
The idea to read them over a certain dollar threshold is great! And if there´s a timehole to fill you can still read any comment fitting the situation since I like to hear the shoutouts! All in all you are already very well organized!!!
That a great idea, they could combine it. Really big donations would be read out, while the small would scroll across the bottom, they could even hide small messages :)
Why am I having such evil thoughts while watching this speedrun? (hint: the announcer guy)
Heck yeah, I've been playing some old school megaman games all week! I beat the first 5, and am gonna knock out the 6th one soon. I definitely am not a speed runner though. It takes me a few continues, but it feels good to complete a game in one sitting.
Best Run in Mega Man 4 :)
Very nice video ! And run ! And game too ^^
I (unfortunately) didn't know it yet but now, I definitively think Megaman will be one of my hero in the next Super smash bros !
I find it incredibly ironic that with Wily Fortress being primarily SKULLS, it took all the way until Mega Man 4 for Dr. Cossak to create Skull Man
LOL I didnt realize megaman speed-runners jumped at the end of a boss battle to reduce lag, I thought they were just doing a celebratory 'dance'.
Love the Pharaoh Shot hanging out in the corner after sliding to his death...
Convenience. More games can be played on the Wii's Virtual Console than an actual NES, so they use that to reduce the time to swap out consoles in between runs.
it's a good idea
The announcer is terrible. He talks over everyone. Turn his mic off.
Absolutely correct. The entire hardware of a console has to be emulated by the processor and graphics card. Just think about PCSX2. The original PS2 has a CPU that runs at 295 to 300MHz, depending on version. The emulator needs a CoreI7 to run without framedrops. That's at least 3,4GHz, four cores.
Kept waiting for the donations reader to say "I'm from Holland, isn't that VIERD!?"
Where the heck is the mute button for that guy's voice??? Really man, you need to practice a lot for the donation thing when you are talking, because its so rude that you interrupt the runner... Just saying, don't kill me :P cheers!
That one donation was so punny :)
Worst donation reader ever.
Just Awesome.
it adds a lot more of a personal feel if you read it out lowed, also you have to think about people who would troll the stream if they didn't have pre readers. They could do a scroll of the names tho with the amounts they donated.
For future AGDQs you should make the game footage bigger than the facecam bit.
That dam announcer........
Duckfist has beefed up since last year.
I can't watch this because of that damn announcer. This is early AGDQ I suppose so they iron that out later but still.
Its like a nice putt on the green when they clap!
Is Funkdoc going to be at SGDQ13? Please say yes, as his Castlevania/Batman runs are the highlight for me of any marathon...
run starts at 6:48
Run starts at 6:48
Is the trick where you kill Dr. Wily with Toad Man's Rain Flush not well known? To me, that was very intuitive, and I discovered it one of the first time I played it as a kid. I think that should count as completing the game, in a separate category, maybe :D
My left Ear enjoied it, my right One didnt
I don't know if they fixed it when they ported the game to Virtual Console, but I remember, at least on the cart I played the game on way back in the day, the boss at 43:20 is glitched where if you hit it with one Drill Bomb, it's hit box almost completely disappears. The only place it still has a hit box after you do that is around the green light you hit to damage it. You can get right behind it and hit the green light and don't have to worry about dodging anything he shoots out cause he can't shoot backwards.
Talk to Seanbud or other members of the budcrew that did TipoftheHats charity as they had a plug-in that would be perfect for you guys.
Had to mute the run and miss out on the music and commentary. Thanks interrupting announcer!
Frame by frame action only on Awesome Games Done Quick
Who in Monsteropolis keeps approving the permits for Dr. Wily's Skull Castles?
I'm guessing he builds them secretly somewhere. For example: Mega Man 8, Wily built the castle underground.
Either that's the loudest controller in the world or this guy is trying to break this thumb on the buttons
I agree with this as well. I think the pros outweigh the cons for this.
hey guys what state making this mettings
Just Wondering it you set up a live event like this why not use the actual NES copy and play on an NES??
Hah, he actually failed a boss there due to the announcer and his questions.
the ones who sits on the couch are the ones that runs the game being runned if that makes any sence...
Megan Man 4!!
Is he using one of those non standard controllers with the hard loud buttons?
I've seen some bad trolls, but you take the cake. Almost as bad as that marine copypasta.
I am with you I wish they just let the players talk.
What controller is used and on what platform is this?
looks like the classic controller for the nintendo wii
6:49 start
looks to be the wii classic pro
Starts at 6:45. :O!
Thats why you have someone moderate the comments.
what ascent does the reader have? I can't tell...
Why does it seem like the donation reader is competing with the runner and commentators? I do of course like hearing donation comments, but I think the game commentating should be in the forefront more often, especially in a game like Mega Man 4 with a ton of interesting little tricks that need to be pointed out.
what controller is he using?
I THOUGHT THAT WAS JAY CUTLER SITTING ON THE COUCH IN THE WHITE SWEATER!!!
Well, I'll stick up for mustache dude because I think you misunderstood his error. First I'll state an old nes game like this is only 300k so it can easily be stored in RAM, meaning the HD has nothing to do with speed. Also the cpu on the wii is more than capable of running an nes game perfectly. The only reason it couldn't would be the fault of a poorly implemented emulator. Mustache dude's mistake was he thought they'd removed the lag from the original game but they emulated it perfectly.
Dat donation reader.
Seven was the one that won.
How do they decide who gets to sit on the couch!!
Huh, I guess if you kill wily early it breaks the mega man universe by causing a paradox and locks the game.
Also it's far more dependent on yourr CPU rather than the graphics card, so it's no wonder than on weak processors like the Wii's there isn't any real improvement.
DEAR GOD PLEASE
where are AGDQs announced?
thought you guys only used original consoles
Woah pharaoh man first? I can never beat him without the flash stopper
AVGN would be happy!!!
Dude megaman is a really hard game on in itself so yea
oh thanks man not too familiar with the wii im pretty old school and dont own anything newer than a gamecube lol. that classic pro looks like a good controller though
Wii Classic Controller Pro.
