Most people that does not have a natural feel for rhythm, is missing out on the "Up" when dancing to Reggae oriented music. So they dance it like it was a hip hop groove going "down" on the major beats. That way they can not move freely within the reggae groove. So even if they start loose, like in this video, they will still have a hard time enjoying the gig over a longer period or even harder at e.g a Festival. What needs to be trained is the "Up" from the hips/neck (or wherever they rhythm center is most prominent in their body) going upwards on the majors or even on the off beats. If a person trains that for week or two listening to reggae genre music then the whole moving experience will change radically. Non natural dancers must simply force this movement till the body accept is as the basic movement of rhythm. Then the dance form can freely progress from that base. If one watch old Rastafaries or people from the roots of Reggae dancing, one can spot that they have this "up" - but sometimes it´s nearly no longer visible since their form has become free and personal. If the body can learn this form then the dance can be used for nearly all Reggae based music, from Roots over Dancehall to Dubstep and everything in between. Sorry but I think this video does not help much for learning how to dance to Dancehall. The only good thing is to tell people to go loosely, but still if their body don´t know where to go they end up awkwardly off the groove when feeling like they are dance warm.
These comments you made makes sense and I'd like to know more. I was trying to work out why people don't do hip hop dance to reggae and vice versa. I think you've answered that question.
Are you kidding me?!?!? alot of you guys come on here talkin bout dats not dancehall, maybe you should have read the title because it says 'basic steps' which is true because as a jamaican i can attest to the fact that when a dance/party jus start people are rockin before dem warm up, so if yuh dont know ntn dont say ntn. kmt
