Don't know if you know but theirs also a video from a Japanese youtuber in english you can find easily but it's more him explaining how Tyler uses 2-5-1 only so not sure if that helps but still, study material
I knew what it people meant when they talk about progressions with numbers but they way you showed it makes things alot more clear for me to understand. Thanks man. This helps ALOT
Ay bro I appreciate somebody actually going into some theory on these videos for once. A little 'short cut' that I use for vibey chords - take a 7th chord, either major, minor or dominant, and stack the thirds. So C, E, G and B for C major 7 for example. Take the first and third note and transpose them down an octave. This way you're left with a fifth between the C and the G (the root and fifth) and also a fifth between the E and B (the major third and major 7th). Add extension notes in to taste from there ;). You can also do things like avoid the third and seventh to add some tonal ambiguity. So if you had C and G in the left for example and then D and A in the right hand you'd maintain the quintal relationship but be targeting the 9th and 6th
@@selahYDT Yeah man, it gives you a nice open sound from the get go. From there you can go like 'I want some more crunch' an perhaps add in the 9th, so C and G in the left hand and then D, E and B in the right hand for example. Once start thinking about extensions (ie fourths, fifths, tritones etc) as much as the chords themself the possibilities really open up :) Feel free to hmu if you want to work on a track or something by the way. I play drum kit, guitar and piano myself and have some nice gear and stuff. Also doing my master's in music composition from September and will have 24/7 access to some dope studios :D I'm all over things like string writing especially, loooove that shit

ay bro when u put it down a semitone it stays inside the scale? that shit kinda confused me cuz im used to just following the ghost notes, could u give me any insight on that? great video btw, earned a subscriber
My bad for the late reply but the guy below me basically answered it it’s changing the key which people don’t do a lot but it sounds cool try playing around with it and see what you can make
thank you for explaining the music theory behind your process, it really helped give me a sense of direction and insight on what I should research further and made the process much more beginner friendly
@@selahyoudidthatur videos actually helped me out a lot cuz I got a concussion so I had to take a break from producing for a while.. getting back into it I absolutely sucked ass, but after rewatching all ur vids I finally feel like I’m back to being myself. so thanks dog
Theres a lot of different mechanics involved but really it all comes down to voice leading. When you play a chord you have an infinite amount of places to go. But to make it sound good and keep it from sounding dissonant it typically has to make sense. Has to be a reason for it. In this particular progression, your ear is already trained to hearing the downward trend of the pitches and notes so when any chords that seem out of place happen , they’re serving as passing chords to fulfill the trend of the melody. Of course theres more to it but honestly when you get on the keys and start making your own progressions this is what will take forefront in your head.
Bc its the same distances between notes pulled down (like octaves but not really). I dont think it would as sound good if both were playing at the same time though.
Most of the time when Tyler uses descending II-V-Is, he goes down two semitones instead of one, it sounds better imo and it also then follows the “rules” of music and modulations. Look at Boredoms first verse or GONE GONEs second part for what I mean. Great video!
Yeah it's basically a key change or a key switch Tyler uses them a lot but if your new to music theory it may be a little confusing I say just experiment in changing keys and see which ones go with each other and try that or use this method of putting it down a semi tone if you have a nice chord progression. Try some stuff and see what sounds good
@@selahyoudidthat I’m just new to like theory but I been producing for mad long, but like with the 808s and shit you would have tot totally change the key right?
bassline keys will always sound good if you use the root note of the chord you're playing. Let's say, I'm playing cmaj7 chord. C E G B right? I'd go an octave lower on the root note (first note, in this case C) to give it that bass and depth. Very simple inversion.

When you put down the chord progression It goes off c major key, why It still sounds good?
It's kind of like a key change. I don't know exactly how it works, but to me, it doesn't matter if the theory is proper as long as it sounds good
