- One inescapable aspect of modern life is that humans are constantly creating data. So as enterprise data booms, IBM Storage Flashsystem is empowering businesses by scaling them efficiently, by rethinking the way storage operates entirely.
This could've been an interesting video if IBM explains how the technology works rather than just spouting jargons. Maybe pay Vox to do a Vox style video of IBM instead of just having Vox display your video.
Exactly, well said.
Even with an ad blocker Vox finds a way to show ads
@vox
Wow, well said.
😑Without a real explanation, and only the vaguest gesture towards data and reports, this video amounts to something like:
"Trust us, we're saving the planet. No, you can't fact-check us." 🙄
I was shocked that Vox published this before I realized (honestly after much too long) to realize this is explicitly labeled as an ad 🤦♀️
it's on the video title. It isn't their fault if you thought something else
Still pretty shocking tbf
same
I know they need money as well but science shows should never use their trust for advertising technology or companies. It now looks like Vox really trusts and endorses IBM for their storage solutions and therefore the viewers may believe that as well now.
@@pjp13579It's ultimately my own responsibility. But I had this on autoplay so tbf I can't see the disclaimer with my ears.
At least they wrote in the title that it's an ad.
yeah people are forgetting journalism is dying, just look at Vice. Vox needs to make money somehow
They have ethics so they follow the law. And the law says that they have to be transparent, even if not everyone is/had been.
Disregarding that this is sponsored content, this was a pretty bad video. I'm a Software Engineer that specializes in storage devices and yet I can't figure out what's being sold here beyond an IBM service. Also Vox tends to go slow in explaining complicated stuff but this breezed through a lot of it. The guy in the video is talking as if the audience was fellow technologists but that's obviously not the case. They tried to make up for it by relating it to farms and crops but the analogy is pretty weak imo.
Exactly! That analogy made no sense. It didn't help me, as a total layman, to understand any of this better at all. Both grain storage and data storage need to be "efficient"? Great, *every* storage does!
@@MrMelkor98 Definitely felt like a "get it done" video by Vox rather than the others that had a lot more care put into it.
@@darexinfinity this video is not from vox, ibm payed them to host this video on their channel.
Agreed, this video is a bunch of jargon with little substance, and the guy didn’t explain anything well
@@svenolschewski2200 Perhaps, although it still makes Vox look bad for a lack of quality control.
A totally information-free video. Congratulations!
I don't see any issue with Vox producing content for companies to use as advertisements, but putting these ads on their channel alongside their other content calls the validity of all that content into question.
it was explicitly labeled an ad
@@zumabbarLeave it to these people to click on a vid without reading the title, only to be angry.
Even if this was an ad, It didn’t feel like vox video… honestly, I think I’m might contribute to vox so they can stay as independent as possible, because this wasn’t it…
It doesn't feel like a vox video because it is an ad. I think it's completely made by IBM from what the label says in the top right "advertiser content from IBM"
If I was financially stable enough to contribute to them, I 100% would, their normal videos are great
i agree. this video was terrible
I urge more people to donate, if comfortable. Clearly they didn’t get enough from their drive and are trying to generate money off of ads rather than put up a paywall.
Why is Vox literally uploading ads to their RUclips channel?
Because they don't have enough funds
Does the solution involve laying off old employees so they won't get retirement benefits?
Probably, companies this large don't treat their employees like human beings. We shouldn't allow giant monopolies like IBM to exist.
@@crowonthepowerlinesIBM is FAR from a monopoly. There’s competition with every single space they’re in.
thanks for bringing transparent, i hope you can make enough to be fully independent.
I don't think the whole "grain metaphor" really worked.
Like, you put up some neat visuals that *implied* a connection, but besides both grain and data storage needing to be "efficient", there wasn't really any connection. And I think you can say about *any* kind of storage that it needs to be "efficient". So yeah, I didn't really see the point.
Agreed. Its was nonsensical. I kept watching thinking it was going to connect but it never did.
I appreciate that the ad is labeled in the title. But do ads really need to be their own videos?
They are trying to teach you something. Not just advertise, but inform.
The ad would have been more effective if they also talk about how they did their buzzwords.
And most important: how did the rounded grain silo change everything?
I don't mind the advertisement video but they could have written it like a vox video with proper explanation on what the product is
The best part of the video is the explicit text saying this is basically an ad from IBM. Nice to see actual transparancy
The increased advertiser content shows how this channel is circling the drain. Very concerning
How can you begrudge someone for earning a living? It is not like they are are adverting lead paint 😒
Concerning? It's labeled.
It’s not circling the drain, just looking to continue providing a platform for its employees. If you like vox but don’t like the ad content, you can support them directly to keep their independence work supported.
If you don't like it, DONATE
otherwise, they don't owe you anything
Vox has never produced better content. Requiring advertising revenue to keep that coming is hardly a sign that they're circling the drain. jesus, give it a rest.
I watched this ad twice and I did not understand a single thing. Turns out throwing jargon around is also inefficient.
Sick ad
Kudos to vox for not turning off the comments
I LOVE ADS IN MY SUBSCRIPTION FEED
Looked like an ad so I pushed of watching it until the end of my day. Still watched it. Should have read the title completely
Please do a video on IBM's good old fashion lets just say they did "NOT-SEE" support in WWII and without IBM it would have been far, far harder to do what was done to so many people .
And let's not forget how IBM are involved in managing israel's Population, Immigration, and Borders Authority databases, including the Biometric Population Registry that let israel document certain ethnic and religious groups in occupied lands. Sounds familiar...
@@jafrazer Yeah and it's way safer than Huawei's system that tracks you and sends the data back to the CCP. Are you Brain Dead?
so technically this is an ad?
Cant eat data .
I eat data all the time
IMB gives me IBS
People that want good documentaries for absolutely free and 0 advertisement are a mystery for me
Can we get better tape drives? Ibm has flash storage competitors, but noone really competes for tape storage, and flash storage is more temporary than the 70-200year shelf life of magnetic tape. Flash storage gets corrupted after ~3-6 months if not actively refreshed, which degrades the lifespan of the flash chips.
Well generally the problem is that with magnetic tape it takes forever to read the data and even longer (if not impossible) to change the data after the fact (this depends on the tape and the format). Even with this though, there have been developments in Tape Drives. Look up "Linear Tape Open" drives, they are basically what you are describing (a 18 TB magnetic drive), however like mentioned above they are mostly only used with mass data storage and backups, as writing to them takes forever but reading from them can be done with the speed of an average ssd.
@@avramcs I am waiting for lto 10. Archival storage is critical for future generations. Fujifilm and IBM have a monopoly on improving tape storage right now, and our great grand children deserve a copy of the 2020's just as we deserve a copy of Shakespeare 1500's or 1900's The Wizard of Oz. Samsung, Micron, Western Digital, and Kioxia all make and improve flash, so I wish ibm put more focus on tape technology.
@@viewer-of-content profit margins lol, fujifilm will have to push ibm on that because I guarantee you ibm won't lead
What for? Our target market in this arena are mostly due to compliance. Upper mgmt. doesn't really care how long it takes to write/read the data as long as it works. It's purpose is an air-gapped backup and nothing else. If you are playing on this market, i'm am certain tape vaulting is not your 2nd backup.
For more than 200yrs+ lifestan, I believe Piql already dominated this very niche market.
Vox, I think corporations took over your channel.
Props to IBM for surviving 5 generation of computers
Props to them for polluting Endicott, NY with TCE.
reminder to donate if you have a problem with these ads
No, Vox! No editorial - just an IBM promo video reposted. We expect more, Vox.
Love the ad. 🙏🏾
Phil Edwards did the right thing by leaving. This is just sad.
Great AD
Vice down, Vox next 😢
I’m all for brand-supported content. But this is really messy and forced. I don’t feel like I actually learned about how anything works - just “IBM good.”
ai made it 😂
sounds like you didn't even watch it anyway, it's IBM, not Microsoft
Great IBM is jumping on the cloud datastorage game. Now my digital privacy can be stored on a state of the art system. Awesome 😊
Well, now I know how C-Suite feels after I submit my annual budget report 😮
I wonder how much it cost to upload ads to the vox channel
Nothing more obnoxious than tech companies claiming they're doing anything for the better good of society
Why am I watching an ad? I have RUclips premium.
RUclips pls fix
No more data centers ?
Who wrote this ad?! It’s like something I’d read on a college discussion post
hmmm it’s just a normal storage just like other companies are providing. immutable snapshots can be done using storage vault
Isnt that just a DRAM cache?
Interesting
Very impressive!
Monsanto, roundup
is ibm having bad times?
Im okay with this advertiser content because it's not victim blaming scam victims (Zelle) and is actually an interesting video worth watching.
I wold be if the video was actually interesting, but this one was not
5 minutes Ad on Vox???
great job IBM
"forgive me father, I have sinned, I am building data farms on top of real farms" -type of video
This is essentially an ad for IBM's new storage system. Vox horribly explains it here, and the IBM rep doesn't help much either.
The simple tl;dr: IBM essentially *upgraded* the way SSD's store data using AI to utilize the most space possible, and access that data much faster. They also added built-in ransomware protection (Safeguarded Copy and Cyber Vault).
Yeah though never in the video did they talk about AI. They just showed a little cloud labelled "Machine Learning" connected to their grain silos.
Ignoring that this was an ad. What information exactly was conveyed here, there is literally nothing but marketing lingo.
This is hilarious, even for a Software Engineer this was basically nonsense.
This feels like it's straight out of the Onion (except they would've given the nameless engineer a funny name)
tl;dr: They're selling some data storage thing called a FCM which has non-modifiable backups inbuilt in it.
Some highlights:
Summary of video:
0:56 - Rounded Grain Silo's are really great!
1:07 - Global data production has increased from 33 to 120 zettabytes since 2018
(For some reason they say the silos had a direct impact on data production)
1:24 - IBM wants to sell you Storage FlashSystem.
1:42 - Nameless Engineer appears & starts talking about something called a FlashCore Module (FCM)?
* The FCM offloads "data reduction" from the processor???
* Apparently this lets you consume less energy, and makes it unique?
2:14 - Explains that an IBM FlashSystem uses FlashCore Modules
* Apparently requires at least 29% less energy than other storage systems.
2:25 - Nameless Engineer appears again
* FCM's Efficiency + Efficiency of Storage Controllers = Durability + Less Energy
3:06 - Apparently this helps data resilience, so if data is lost it can be easily restored?
* Shows the text "machine learning" on a cloud which is never explained.
3:50 - FCM's take snapshots of the system and makes it a "logical??" airgap.
* So no one can delete it, but it can expire
* A safeguarded copy is a immutable snapshots (basically non-modifiable backups)
* This safeguarded copy is on the flashsystem so it means it can restore quickly.
If you google it, you'll learn that FCM's are just an IBM's SSD alternative.
Also the nameless engineer is Andy Walls
"nobody can delete it" GDPR wants a word you you.
Are these the same solutions that IBM use for managing israel's Population, Immigration, and Borders Authority databases, including the Biometric Population Registry that let israel document and deny rights to certain ethnic and religious groups in occupied lands?
As an IBMer, I admit they're too boomers in this era 😅
Steve Jobs was right, IBM has the best scientist in the world, but they don't have any idea of what a content is.
Just because IBM is B2B, doesn't mean they ignore relevant topic and Gen-Z culture in creating next-gen content lol
4:40 the growth of the global population is absolutely slowing down
Well... SPDK/DPDK offloading to the NIC FPGA or even GPU had been there for a while...
Not impressed.
Pure Storage has been doing this for years.
And their ads were way more entertaining, at least when they were taking shots at EMC
I didn't learn anything :(
Neat!
What if IBM had continued making desktops and laptops, lmagine
I didn't learn anything from this video. Why did you post a commercial like an explainer video?
00:09 , 00:36 referência de transição (flashback histórico)
You should've started by defining "data". What data? All data? Any data?
how does IBM think this is beneficial to ad like this its nothing but detrimental to them
and vox and viewers
Just got an RTX 4080 over an 7900 XTX because I love ray tracing. 😅
I have a masters in computer engineering and this was all techno babble to me I have no understanding on how any of this is meant to work...

i feel like this metaphor leaves a lot to be desired. Very sad to say, and this could really just be me, but i understood nothing
A universal basic income.
Is this an explanation for farmers as target audience?
This was a stretch... lose lose all around
This is a good way for Vox to make money; use their talent to create 'infomercials'.
Рост населения в мире как раз замедляется!
Microsoft's project silica uses 0 energy for the long-term storage systems.
Wow😊😊
This is the most patriotic video I've seen in the past decade. Let's keep moving forward!
Why are you putting out 5 minute commercials on your channel? This is the kind of 💩 that makes me not want to be subscribed. I paid $10 a month so I don't have to see any commercials on RUclips. It's bad enough that I have to fast forward through 1 to 5 minutes of advertising on most videos nowadays. But here you guys go and blow all those other people out of the water by saying hey, we're not going to have a 5 minute commercial in a 15 minute video. We're just going to have a 5 minute commercial and call it a video. 🤬🤬🤯
Honestly enjoyed this video even tho it was an ad!
Or in other words, give IBM total control over your all your data, and they will allow you to use “your own” data in their systems! And you have to pay them for this privilege of using “your own” data too, of course😂
dang, she was talking for several minutes and didn’t even say anything
Duh talk about a bunch of jargon which the technology itself already exist…. Did not explain much on how the next gen storage be more efficient
SILENCE AD!!
So, how litter information should the video contain?
IBM: yes
That was awful.
Ayyy
AD? great…..
I like this way of advertising. I hope to see more from IBM this way. Too bad Intel is unteachable, they could learn a lot from IBM.
Too
This is the death of journalism, cheering it on is just sad.
@@crowonthepowerlinesgod forbid if someone trying to earn money, right?
@@crowonthepowerlines This is definitely NOT the death of journalism, if anything it is the only thing that keeps real journalism alive. Tell me, would you rather have individual videos clearly labeled as an ad like this separate from the main content, or would you rather have hidden sponsored content mixed in with regular content? Having sponsored and organic content clearly defined is exactly what journalism should be. There are too many videos on RUclips where sponsored content is being disguised as a product review or something similar
What is this ad? How efficiently IBM can mine your data from a corn silo? 😂💀
So corn isn't grass, it's storage? Got it.
Hope IBM compensated you well, at the cost of all your credibility.
Honestly, the analogy with silos is pretty bad. It's okay for Vox to release marked advertiser content to get funding but it should at least keep up with the quality of Vox videos and not waste 5 minutes of their viewers...
Keep the food away from the data handlers.
do you think common people understand what ibm is talking about.. no wonder ibm keep losing in many area
Wow what high quality as always
I'm cool with advertiser content if it actually feels like a vox video. You know, a detailed and interesting explanation on something... anything. This video is neither detailed nor interesting.
Agreed, this didn’t feel like a classic box video
