When building a rod, what do you do first? I'm thinking of putting on the grips and reel seat, then adding the eyelets and weave pattern afterward. Also, do you put one coat of thread finish or two coats, I'm using Prokote for my first build.
I use painters tape to hold the thread while I am wrapping. Then I will use masking tape on the ends to hold it while I close off the wrap on each end. I cut the extra thread and tape off before I finish closing off the wrap. Then I epoxy over all the threads. I hope that helps.
That is a great question, I did try that the first time and it did not come out looking the way I wanted it to. Try it both ways and you will understand.
When you put epoxy over a wrap like this (where the blank is still partially exposed) how does the finished product turn out? Does it just take multiple layers to even out? Thanks in advance, been enjoying the videos!
I marked the top every 4 cm (on 7ft medium rod). On the bottom of the rod i started on 2 cm then every 4 cm after that. hope that helps. As for how many dots, that depends how long you want the wrap. This is a easy wrap to do.
I have used it, If you use a light color and go over a dark color, the light color will show the other color under it. just keep that in mind when choosing to use it.
I have been trying to get this layout right for 2 days now. I’ve tried the tapered offset spacing , as well as just using the avg. circumference of the wrap and my layout never comes out square. And both methods I leave 2 dots in between the wraps
The spacing will be different with every rod thickness. In this case I think it was every 2cm and on the other side I started with 1cm then 2cm after that. I do not understand what you mean by "coming back the other way" if you skipped 2 dots like I did on the first pass, then you skip 2 dots coming back too. I hope this helps.
Very cool, I’m going to attempt this design on my first rod in a few weeks. It looks like you are doing 3 threads from each direction (purple and pink) and you keep alternating sides to get the “weave” look. Id be interested in knowing how you determined the spacing of the dots you used as a template. Is each dot spaced using the diameter of the butt section?
I put my order on this week. Just email Jake and start talking about what you like and he will help you come up with a custom rod that meets you needs. I can not wait to see it come together.

Thanks, I’ve just got into rod wrapping an ready like your videos. This one really caught my eye, going to do a LSU purple an gold on a white 7” blank…..Thanks again wrapp on brother.
I am sorry. It is very hard to put a 2-3 hour wrap into a short video. I am making a members only line of these wraps where it will be a unedited version to help people learn easier. If I do it on the main channel feed it does not get many views and if I do it in multiple video's it does not do well either.
Going to try this tonight wish me luck!
You got this.
Woul love to learn how to lay this out thanks and awesome work
You can do it!
Very cool
thanks for watching, I am glad you liked it.
Love you wrap, with this one do you wrap on top of thread one way and bottom the other or the same both ways?
Yes I do
See
Ed from Indiana.
How about how you do the layout of your raps ?
Excellent wrap! Looks Sick!
Thanks for watching. I am glad you liked it.
My favorite colors! That looks awesome!
Thanks for watching. Hope your rod is what you like too.
@@FishingLouisiana2020 So JV wasn’t kidding?? He said he commissioned you to build it!!

Thanks for watching. It all depends where the wrap is going. You more than likely will need more than 1 coat of epoxy.
how many coats do u think i should do?
You will need to check each one after it dries. You want it to come out as smooth as possible
@@FishingLouisiana2020 thank you !
Just remember, you can always do another coat. If you do it to thick and mess It up, you are stuck
What type of tape do you use to hold down the thread? I’m thinking of using this pattern for my first rod build!
I use painters tape to hold the thread while I am wrapping. Then I will use masking tape on the ends to hold it while I close off the wrap on each end. I cut the extra thread and tape off before I finish closing off the wrap. Then I epoxy over all the threads. I hope that helps.
@@FishingLouisiana2020 thanks a lot , I hope my first build goes well! 8ft xxh gator glass blank for big sharks and jacks from the pier and jetty!
You will do great, just take your time and have fun.
Looks great my friend 👍
Thank you 👍and thanks for watching.
Great design can you help me out on the dot spacing
Thanks in advance
Was the black just an outline? Or ios that a major part in teh wrap?
It was just a outline. Thanks for watching.
Hello I'm going to attempt this wrap what is the spacing on your marks
Read the comments, I have answered that a few times. I am glad you are going to give it a try. Let me know how it comes out.
I want a rod built. How do I get you to do it?
I love my rod he built. I am already planning another. His rods are very light and have a great action.
thanks for watching. Just email me or hit me up on Facebook and we can figure out what you want, or need.
I’m wondering why when you laid the first thread did you really need to cut it each time or could you just double back to make the original Xs?
That is a great question, I did try that the first time and it did not come out looking the way I wanted it to. Try it both ways and you will understand.

I put it on real thick the first time and then 2 or 3 layers after that until it is flat and smooth. Thanks for watching
How many dots did you use? How far apart? Is this easy for a beginner?
I marked the top every 4 cm (on 7ft medium rod). On the bottom of the rod i started on 2 cm then every 4 cm after that. hope that helps. As for how many dots, that depends how long you want the wrap. This is a easy wrap to do.
Your opinion… what do you think about using polyester embroidery thread for wraps?
I have used it, If you use a light color and go over a dark color, the light color will show the other color under it. just keep that in mind when choosing to use it.

Awesome wrap!
I would like the lay out directions. It’s hard to figure exactly where you start and spacing especially coming back the other way.
The spacing will be different with every rod thickness. In this case I think it was every 2cm and on the other side I started with 1cm then 2cm after that. Hey quick question so I wrap 12-13ft poles and I was wondering if you know what the measurements would be?
what measurement? the guide layout? the wrap layout?
@@FishingLouisiana2020 the wrap layout
To be honest, I do not document my wraps. I will do a video On how I come up with spacing for some of these wraps.
Very cool. #roadto4k

Each thread touches the last thread
The wrap is called 3D Chevron. It is in Billy Vivona’s Decorative wrap book on page 26.
Thanks for the information.
Billy didnt invent it, he just published other peoples work, he sucks

I have a good idea what you want and your parts are ordered. I will send you pictures as I build.
How far do you put your dot apart
it depends on the dia. of the rod
I would definitely love to have the layout for this rap.

Thank you for the input. I think you are right about that too. I did not know what it was called when I made the wrap, so I just named it. lol
