I was at the same concert as you! I loved your review, you really articulated it all so well. I will say, if you get to see Billie again, try in the lowest tier nearer the stage…there’s just this added intimacy of seeing her perform like that up close which has really left this lasting impression on me. Billie and Finneas really are something special.

Good story, review and personal thoughts!
In 2018, I groomed my then 12 year old daughter into liking Eilish so that she could be my chaperone/excuse at an upcoming concert filled with 11-17 year old girls, with a few additional suffering boyfriends and parents, making me feel less weird about being there...
The backstory is that I had a really difficult year, basically being stuck in a hospital bed, with oxygen, waiting for a lung transplant (having cystic fibrosis). Half of that year I needed more support, so I had to live apart from my family.
During that time, I hadn't a lot to do, so I discovered a lot of new music, including Billie Eilish. My daughter was severely into kpop then, so I had to keep up on that as well, to have something to chat with her about, while being parted, but I surely fed her with all the spectacular Eilish videos that were released at that time (and lots of other music as well).
In early August 2018, still waiting for lungs that would fit me, I took a chance and bought Eilish tickets to Stockholm in February 2019. Copenhagen would have been closer, but they sold out really fast and these extra Stockholm tickets just became available this day, because they changed to a larger venue.
This was a real gamble, since there was only 5 months until the concert and my condition was not good and I could only hope that my daughter would be interested in coming along - I bought the tickets while she was in school so I couldn't confirm with her. So at this time I couldn't move without wheelchair, oxygen and someone pushing.
And the lungs had to arrive, but I would also need about 2 to 4 months to recover from being bedridden for a year.
That very same day, after school, my daughter called me up and told me that I had to buy tickets for Eilish!
Just lucky chance - I didn't even have to convince her.
The rest of the summer, and the autumn was difficult, with infections and also depression on top, but eventually, in early November, lungs arrived!
Recovering at hospital during November and December, returning home (without the need for additional oxygen) to my family the day before Christmas. January spent on exercising the new lung and regaining muscle and mobility. Just adjusting to walking again was a substantial effort.
So in early February 2019 my then 13 year old daughter and I flew to Stockholm, stayed over at an old university friend's place and watched the show.
I recognize all the father issues and thoughts you mention... I positioned us (just a standing concert, no seats apart from a small vip section) just behind the sound control cage, so she could get up a few extra inches by standing on the fence fundaments - she was really short then. I could also lean on the fence, which was was really good, since standing up for 2.5 hours (supporting acts) was far beyond my leg capacity...
So anyway, it was a huge success, Eilish, the lungs and all

Yes, I have attended Billie Elish concerts before. There is definitely a lot of energy given by her and in response the audience also give off their energy. That night you attended I was also there but it was a much better exit from MSG to me because I am from NYC so I know what exit is best which is the one nearest the Macy's store. I think it only took me 45 minutes to get back to Queens my home base in the city. Yes, good concert that night at MSG.

She can't dance like she trained to, she tore her muscle from growth plate when she was younger, talked about it more than once. What a great show, you're an awesome Dad and guy. From this 54 single woman :)

Don’t know if you’ve seen the video she put out recently..but Billie basically was the leader of how her live show is put on. Pretty much like the director. She had final say in everything. She’s amazing. The video I’m talking about is the one she put out that was called something like “the road to opening night” of the happier than ever tour..

Girls are in love with Billie. They have girl crushes. It’s a movement. It’s been going on since the beginning. That’s why they throw their bras on stage. There’s a lot of girls that think Billie is gay or bi. Billie has said she’s straight. I’ll put it this way..you should listen to the most recent interview she did with Howard stern. You’ll learn A LOT. I think she did it late last year or early this year ..maybe in December or January.

Billie said that she took inspiration for her performances from hip hop, she always dreamed of being able to become a performer like rappers are, who manage to create a unique artist - audience bond in which they both have fun together and in which she's not the show, but they are together... she didn't take inspiration from other female pop artists, but from male rappers, and she wanted to recreate the same connection, using her years of studying dance for the rhythm etc. and experience to control the audience.. and normally pop artists all use backing tracks and lip sync, because dancing and singing is definitely almost impossible, and with her it is 10 times more difficult because she is alone on that stage and has to entertain everyone and can't stop for a moment, and she always jumps .. so imagine always jumping and singing with that breathy tone and low notes, it's impossible... but despite this she sings live even with some parts with the backing track... and she also has songs in acoustic with only her playing instruments Etc ..she is amazing! Amazing unique artist and amazing girl! ♥️ a revolution and a really good model for the next generation of female artists! She proved to them , they can be successful without all of that crap… if they want.. they can be FREE!! Exactly! 👏🏻 she signed with that label bc she wanted to be the only boss in her career and she is the only boss and the creative director behind everything! So young but an amazing strong charismatic sweet girl!

Great review, and hearing you enjoying it with your family, makes me excited and nervous for tomorrow. My 2 oldest sons will go to their first ever real indoor concert with me, and it happens to be the first concert in years from Stromae in Brussels, presenting his new album live. I remember them dancing as 4 year old kids to Papaoutai, and I had to film the whole song. So many reasons to be excited, and I hope we will have a great evening.

i went to this concert with my sister (who’s been a billie fan literally since she started to listen to music) and i had heard basically none of her music besides her popular stuff and wooooooowwwwwwwwwwww it was amazing. we had floor seats and were maybe 20 feet from the stage and it was so surreal, even with it being someone who i’m not a fan of. i loved when she would talk to the crowd and tell everyone how much she loved them and how happy she was to be performing for us in Chicago (united center was her first ever stadium show) it was just great so much positive energy

Great review! I think watching an artist perform at their first show of a tour, their last show of a tour, a tour in their hometown, a tour in a meaningful city (e.g. where they went to uni, where their significant other is from, where their grandparents/extended family live, or an MSG or other historic venue or something of the like; I remember Lorde saying how wonderful it was to be back in the Commonwealth when performing in Toronto) is always good.
btw "You got a quarter boss?" lol

When Happier Then Ever came on it was cathartic, it felt like it was just her and I singing together. I felt her energy just as she felt mine (in my head lol) it’s a time capsule that will always remain in my head and I’m thankful for that

the bra thing is just a coincidence that it's a bra, it's a symbol between fans and Billie bc the first time they did it .. she put it on when she was 15/16 (when she started her career/shows) and they have fun together with her bc of that , it was a special funny moment with fans and from then on it almost became a symbol of her career throwing a bra at her, now another symbol is throwing flowers at her during “lost cause” because she mentions the flowers she gave to her ex but he didn't care, and so the fans give them to her for her at every show in that part now 💙 so beautiful ... by doing concerts like this she managed to create a good relationship with her fans during these concerts and it really becomes ..”question and answer” with the fans .. both in music and by contact .. as if they were friends (fun fact: the fans who are in front, they are almost always the same and she has already been friends with them for many years now and she even remembers their names 😂)

Enjoyed your v-log, verbal log. Much better than any video version I saw. One comment I wanted to make was about her being a dancer but her movements were all random. Actually they are not. She's been perfecting those moves since she was 5 or 6 years old. Here's a snippet where you'd recognize those moves, especially the last two: ruclips.net/video/rdBZI29zs2Q/видео.html

I was excited in the same way you were for NDA for Breath Deeper when I saw Tame Impala, it was the first time I felt the song was too long just in a live setting. But then the beat switch was the craziest live moment I think I will ever see so I can’t complain, I’m sorry it was disappointing with NDA

  • @mattgwinn

I bought tickets to see her in Detroit with my niece and nephew, but they apparently grew out of their Billie phase and were kind of blah about going, so I sold the tickets. I have kind of mixed feelings about it because I'd love to see her in concert, but the tickets were expensive, the seats weren't great, Covid in Michigan is rampant, and I was worried that between the fans singing every song and Billie's extensive use of backing tracks that I wouldn't be able to hear her actually sing. I'll likely be sad come concert day, but I take solace in the thought that the people that bought the tickets from me likely bought them as Christmas presents and there are some super happy kids that may not have been able to go otherwise. And I can still look forward to seeing Aurora in May.
