Let’s be honest, JSU won this battle with a more balanced and musically refined sound. While no ensemble is flawless, the depth of musicality in JSU’s performance outshone SU’s this year, and I’ll explain why. First, SU's performance began with significant tempo issues, especially in the opening section. These inconsistencies in time, coupled with overall imprecise articulation, hindered the overall musical cohesion. This is particularly noticeable in the lower brass, where the tubas struggle with control in the lower register, producing a hollow and unstable sound. The articulation is inconsistent, leading to a "skating" effect that compromises clarity and definition in the bass lines. The section’s performance is further marred by frequent intonation issues, such as missed chords and incorrect notes, which are clearly audible throughout the piece. On the other hand, JSU’s tuba section, though relatively inexperienced, demonstrated a far more mature approach to the lower register. Despite being less developed compared to SU’s veterans, JSU's tubas exhibited far more control, producing a rich and full bass line with no noticeable instability or “skating” in the lower range. They maintained consistent tempo and demonstrated an admirable level of musicality, particularly in their ability to sustain a solid foundation in the ensemble without losing cohesion. This showed an impressive level of musical understanding, even from a younger, less seasoned section. The same can be said for the baritone and trombone sections. SU's baritones were certainly strong this year, delivering a consistent and solid performance, rarely showing signs of weakness. However, their trumpets and mellophones, especially in the upper registers, were a different story. The trumpets displayed significant inconsistency, with frequent intonation issues and a lack of articulation precision, particularly during chromatic runs. In quieter passages, the trumpets often fell out of tune, which undermined the overall quality of their performance. Additionally, the mellophones appeared hesitant, particularly when required to play in the upper registers or during octave leaps, which resulted in a lack of confidence in their execution. In contrast, JSU’s trumpet section, while not flawless, demonstrated far greater technical proficiency than SU’s. Their articulation was cleaner, their intonation more stable, and their sound fuller, even during softer passages. While JSU’s trumpet players could have improved in some areas, their performance was still overall more musical and cohesive compared to SU's, especially in terms of consistency and overall sound. The issue with many SU fans seems to stem from an overemphasis on volume, as they are often swayed by the sheer loudness of Southern’s performance rather than a true understanding of musicality. While volume can certainly be a factor in certain aspects of performance, it is far from the sole measure of musical success. As a musician, it’s clear that JSU’s performance this year was more refined, with better attention to intonation, articulation, and overall musicality. Ultimately, while SU has certain strong sections, especially in the lower brass and baritones, JSU’s superior attention to detail in tone quality, intonation, and musical maturity in the brass sections clearly earned them the win in this battle. The technical deficiencies and lack of control in SU's upper brass, combined with their frequent rhythmic and harmonic inconsistencies, are what led to their loss this year, despite the volume-driven narrative that some fans continue to perpetuate.
thank you, people like to judge based off of high notes how good a section is. the tuba was made for the lower/mid register anyway and we don’t get that much from the stallions when the parts are written low and from all the high notes you can hear the fatigue take a toll even in the zero. the notes are loud but it’s almost as if that’s all they have to present
