I'll watch the whole video all the way later today, but I was literally just talking about Magneto with one of my friends, saying how he started as a B tier when he only had a few cards announced, but now all of his cards announced made him a borderline S tier or S tier in our minds. Of course we need to play him first. My only concern is how expensive his cards are. X-Gene, Deft Focus and X-Jet will help him a lot of course, but he's still very expensive in the first few turns, even with his own ability. Other than that, he looks extremely fun and pretty solid. As we were ranking him, I was putting him somewhere between the 10th and 13th best hero's spot on my own personal list. I'm really curious to see him in action and one of my friends just can't wait ever since he was announced. However strong he might end up being, he looks solid at worst and very fun, which is more important to me!
Haha thats hilarious how that happened. I also saw a lot of sentiments about him online and a lot of people were underwhelmed with his initial reveal like your group (i had hope since the beginning 😆). I think the deckbuild will affect how Magneto plays more than most heroes which i always enjoy :)
So far my proxy games with him have been amazing. Hes one of the reasons I picked up this game recently and I'm happy Ive been winning most ot the time (my only games i lose are getting 4 boost iconed or made a bad decision with blocking... definitely stuff i coulda mitigated better if I knew the encounter decks dome more). He's at least an A tier hero, if not S. The cape and his resource cards seem to be the main things im happy to see. His wrapped in metal is like the thing i was most surprised with. Being able to shut down annoying minions for long periods of time was great. Magnetic missile though usually felt like a dead card 90% of the time tho, but it has the power resource icon so sometimes i was really happy to see it off of magnetic pull since it buffed up magneto's attack for an additional swing if i had armor+cape out. Plus i think missile isnt considered an attack so i dont think it triggers any thing like retaliate or venoms boost ability. I think when i faced Ronan i was able to somewhat stun lock him cause i was able to get rid of the hammer early on (thanks to the thawrt event) and i was able to 2-3 turns in a row take one of his non elite minions and just stun him since he didnt have the hammer anymore. The one thing i also was very surprised at is his nemesis set was kinda, meh. Every time i got shadowed of the past, i always had the answer to deal with it...sometimes benefit from it since i got a tough status from it. I also wanna say the side scheme also triggers stuff like white fox and digging deep??? Could be wrong on that, but if it does, sometimes the side scheme is actually just free to take out.
Thanks for sharing more of your experience with him! I definitely feel i would share a similar experience. In regards to his nemesis side scheme, they would trigger White Fox and the Digging Deeps 👌🏻
Magneto will be great at dealing with minions. His weak point will be thwarting. I think he'll be great in leadership (like all X Men), and aggression. Good call on perfect defense! Getting retaliate 2 will be very fun!
Thanks Wizrad! Good points. I think having only 2 thwart events does hold him back, but the readies with his cape and Utopia is insane. If he plays an ally every turn he can basic activate for 6 threat or 6 damage every turn!
@webwarriorfanatic that's true! He's going to love using X mansion/Mutant education to get those magnetic cards back into the deck. Overall very excited for the hero!
I think Magneto is definitely looking to be a strong all-around hero. I will say his cost curve is decently high, with an average cost of 2 and only two 1-cost cards. Even with all of his resource gen, I expect him to feel a bit slow on early turns as you draw a lot of expensive upgrades and need to find a way to play the most critical ones. I think he will be extremely tanky and very good at dealing with minions while only having a few minor weaknesses (namely being a bit expensive early). I'd also argue that Magneto does have cancels in his hero kit (for your versatility criteria). Electromagetic blast directly cancels an attachment, and wrapped in metal directly cancels a minion and banks it for future damage. While he can't cancel a treachery, canceling strong attachments or minions is still quite good.
Good points, i think his most expensive feeling card is his helmet which is only worth it if the steady is utilized. In terms of a slow start, i actually think he’ll come out the gate running because he can play any resource generator (including Avengers Mansion) + an ally on turn 1 without doubles. In regards to cancels, i totally agree those are very powerful effects with great utility, but I’m really talking about encounter card cancels so the player has some sort of defense going into the villain phase. For example if the villain pulls an Advance to win the game, or an Assault for lethal, or a Fanaticism which may change the course of the game does the hero have some way negate that. It’s not the most important category but it gives that hero versatility to play with more breathing room knowing that they can prevent whatever the villain puts out if they have that cancel in hand/on the table.
Fantastic review, fair, your rating system is excellent and in depth. You always make solid points with your arguments which means even if I disagree on certain ratings I still absolutely see WHY your rating is what it is. Great job! Magneto is definitely one of those characters I'll enjoy seeing played but will never play them myself . Never was that big a fan of Magneto as a character, plus his kit doesn't call to me. HOWEVER It'll be awesome seeing the decks people come up with and it does SEEM like Magneto can do equally well in each aspect. Hopefully he doesn't fall into the trap of 'Only good in Leadership/Justice' in solo that I've seen too many heroes fall into. Which I worry whenever a weak thwart is mentioned. It'd be awesome to have another hero that can handle at least 3 of the 5 aspects very well. I am disappointed that FFG didn't include a single reference in all of the cards to Magneto's infamy/fame in the Marvel vs Capcom series though. However, I imagine it'd be hard to design a card that captures his 8-Way Air Dash, his scoop of a grab and his ridiculous pringles combos. Though that is such a SPECIFIC thing to the fighting game community. Always look forward to your hero analysis! (PS: Where is the Marvel vs Capcom campaign box Fantasy Flight Games? It'd be AWESOME. )
Thank you Ritsy, I really appreciate that :) In terms of your views on Magneto, i can’t express how awesome it is to see that even though you’re not necessarily hyped on him, you’re still excited for the people that are. That openness is exactly what makes this community so great. I would be so excited for a Marvel vs Capcom box but i won’t be expecting it lol. That would be a great way to end the game (which i hope never happens) but i imagine licensing would be tough
How strong will Magneto be?

@@wizrad2762 totally agree he’s going to be super fun 😁😁😁

Great job on the analysis
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏 this video took a long time to make so i appreciate that :)
Don't get me wrong, I love Nightcrawler but I'm so excited to not have to jump through hoops to play Magneto's cards lol.
I feel that. Magneto is reminiscent of the older designs like core set heroes where he’s not streamlined into a certain playstyle. I love that 🤩
