WOMAD is a magical festival because you can stumble upon performances like this without quite knowing what to expect. Having listened to their hour long set, I can say with certainty that I am a fan. Abi has a beatutiful voice and the arrangements were beautiful. The audience reaction was overwhelming, so much so that the set over ran their time allocation.
I completely agree with you. I've been attending the WOMAD Festival for over 25 years, and i'd say that this was one of the best, if not THE best performance I have seen there. The atmosphere in the SIAM tent was amazing. This video doesn't do it justice.. you had to be there to experience the magic.
Before she started her set, she gave credit to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and spoke about how he had performed at this very festival in 1984, and the fact that he introduced the Qawaali genre to a western audience.
