North Cliffs Failure - Amazing Cliff Collapse caught on Camera!

- Active Coastal Erosion in Cornwall. See 'North Cliffs 3hrs Later' video on my channel also. Very lucky to witness 1000's of tonnes of rock falling into the Atlantic!
Thanks for all of your positive comments, sorry I can't reply to them all individually. Hopefully I can answer most of the FAQ's now....
The failure occurred at about 5pm on Friday 23rd September 2011. It took place on the North Coast of Cornwall. There were only a few people watching, with about the same number of inquisitive seals in the water! There were lots of 'small' failures just before the main event. This appears to be a progressive failure, the frequency and size of the smaller failures increased until the inevitable happened. The sound was incredible, those cliffs are about 150-200ft high. I'd been chatting to the couple mentioned in the clip only a few minutes before the footage was taken. They can just be seen walking away in the distance; the path had been fenced off and diverted, so they were quite safe. An amazing sight, and credit to R who took the video, I still can't stop revisiting it! Thanks again for all the comments, who says Geology isn't an exciting subject?!. Oh, & finally..... I'm happy to report that no seals or humans were hurt in the filming of this clip! ACSM(93) - Наука
"Look dear, just like the one we're standing on . . ."
My thought exactly...
Mine too
Omg😂
After the scream, you'd be tempted to push her off...
I would be scared that such a large event might trigger the other side to do it
If there was no woman there to scream, would the cliff still have collapsed?
The mainstream media was trying to pay the cliff for holding it together.
John DeLuca very good
it was the sound waves from her larynx that caused the cliff to fall
If the cliff didn’t collapse, would the woman scream?
sounds like that woman in the background had an orgasm over seeing that big cliff let loose lol .
My respect to the camera person for being able to hold the camera steady and pointed at the action the entire time.
They seem to be expecting the collapse , like it was a planned demolition .
right,11 years ago with a shitty camera👍
Especially with a bit*h who yells in his ears
@@votpavel Bet you're fun at parties. SMH
That man sounded just like a woman when he screamed. 😅
I've worked near here at hartland point, constructing some of the defence barriers by the lighthouse. We were also rescuing some of the massive concrete blocks that had been smashed by falling rocks. I've never been more nervous in a job in my life and my job is pretty risky
You should give roller coaster construction a try. It's pretty intimidating in the winter when your body gets too cold to function properly and your a hundred meters up.
@@darthvader5532
As a union ironworker been there done that, and yea they seem to get built in the winter.
Did a water ride to.
WHoTheHell sent live bodies down there to collect concrete barriers?!!! Like a helmet, steel toes, and good gloves would help in case of another falling boulder or a full collapse! geeez
@@darthvader5532 It's not a competition, man.
@@dukecraig2402 oh nice! It's fun work but the wear and tear takes a toll. I've never had the opportunity to do any water slides but I always wanted to, especially the newer ones with the sun lighting effects.
Just as it starts to happen, the video should end with a sign saying "To be continued next week "
Then it would be a cliffhanger.
😂😂😂

Oh maannnn 😂😂😂😂
It's been a decade. Has anyone gone back and videoed what it looks like now? The ocean waves would have eroded all the loose material at the base, but what about the loose material higher up? And/or has any other part of the cliff collapsed?
idk
it's disappeared completely. Now it's an Octopus Pub.

The cliffs are quite unstable there. Whole sides complete with footpaths disappear unrecorded.

Always amazes me that people walk along beaches close to the bottom of cliffs. If you grow up in such areas you never do that as you have seen these rockfalls so much. People are injured and killed quite regularly along coasts like North Yorkshire because they ignore this. The video is a reminder of how unstable eroded cliffs are.
"as you have seen rockfalls so much...blah...killed quite regularly..."
errr, I don't think so.
@@robertsemple299 sadly there are regular rockfalls on that coast and people have been killed, a recent example was the sad death of a 9 yr old child playing at the foot of the cliffs at Staithes.
THANK YOU for holding your camera steady when the action started! Too many videos start off steady, but when the even happens, they are suddenly waving their camera around, so that it’s just a blur. I can understand if you’re getting out of the way of something, but if you’re expecting it and you still move the camera?
About 4 decades ago I was on holiday in Cornwall. Every morning I walked my Irish Wolfhound on the cliff path. At the start of my second week about 50 yards of the cliff path vanished. All that remained was the farmers barbwire fence stretching across a chasm for about 50 yards. It could have been a case of wrong place at the wrong time! Maybe my dog was heavier than I thought!
Haaaaaaaaa. Funny. Glad you weren't walking your pooch that day... lol
Maybe you are!
The way that person yelled out so loudly and freaked out I thought they just HAD TO BE AMERICANS, lol !! 😳😂😂
Wow! That is crazy!
Couple of years back we had a big cliff fall. 200metres of road was gone and what was amazing; it happened between 3-5am so nobody was on the road when it happened. So lucky!!!
The first person leaving their house at 5am had a real surprise.

I can never understand girl screaming while they're on the safe distance from natural occasions like this
It's excitement, not fear.
We all need attention and validation of some sorts. Some get it by accomplishments, problems solving, or having wisdom, etc. Others find it easier just to be melodramatic or hysterical. It is quick and easy.
@@kimhesketh2016 While I loathe the selfie-taking mindset as much as the next sane person: Speaking for myself, screaming is an involuntary response. I am shy, middle of introvert-extrovert spectrum, HATE attention, but scream like a maniac when surprised/scared/excited. I couldn't NOT do it if I tried. Bonus: I used to get my ride tickets handed back to me when I got OFF the rides at the exhibition. So there's that! edited to add: Oh crap, if you're a psychologist I can hear it already. "oh I'm pleased we caught that" most British sentence ever spoken in context.
A spate of freezing and thawing can lead to this kind of rockface cracking and sliding. And any vibrations, such as from a pump, generator or heavy traffic, will do a lot to get a nearby rockface or pit edge ready to crumble.
I was walking my dog under that. Fortunately I'd remembered to bring an umbrella. Saved my life.
Imagine recording a rare moment like this, and then the cliff that you are standing on also says goodbye to you...

If I was standing on the edge of a cliff watching another cliff collapse, I might have second thoughts about my choice of geography.
LOL! You know it!
Holy Moley! That was a big fall!
Erosion is not a failure. Its a successful transformation of material.
You know after the spray and dust from the collapsing cliff had settled the guy should have turned to the squealing woman and said "We're standing on a cliff very similar to the one we just saw crumble."
I was on a ferry sailing to Cork in Ireland on the night when a hurricane was battering the British Isles. The ship was swaying from side to side so much we would have been thrown off our bunks so we sat on the floor with our feet braced against the opposite wall. My 'helpful' friend chose that moment to point out that we were on the same type of ferry as had sank at Zeebrugge!
All the wind blowing on the mic and we still have to hear that annoying scream. Smh
Your life is very difficult.
@@thomasbayer1843 Talking about yourself?
We were on a tour of Lake Superior in Michigan and witnessed a collapse of the cliff there. We had a ranger on board and we were asked to go over to the site after the water had calmed down and look for bodies as there were people hiking a trail along the top. Fortunately they were not there when it fell.
I wonder if the people there watching this event considered that they are standing on a cliff edge made of exactly the same material, and exactly the same age? Just the rumbling from the one that collapsed could easily have caused the one they were on to do the same.
Amazing. It probably took hundreds of thousands or even millions of years to cause that erosion and you happened to be there in that spec of time that it finally collapsed.

Yup...... maybe even patrillions of years

Yes, but..... of the trillions of millions of tons of exposed rocks that compose the earth's surface, only a few thousand tons slid a few metres at that moment.
