Had this tent on a two week camp in NI, 23mph winds, extreme downpours, pitch struggling with severe and fast run off at times and was completely bone dry. The thing stood high and mighty while others we passed had collapsed entirely. My buddy had the Rakoon 2 and it matched the Hyena 2 pound for pound. These OEX tents are the most underrated tents for British weather. It blows my MSR out of the water for value and it's fast becoming my favourite tent brand. Big fan of all your videos, thanks chum!
This tent is identical to the Eurohike DLX2 which I own, with the exception that the HH is 2000 on the Eurohike. Over the last four years I have been on Dartmoor many times in 40 mph winds, slashing rain, frost and sun. I have had no problems whatsoever and never had any condensation even with two of us in it, it is also remarkably quiet in high winds. The zip doesn't stop half way round as far as I've noticed. It is a great tent and was the only one which ticked all my boxes. I've looked at upgrading, but can't find a better tent even at a price three times as much.
A great review Dan and an honest one, that:s what I appreciate about you. It looks like a good little tent, fiberglass poles if they're if good quality don't bother me. I've had several tents with fiberglass poles survive the strong winds of Georgian Bay , on Huron Lake in Ontario, Canada , and survive a torrential thunder storm with strong winds while camping at Bon Echo, we were one of the few who survived. We saw lots of people leaving in their canoes for the trail head as they suffered broken poles, flattened tents etc . I've been camping for over 40 years with fiberglass poles and only had one incident of a pole spilting. Cheers Dan and keep them coming and glad to see your on the mend from your unfortunate deer incident.
Superb for the money Dan can see this flying of the shelf’s if you don’t like windows buy another type simple really for 65 quid and 5000 HH what do folks expect realistically .All the very best pal 👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴👍🏻🏴
Good review. I just bought this for a short camping trip. Tested with full biking gear - panniers, helmet, boots etc, in the rain. Dryness, size and comfort, no problem. I actually like the windows and the ventilation is great. So far, so good. Looking forward to getting out there in it.
Used tents with fibreglass poles for decades and only had one small section develop a crack but still was useable. The ‘cheap’ pegs that reviewers constantly harp on about are perfectly OK if you don’t camp on very stony ground. Just buy a better set if you really need them. If you want a better quality tent, just buy a dearer one in the range - simples!
I've used mine several times now, never let me down .for the price it's most impressive... Since I've been watching your videos, you've given me that inspiration to get back out there again, cheers bro,
I wish this tentso came out 2 years ago. My first tent was a EuroHike Cairns 3 DLX with 2k HH for £65. This is much better in weight, size and HH. If they gave it the upgrades it wouldn't be in the price range of people that don't know about tents. This is the perfect starter tent, they can upgrade later.
Just bought 2 of these for £55 each from go outdoors. Look hood buy yet to try them. Ive had 5000mm hydrostatic head tents before snd had torrential rain and it stood up to the test. Cant wait to get these out and test.
I bought mine for a 3 week motorcycle tour, used it multiple nights both wild camping and on camp site’s. The inner did not come attached with mine, but I did attach it and left it attached. If only the windows had some sort off cover to stop anyone looking in, I would be fine with. You really do need to have all vents open, or you will get a lot of condensation. The ground sheet is fine, and didn’t bother me although aluminium poles would have been nice. Had 2 nights off heavy heavy rain, and the tent was perfectly dry. Yes the peg’s are rubbish, so I took my own. Basically just confirming what was said in the video, after having used it for a longer period.
Well U had me on this Dan until about half way through, when U killed it for me by putting down what i believe are two of the best features of this tent, firstly being the windows & secondly having a proper PE ground sheet to the inner, instead of the thin treated polyester like most OEX tent floors seem to have... I'd sooner carry a few more g's to guarantee I'll stay dry... I'm also surprised that there was absolutely no mention to the the Eurohike Backpacker2 DLX, which this is a total copy of & was my main reason to buy it for comparison... Albeit it is made of slightly better materials & has a few extra lables on it, but thats about it... Sure change the poles to aluminium & put a second light hanging point at the high end, which could also then double as a drying line, make the window plastic slightly thinner maybe to save some tiny weight & could always add some velcro fixed curtains to the windows, as the EH Avon3 has, but other than that I dont think U can get a better bang for ya buck...! If you lose the windows, change the cathedral arch poles to curved, lose the split door & remove the decent ground sheet, basically U'll end up with a Jackal2...!🤣 But then that's only my opinion...!!!😄 People go on about the weight of the EHBP2DLXbeing 2.9/ Hyena 3kg, but I dont think that's a massive weight ght to carry & the closest OEX tent of this size, being the Jackle is heavier & U can't see out of that without having the door open, so I defo know wot I prefer...
Windows and poles are sweet 👌 can't complain with such a low price ., I just spent a week in the Scottish Highlands in the Hyena 2 and it was perfect., lil bit heavy but still a great tent ⛺️
Hi Dan, thanks for the review. Just taken my Hyena to Devon and camped in 4 days of heavy constant rain and high winds. Stated bone dry and tent withstood the wind. I could cook in the spacious porch area and the mesh kept out the bugs. I paid £55 for my tent, so happy! P.S. I like the windows!! Best wishes and please keep the reviews coming. 😊
I just picked up one of these at go outdoors a couple of weeks ago had it on Dartmoor twice in that time once in quite severe rain and it held up like a champ, can’t lie it is very tight fitting and the inside is a bit droopy even with all the clips attached but spot on for a one man
I have tent with one fibreglass pole which has not failed in high winds I have the Coleman bedrock 2 I have used this tent for winter camping great video dan
I agree, after purchase upgrade kit would be a fantastic way to make the tent a little bit better. For the price though I think it’s a fantastic tent. (Not keen on the windows though but that’s a minor issue)
@@jockmachaggis1080 It is a great little tent. It will certainly outlast some of its more expensive competitors. I agree about the windows, They need to go.
Ive got a Eurohike dlx 2man tent for a cheaper price … it looks exactly the same but lighter … i did buy an oex fox 2 and went back to using the Eurohike because im 6ft tall and i have to say its the best tent ive ever had
Every tent and waterproof clothing I use, I paint with TX-Direct by Nikwax. You're more or less guaranteed not to get wet. I am the kind of person who would buy this and carry a roll of decent gaffer tape. Or I might even upgrade the poles to alumnium ones myself. You could start with a mediocre cheap tent and after a few weeks, have quite a decent tent with one or two pretty straightforward upgrades.
I think 5000 HH is enough to keep you dry in extreme heavy rain, no water is getting through that. It's also been designed so wind won't stress the pole's, I reckon this tent is capable of standing the test of time with any expensive tent out there.
Good review mate. For £65 it's great for anyone who wants to go camping a couple of times a year and don't want to spend a fortune. Good starter tent. It would be good if manufacturers offered upgrade options like better poles etc. Although if you wanted to spend to upgrade, oex, vango and Naturehike all do great budget friendly tents. This reminds me of my first wildcamping tent, a Lichfield Apache 2 tent. Great for scouts or DofE.
A great review Dan. The tent, I think is great for the money especially if someone is just starting out camping and not venturing out too far or too long and this will give them the ability to either say " yes " to commit to more expensive tents for future camping or " no " as it might be just a couple of times a year thing. Personally I like it. Good to see you are on the mend from your ordeal and keep staying safe.
I started camping in the 80s. Then the cheapest reasonable festival tents cost about £100, a lot at the time, and mostly had fibreglass poles which were pretty good, they bent in the wind and snapped but they were quite good quality. I reckon modern fibreglass poles are less well made to keep the tents cheap.
Great review. I’ve just got one for £62 from Amazon as I’m just starting out. I’m pleased with what I’ve got and excited to be getting out there! Fibreglass poles noted, yes it’s heavy and the floor is a bit ‘crunchy’ 😂 but for £62 I can live with that as i familiarise myself and figure out what’s important to me/my needs when camping. The windows don’t bother me at all and I quite like them 😊. Thanks for your review 👍🏻
Just been out for the weekend in this tent, in the sale it cost me £54. After using it I’d say it’s outstanding for the money. What do you want for the money?! Plenty room, no leaks and even a vestibule for cooking. It’s a winner for me 😎
Looks better value than that one you had from the Range. We found if you cover the grass in the vestibule area with plastic sheet it cuts down on the condensation.
I bought this. It's cheap. It won't leak, but it has major flaws with poles/pegs/groundsheet/ no extension/zip closure/ nasty little windows... Back to GO to get full refund, and to spend a little more on a Phoxx 2 or Jackal 2. Cheap is always expensive in the long run. Sadly. These OEX tents are generally very good indeed. This one isn't. I've had several. The saving simply isn't worth the compromises, unless the cost of living is impacting you heavily. Good review. Thanks.
This is the OEX version of the Eurohike Backpacker 2 DLX but with some good upgrades. I own both and its my love for the 2 DLX that made me buy the OEX Hyena 2. This tent has kept me bone dry and very comfortable in some horrible wet weather. Being a budget tent hasn't stopped the tent material being of good quality and an outstanding waterproof rating of 5000 HH. The cathedral arch pole design and mesh pole inserts give it good stability in the wind depite using fibre glass poles. Correct anchoring of the guy lines will further add to stabilty. Despite negative reviews i have a lot of love for this simple, well made tent. The wire ground pegs can easily be replaced with some alloy pegs. The weight is no issue for me at the moment. My beers are what weigh my pack down. 😂 The simple guy rope toggles i really do like as they adjust in seconds.
Hi Dan, Pity about the weight as this is a nice spacious tent, however if I ditch the 12 cans it is doable, for the price and the super H/H 5000 is excellent for a tent of this price! Keep up the good video's Dan! Cheers Mark!
A good tent. The materials are a notch down from Vango but should last if treated right , the small Vango s are tougher and a degree warmer and windproof. My Vango 300 tent is now 14 years old and as good as new.
I love mine. Only thing I have changed is the pegs. Was a toss up between this and the Phoxx2. Fibreglass poles have much more flex than aluminium so a lot more forgivving! Much more space in this for 2 people and a much bigger vestibuke for cooking than the Phoxx2, no brainer for me 🙂
Was going to get this tent for my teenage son’s but was put off by the windows and weight. Ended up getting a couple of Nordrok Dual Adventure tents for them for less than £40 each.
For the money it's a great tent. I don't understand why people don't like the windows, is it a privacy issue ?. What are the benefits of Aluminium poles?. To be fair I think your spot on with the ground sheet, it is noisy and would drive mad. Great video again to always look forward to them .
I l actually like the windows. Looks a great tent, it definitely looks far better than just a throw away “festival” tent. I think the problem is you can’t get much better for less than £150, definitely not at £65 AND you certainly won’t be getting alloy poles and 5000hh (please do a vid if you can find one) Even £200+ tents come with fibreglass poles ! ,
Thanks Dan, good review, I agree the 3 changes/upgrades would make a far better job. The windows especially; more work, difficult material to joint seal, all to make it look tacky and invite leaks, its a bad move every way for dubious gain.
Spent the other night in one of these, agree with the review points. Managed to get mine for around £52 with various discounts. Pros: Seems sturdy in construction for price point, good value overall, good size vestibule which is mostly covered if raining and the door is open, fly sheet seems well constructed. Cons: A bit weighty, fibreglass poles, pole attachment points are basic, pegs are awful, groundsheet a bit noisy, attachment points where the inner attaches to the fly look slightly crude. Windows are a personal preference. I also found the inner tent tends to become unhooked from the fly sheet when storing it. The hook on the inner ceiling could also be more central or at the vestibule end for a lamp attachment, as it’s currently over your feet. None of these are deal breakers. I got it for a beater tent when moto/campsite camping etc that I won’t be too precious about, but I would still trust to keep protected/dry and I think it will do that job well. I would’ve been happy to spend a little more for ally poles and a better attachment system.
Great review Dan really don’t think it’s that bad for the money windows wouldn’t bother me really tend to agree on the floor right enough and the pegs not really had any fibreglass poles break on me I might just be lucky but think it’s defo a great buy thanks for sharing take care buddy and all the best 👍👌🔥🔥❤️
Maybe I should not comment about fiberglass poles: I am an Old Fella and my experience goes back. I never had a fiberglass pole fail until my kit was a good few seasons old. In my time, they tended to get dry and brittle. I camped in a windy area.
I like the cathedral poles setup and the headroom. I just wish the poles were aluminium. I refuse to do carbon poles after they snapped in the wind, on my first tent
I've not got any OEX stuff myself, i've got more than enough equipment to last me, unless i break something, looks pretty good gear for the price range, i always like seeing new gear though mate 👍
I’ve been in extremely bad weather with fiberglass poles never had a problem. The most important thing is site selection. The second thing is setting the tent up right. I’d rather have fiberglass then anything else.
A bit like my Eurohike Backpacker dlx 2, that cost me under £60 yet has taken storms of high winds 50-60 mph winds and lashing it down. My only criticism is the stupid clear window bits at the front. Peg it down right and its good. It's very similar to this tent.
Decent Tent for the money Dan,dead on for those new to camping or on a tight budget, what more would you want, keeps you dry thats the main thing, cheap and cheerful not to be fashion conscious lol😀
Hi Dan thanks for the excellent review. I've just bought the Hyena today, then I found your review 🙄 i got mine for £54 from GO. I've obviously put it up and the inner tent had to attached, i agree the pegs are cheap so ill be robbing some from one of my other tents. I do like the fact the vestibule hasn't got a ground sheet i find they puddle if its rains and you're go in and out because of the slopping door. Agree ally poles would have been better but for 54 quid its looking like ive got a bargain and it looks ideal for the NC500 on my Mbike.
If the windows were replaced with mesh and a solid zip up id like it more i havs a tent with windows too its an old beaver creak but i still love my tent and its held out in the most heavy storm , slept like a baby in it ,,,,,,, i cryed all night and shit my pants ......lol joke it was perfect ......love your hounest reviews .......
Hi Dan , For the price , an " up in one " tent is very good , shame about the Groundsheet , and the Fiberglass poles , but at 500o mm hydrostatic head , its better than my Vango ! 🤔😙
Having pitched my new Hyena II for the first tome today, got to agree the pegs you get are really not fit for purpose. Got to by better pegs then repitch tent.
Overall the tent looks good but id be more concerned at the fact the windows might leave your bags and equipment on display making it that bit easier for any possible theifs
That tent really reminds me of another tent however I cannot for the life of me remember which one? Windows with no way to cover them are a pain in the neck on campsites as it like windows on your house people will look in if they can. 3kg for a 2 person hiking tent seems really heavy to me so anything they did to make it lighter would be great as I really like the design.
Bought this for my son first music festival second pitch the ferrules snapped on the pole, the poles are trash. First pitch was a test pitch was ok then.
Hiya just come across your page... Which tent would you recommend for a 1 or 2 person and ideally with the insides that is aready joined together instead of clippong the inner sheet / fly net/ sleeping area. So it would be more easier to just have the tent up quicker
The packsize alone tells me I'm not touching it with a barge pole. That's definitely designed as a festival use it dump it job. But for the cash, ya can't complain.
I just bought the Tamar 2 person tent. The tent poles come apart in the sleeves, one of the sleeves is now ripped. Putting it up is a nightmare because of the poles separating, putting in the inner is a nightmare because as you do the toggles, it gets harder and harder to get the toggles into the hoops. You can't sit anywhere while doing the inner, and when it was finally set up, there was no vestibule for anything. Quite how OEX think two people with two rucksacks could fit in the tent is beyond me. I have given up on it already, and will be buying the Opalus 3 instead.
Vango s last longer
Especially the flysheet proofing.Oex are fantastic value.

I’m going to get it and make cute Velcro curtain thingies for it! For some reason I love those windows!
Just got one of these to take on a thru hike! Despite the weight, the price and the size really sold this tent for me.

I think you’re being ever so harsh it’s a £65 tent I not going to buy this and go to the Himalayas it look like a great tent for the money
100% agree
Absolutely. What a douche bag
Um, he does point out that despite it's misgivings, the tent is pretty good for the money.
I'm sure the Himalayas would agree.

My mate's son wants to start camping I've told him about the low Budget camping tent from OEX, he said thank you for sharing a great video 👍 👏
Have you told him about going big or going home?
Very welcome

Brilliant review. Many thanks. For my sort of camping (lightweight, but travelling by car) I think this would be more than capable.
Love this tent. I've had it out in the snows and performed perfectly. I have the EuroHike DLX 2 which is a copy of this one.

Hi Dan you really did a good job of reviewing the tent well done
The tension strap doesn't pull the groundsheet tight. It' prevents the poles from over extending thus making it easier to setup.
I think 5000 HH is enough to keep you dry in extreme heavy rain, no water is getting through that. It's also been designed so wind won't stress the pole's, I reckon this tent is capable of standing the test of time with any expensive tent out there.
Dan the man, I have been flying through your vids the last couple weeks, cool bloke
Good old boy
Good review mate.
For £65 it's great for anyone who wants to go camping a couple of times a year and don't want to spend a fortune. Good starter tent.

I think the problem is you can’t get much better for less than £150, definitely not at £65 AND you certainly won’t be getting alloy poles and 5000hh (please do a vid if you can find one) Even £200+ tents come with fibreglass poles ! ,
Isn't it possible to buy metal poles separately?
Thanks Dan, good review, I agree the 3 changes/upgrades would make a far better job. The windows especially; more work, difficult material to joint seal, all to make it look tacky and invite leaks, its a bad move every way for dubious gain.
That's a great looking budget tent.
I hope oex make a better model
@@englishwoodsman is OEX a brand specific to Europe because I have not seen any of them here in the States.
This is a great starter tent that you can use for festival's or a start just to get into camping
Great review and video buddy. I love watching your channel.👍
I have just watched your review after purchase, I can’t wait to get out in it properly.
It's a great tent for the price
@@englishwoodsman very happy with the size, I will probably get some better pegs.
Nice clear review, I like this tent seems good for the price and easy to use...thanks
I'd buy it with the improvements I'd get it for myself, I like plenty of air flow through it.
Thanks for watching
Ha. Men never have an issue wondering where our zips are
It's true 😅😅
That looks like a pretty crackin beginners tent for 65 quid!
Thank you for watching
Decent Tent for the money Dan,dead on for those new to camping or on a tight budget, what more would you want, keeps you dry thats the main thing, cheap and cheerful not to be fashion conscious lol😀
It’s a good tent i don’t mind the windows myself it’s a great tent for a beginner Dan
👍👍👍
Just got one can't wait.
Enjoy mate
It's very similar to the nature hike dlx 2 but with higher hydrostatic head. I think it would be a nice affordable tent.
Got mine for 51 not tried it yet looking forward to it
A lot of people don't have the money now and by looking at it, its no that bad also better than a tarp !
What they do for the money is still unreal. 👍
Thank you for watching. Happy camping .
That is a nice looking tent for the money,
100%
It's a summer tent and it's perfect
Oex need to make a really light version of this i'll buy it to try it. I like this tent 👌
My main concern with this tent is the windows. I wonder if they will suffer from UV damage. It is sort of a budget version of the Jackal II
Good entry level tent for the money.
Maybe keep the windows but add a curtain panel so all your stuff is not on view?
Hi Dan , For the price , an " up in one " tent is very good , shame about the Groundsheet , and the Fiberglass poles , but at 500o mm hydrostatic head , its better than my Vango ! 🤔😙
Hi Bob 👋 👋 👋
Bought myself one of these for festival seasons, guess we will see how it holds haha
Having pitched my new Hyena II for the first tome today, got to agree the pegs you get are really not fit for purpose. Got to by better pegs then repitch tent.
If you have those changes / extras then just buy a more expensive tent with them. This is a great entry level tent that'll more than do for most folk
Great little tent for the money mate. Just prefer the rakoon 👍
Reminds me a bit of the Bandicoot ll 2 you reviewed in yours first video, just not as red.
Bought this for my son first music festival second pitch the ferrules snapped on the pole, the poles are trash. First pitch was a test pitch was ok then.
I like it as is.
Looks pretty good, a little heavy tent.
It is the old eurohike DLX2 backpacking tent with OEX labels. I have one & use it for festivals, it is okay for the price
yeah
But with HH 5000
Sorry Dan I pressed the thumb down button. I re-pressed the upper thumb button so I hope it counter acts itself. Anyway good video btw! Cheers Luke.
Wish my came with the ground sheet came attached together
cheers, great review
Glad I just got the Coyote 3 instead of this, definitely a much better tent. The ground sheet here is the crinkly type that I can't stand!
Thank you for your comment
Hiya just come across your page... Which tent would you recommend for a 1 or 2 person and ideally with the insides that is aready joined together instead of clippong the inner sheet / fly net/ sleeping area. So it would be more easier to just have the tent up quicker
The packsize alone tells me I'm not touching it with a barge pole.
That's definitely designed as a festival use it dump it job. But for the cash, ya can't complain.
I want it for the windows for rain camping. Could you swap the poles for aluminium poles?
Its better than that bin liner you bought from The Range.
How do I tighten the strap on the bottom, in the video it has tension
It’s unbelievable good for the money , £65 buys very little these days
I just bought the Tamar 2 person tent. The tent poles come apart in the sleeves, one of the sleeves is now ripped. Putting it up is a nightmare because of the poles separating, putting in the inner is a nightmare because as you do the toggles, it gets harder and harder to get the toggles into the hoops. You can't sit anywhere while doing the inner, and when it was finally set up, there was no vestibule for anything. Quite how OEX think two people with two rucksacks could fit in the tent is beyond me. I have given up on it already, and will be buying the Opalus 3 instead.
