    The most moving story from the witch trials for me was Giles Corey. They pressed him with rocks to get him to confess, to which he replied "more weight".

    • @Whittdocs

      That was a crazy situation for sure.

    • @elizabethcompton738

      He did that so they couldn't make a "convicted witch" out of him, so they weren't able to seize his property, which went to his heirs.

    • @WavyGravey

      Giles Corey's punishment was because he refused to stand trial, not because he wouldn't confess witchcraft.

      @@WavyGravey looks like it was because he refused to enter a plea. Thanks for the correction

      Hey there! I'm currently writing a book about Giles Corey, so maybe I can help with this. In order for a prisoner to stand trial, they would have to be asked by the magistrate "How will you be tried?" The correct answer was "By God and my country." The case could not proceed until these words had been spoken. Giles was the only one who "stood mute" at his arraignment. He was asked how he would be tried, and just said nothing. This threw a big wrench in the proceedings, and he knew it. The punishment for standing mute was "peine forte et dure" or "strong and hard punishment." They weren't trying to kill Giles, only try to scare the frail old man into saying those simple 5 words. So it wasn't because he refused to enter a plea (he maintained his innocence all through his examination in April of that year), but was because he would not "put himself upon the country." Hope that helps, and thanks for spreading the love about Giles and Martha!

    I have always wanted to visit these cemeteries in Salem. Such a horrible time where if you were accused nothing would stop your death. The ways they put them to death were horrific.

    One of my bucket list travel locations is Salem, Mass. I know it's turned into more of a tourist trap, but the history of the city is so deep and rich. If you haven't been to St. Augustine yet, Whit, I would recommend a visit there!

    That’s really neat! I’m surprised they were given a decent burial. It’s like, from time to time, people were accused of being vampires. They’d get so paranoid that they’d dig the person up and remove the heart. If you get to Mississippi, check out the Yazoo City Witch. A really fascinating story and grave.

      Any of them who were given decent burials had one only because their family retrieved their body, under the cover of darkness, from the pit they were heaved into as removing their remains was a criminal offense. People who were tried and acquitted would have been buried whereever they lived out the rest of their lives.

    • @geebrewer8186
      @geebrewer8186 9 месяцев назад

      I think it was illegal to bury an accused, convicted witch in the town cemeteries, so the family would take the body home and bury it on their farms.

    If you want to visit another Witch Trials site check out "Salem Town". Otherwise known as Danvers, Mass. The Rebecca Nurse house is located at 149 Pine St. In a field (at least it was a field the last time I was there) behind the house is another cemetery associated with the trial and it's victims. I had family that lived on a bordering street and enjoyed visiting the house and grounds.

    I live in Chicago and go to Salem every few years. The dark history is very harsh of our country for sure. Yet, it's such a beautiful place. Those puritans were evil to families, women and children then they started hanging men. Probably because most of Salem's women were dead. I always wanted to know where all those that were accused of witchcraft are actually buried. A historian once told me that their families would bury them on private property with no head stone. The cemetery is just a memorial ( in the side section) for the accused. Very sad.

    Interesting you put this up today. Just a couple days ago the state pardoned the only one convicted that wasn't cleared in 1711. Elizabeth Johnson was her name. I did a quick search for her grave and didn't find it listed anywhere ( I could easily have missed it. It wasn't a very thorough search). Not all that were convicted were executed. She was one that wasn't executed and spent the rest of her life trying to clear her name.

    I watched a documentary that claimed there was a mold that grew on the grain grown locally and subsequently on the bread produced as well . This mold affected the brain and caused the type of hysteria described in reports. So a chemical imbalance in the human might have something to do with it. I'd be hard pressed to cite the documentary 'cause it's been many years since I've seen it.
