    How to download apps not present in google play store in android ?

  • @broodsincorner
    @broodsincorner 2 года назад +1

    So you wouldn't be worried about installing apps with trackers onto a de-Googled phone via an anonymous Aurora session? Will that protect the device identity and personal data well enough? Or would it be better to avoid all apps with trackers?

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  2 года назад +4

      As a first choice, I try to avoid apps with trackers. If for whatever reason, I need to use an app that has trackers, then I block the apps (and trackers) internet access using the built in firewall (so Network access and Background Data access). I don;t install apps that have trackers and require Internet access to work (for example closed source messenger apps like Whatsapp, things like Google Drive etc.)

    • @broodsincorner
      @broodsincorner 2 года назад +1

      @@AndroidPrivacyLab Ok then I might switch my VPN to one without trackers.
      For others apps that still have trackers, can blocking the Network Access and Background Data Access be done just within the app settings on any phone?

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  2 года назад +2

      @@broodsincorner GrapheneOS and CalyxOS only allow you to block Network access for an app in the app permissions. A stock ROM won't have this permission (surprise surprise as it's their business model to collect data about it's user) but should have the Background Data toggle. I have a GrapheneOS setup video that goes over this in detail.

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab

    Is there anyway we can locate the apk files of the app we've installed from f-droid? Like on the google's files app? Since they are inaccessible via stock file manager.

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  2 года назад

      There might be but I haven't been able to find it. Aurora Store offers that functionality. My only suggestion is to access F-Droid on your phone browser (not the app) and you can download it there under the apps listing.

    I am having a query as the reviews, stars mentioned on Aurora same as Google Play store?

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  2 года назад +1

      No, there seems to be a small amount of discrepancy between the two. I'm not sure the reasoning - perhaps there is an update delay on what Aurora receives regarding star ratings from the Google Play Store.

      In MIUI 12, you have to go to "My device>All spec" than you click three times on MIUI version square, than you will see a message saying that now you are a developer. Then you go "Settings>Additional settings>Developer options>(scroll until the end)Turn on MIUI optimization" then disable it

      For FDroid or Aurora Store? Search in Android settings for Install Unknown Apps and see if FDroid or Aurora are given permission to do so. If that doesn't work then I would uninstall and reinstall each app.

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab

      No, battery life should be unaffected unless you have it F-Droid checking for updates hourly. To check for updates in Aurora, then you need to open the app and check manually.

    Thanks so much. I just can't get wazzapmigrator (for whatsapp chat history from iphone to android) to recognize the license.. Would I need microG for that? And do you have a guide on that? Cheers

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  3 года назад +1

      I'm assuming you are using some sort of DeGoogled ROM like Lineage, GrapheneOS or CalyxOS? Did you try to log into your Google Play account in Aurora Store and then try to download and open the app? Most will work in this way but some won't. If that does not work you might need microG or use GrapheneOS instead and implements their Google Play feature grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-play-services

      @@AndroidPrivacyLab Thanks. I got it to work with GrapheneOS' google play service. Still had to login for installing my already paid app but it worked. I was just wondering, can I use the gmail or spreadsheet apps on their browser Vanadium or do I need microG installed for that one? Thanks again.

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  3 года назад +1

      Yes, for those you would need CalyxOS and microG installed, or GrapheneOS with their Google Play Services installed.

    Hi Jason, I have downloaded Aurora store on my Huawei phone but I cannot open apps as its still saying I need Google Play services?

    • @AndroidPrivacyLab
      @AndroidPrivacyLab  3 года назад

      Some apps might need Google Play Services while others say they do but actually work without it. I'm not 100% familiar with the Huawei interface, but when the notification comes up you might be able to long press on it, then you can turn off warning notifications specifically for Google or Google Play Services.
