Hey Hugh! The pop-ups where you explain your actions are super insightful for new players like myself. I really learn so much from these videos! It definitely would've been interesting to see how this game played out if you had used your RB to go somewhere else.
My suggestion would be to include the post-game commentary as text, instead of injecting it as video inside the video. This way anyone who is interested can pause the video and read the text, and anyone who is not interested can ignore the text and continue watching. The current format is distracting IMHO. It breaks the continuity of the game.
With the Road Builder... I would have gone to the wheat port instead and made every 5 a free card and every 10 a free card. we had so much wheat production it would have helped speed up our end game. What would you have done?
100% using the road builder towards the 4/11 to loop for road + giving open settle, you are already getting gang robbed that wont change, also cant imagine discarding 4 ore when you have city outs to prevent red from getting ore, when he already has city in hand bc you share ore rolls. You would rather him get the ore than the wheat.
As black isn’t close to being a threat, it is very reasonable to get blue out of the game. After the road builder move, you only have to worry about red, allowing you to focus on 1 opponent.
I thought you were kicking yourself for not going to the 411 with it, thereby taking road and having won the game like 5 or 10 orbits before blue did. You were getting robbed already anyway. So that's what I would have done.
real time thoughts: I think u should've road build to 4 11 wheat, u still get the 3:1, and u also get more production. and u could always compete road still or win with cities and settles. I think you got too focused on blocking blues connect and should've played more pragmatically. That being said, I never would've even considered the idea to block his connect so your experiences really shows!
definitely thought the RB shoulda built up to the 11-4? woulda been on 8, road pathway secured, and an open settle on 8-4 and then only would have had to thought of how to get last point, wouldnt have mattered if that made you way ahead bc you were already the clear target regardless
it's a great point that taking road doesn't really change anything because i'm already so far ahead. this might be the actual right play. solidify road and get a point in the process.
I like the format where you chime in and say this was a mistake, or what is better here, I find catan interesting because of the strategy aspect part of the game. Love the videos this is my first time commenting, the only quarrel I have is when you get upset at getting robbed when you're obviously the rob, didn't do it this game though, you knew you were definitely the rob. ;)
i appreciate the support and the feedback! I try to be objective about getting robbed as much as I can, but admittedly, my competitive side shines through a little too much sometimes haha.
The early 7s were hilarious to watch. Totally feel your pain about not wanting to make enemies... You really should have won that one. Seemed inevitable until the rolls dried up. Question: Why build to the 34 rather than the 84 initially?
tbh. I think your rb was fine, because with some rolls blue does connect and you don't know how long the game is gonna go. 3:1 as good as wheat port imo. Also, contrary to some opinions perhaps, I think popping when you're at 6 or 7 points is actually a good idea, bc. you build equity in form of protection, a mono, a VP, a rb, all which can help you bridge that last 2-3 points. Whereas settles and cities become a bit harder to get by and you can block the player who is the danger. GG
all great points! I think I need to do a better job of compromising with myself on "no devs". Sometimes it's ok to pop as a road and city player if your hand is stuck or you're pacing too hard and need to protect yourself. I appreciate the thought you put into this comment!
Why road to the 3 4 instead of the 8 4? I can't imagine the diversity of adding a 3 is better than the extra production from an 8 wood. Were you worried about solo block on the wood?
I just dont see how you dont city the 9 ore? Crazy. Also i would NOT feed blue road. Id feel more comfortable feeding black road. Smh. I also wouldve blocked his 3 ore if you felt he was close to winning. Odd and strange game play by all of you. Blue had no business winning the game. I do agree you went hella dry at the end. That usually happens to me. Even though like you, i have almost every single number smh. Next time!
I think the term pacing gets thrown around a lot in the catan community but I think it's over considered especially when you're on higher elo tables. It's really only relevant on tables where people just aren't very good and look at your score and do no more analysis beyond that. I think you were far too concerned about taking road and looking too strong... They were already 3v1ing you, so why not just take road and make it harder for blue? I would've just stuck with the plan, gone to the 3:1 on the east and tried to close out the game asap

I'd have gone to the wheat port. but only if I'd gone to the 43 via the 911 instead of the 810 earlier...

Definitely. This + not giving blue the plow to the 3for1 you would most likely have won

Thanks dude!

No just a bad decision not even looking at the 8-4 you’re totally correct
chet holmgreen of catan
Go celts tho
@ has anyone told you that you look like Chet tho hahah
Someone did on the live stream last night that might have been you lol. It’s the first time I’ve heard it but I see it!

Yeah mistakes everywhere. It’s like my brain died mid game lol.

I think those are all fair suggestions/critiques. Take road and dominate they were already ganging up. Wish I took that approach I would have won!
