I am using this approach for making my spheres, and so far I love it. It is very easy for me to get the "close to perfect" sphere. I have learned from another woodturner on RUclips, who is using the same math of 0.293D +0.414D +0.293D = 1D for dividing the blank, His channel is "As wood turns" and his name is Alan Starton.

This is the method I use but i use an app on my iPhone called geometrics to give me the measurements

Hi Jim! Thank you, my friend, for the comments. I don't think I have any more space in the cell for apps, ha, ha, ha, ha! I new the ratio by heart, but I wanted to show that it comes from some place. Cheers! Daniel

I stopped the video at 3.34 and just enjoyed the elegant mathematics. I loved this video, thank you.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

Hi Brendan! Thank you very much, my dear friend, for watching the video and for telling me about the math. One anecdotal fact, I started doing the math and for some reason was obtaining a value that did not make sense, then I realized than rather than using an octagon circumscribing the circle, I was doing the other way around, lol! I know that most people will not care about the math, but I am curious that way, ha, ha, ha! So, at least I had somebody to pause and check! Cheers! Daniel

Thanks for a great tutorial! Have you explained your abrasive paste recipe in your videos? I would like to make my own too, looked very effective. Also, as a beginner wooodturner I haven't realised how using a pencil to paint the uneven areas can guide shaping. Again, thanks!

Thank you very much, my friend, I am glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, indeed, I have a couple of videos were I show how to make the abrasive paste, please find the link below:

Hi Daniel, Fantastic sphere. You make it look so easy and I know it is not easy. One day I might give this a go but my skill level is not there yet, so more practice I think. Cheers, Huw

Hi Huw! Thank you, my dear friend, for your nice comments! Just keep practicing, believe me, it makes all the difference. I broke more than a couple of balls before I got to this point! Oops, maybe that was not the way to put it! Ha, ha, ha, ha! Cheers! Daniel

very good ,but not all of us have the mathematics to do it your way, I have made sphere using the plywood template for many years, with good results. I also have a sphere cutting jig, this is also helpful, Keep up the good work, with more simple instruction. turners in the past were not as well educated as today , but made perfect spheres anyway. JB UK all the best.

Hi John! Thank you very much, my dear friend, for your comments. I know that the math can be daunting some times and that is the reason I am exploring many different ways to do spheres. In previous videos, I tried two techniques using silhouettes and the shadow projection and they came out pretty nice. I have used plywood templates in the past and that also works great. The jig is a great option if you have to do really big numbers of spheres, I will probably explore that in the future. Cheers! Daniel
