This song is about the optimistic expectation for future innovation through the eyes of the boomer generation.
Amd they came through in spades. A truly great generation.
Actually most of our boomer gen were still a bit young for IGY, it was a worldwide study of the earth in 56, 57. This was more the WWII gen. But boy we watched with fascination and dreamed.
You can't go wrong with any song on this album. And the most amazing thing is: it still feels fresh 42 years later.
Another SOLID week of great tunes and reviews!
Much appreciated!
The engineering on this album is insane...Nightfly is about him growing up in the late 50s and early 60s. I.G.Y. stands for International Geophysical Year, a worldwide scientific collaborative work about the planet Earth in 1956 and 57...I would have been 3 years old...
Goodbye Look is about Cuba..New Frontier is about partying in his dads fallout shelter..and so on...p.s. New Frontier is the best song on the album and allegedly the 2nd most expensive video ever made...
so they held no punches with that album, thats amazing
Fantastic album, start to finish!
i need to hear the rest
I really love this, I always have. . Donald is a genius, thank you Biz.
incredible song
The whole album is great
oh that album is fantastic.
You definitely need to hear the title cut, The Nightfly, it's jaw dropping amazing! The second album, Kamakiriad was actually produced by Walter Becker and every single song is a must hear. Check out Trans Island Skyway, Springtime and the amazing Florida Room!!!
great record.
He does a super smooth cover track on this album, called RUBY BABY.
sound guys are always using this album to do sound checks. excellent recording quality and production!
top notch quality
Florida Room..from Donalds album...Kamakiriad..great track with that shuffle tempo!
I love the horns in that one. Remarkable.
Fagen a musical genius! Gotta do the Title track...the whole album is fire. See what you can stumble upon when your eyes and mind are open......
I really loved this whole album.
I love the harmony in Green Flower Street and the smooth jazz version of Ruby Baby.
I'll go ahead and jump on the "New Frontier" train - I think you'll love it. I enjoy your reviews and the fact that you actually use "sheerl-icks" 🙂 most reviewers don't and I can tell that they didn't really get the message of the song they reviewed.
🔥
"programmed by fellas with passion and vision" - this is where it all went wrong - parasites destroyed the dream
Little gem in this album is the very last track “Walk Between Raindrops…quick, quirky and snappy
The whole album is a banger.
The whole Nightfly-album is as good as any Steely Dan record.
Good choice
The album cover If im not mistaken, is a nod to the late great late night altrnative talk radio legend out of NYC , Long John Knebbel...who was long before Art Bells show. The track NIGHTFLY- is " Lester" the narrator of the song. A late night alternative talk show host.
All his solo albums are great. Check out New Frontier from the same album as IGY, "The Nightfly".
There is not one bad song on the entire album. 😎👍
That lead instrument at the end is a normal synthesizer... able to pitch bend with a roller control under the left hand. No harmonica. Try title track "The Nightfly" There's nothing like it.
An amazing album!!! Check out “New Frontier” from this album ♥️🎶🔥
Walter had addiction troubles. Walter played a mean guitar besides writing stuff. Wendl 2 was a precurser to beat boxes later developed for hip hop. Itvwas used on a track on this album. Wendl 1 was THE FIRST ARTIFICIAL PERCUSSION EVER USED IN A RECORDING SESSION, on steely dan GAUCHO ALBUM.
Absolutely perfect album. I've been known to anger Steely Dan fans by calling it "the best Steely Dan album of all." Obviously all Steely Dan albums contain great songs, superb playing, impeccable production, and Donald's gritty voice, which to me is essential for offsetting the perfection elsewhere. Personally, the last two Dan albums did succumb to a kind of obsession with sound quality, such that they sound a bit too antiseptic to my ears. Where The Nightfly stands apart is that there's so much heart and soul in it, and far less cynicism than on Dan.
