When someone starts referring to Voldemort as “The Dark Lord” and adresses him as “My Lord” while present with him, that’s how you know they’re on his side.
The only good guy who consistently does it is Snape, which only furthers Harry’s suspicion of him in I think it was the 5th book. He even made a comment about it
Casting notice: Sirius Black Qualifications: must be ready to turn from murderous lunatic into Harry’s father figure in under ten minutes Candidates: well who could pull this off better than Gary Oldman?
I was confused at this scene when I first seen it because Sirius wasn’t showing any signs of aggression to Harry, even when Harry attacked him. I was shocked to find out Sirius was good all along.
As contrast, I just watched him as the American Southern accented bad guy in The Fifth Element. The man is unbelievable. What range. Watching him and Alan Rickman work takes my breath away.
It's frustrating that there's no justification for why Sirius knows "the map never lies". It's never *explicitly* stated that Sirius, Peter, Remus, and James were Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs.
They were the 4, Lupin says he is moony, Voldemort calls Pettigrew wormtail, in book 5 Harry tells Snape they have got padfoot in the place where it's hidden. And I think in book 7 they see a letter from James signed prongs
In the prison of Azkaban Professor Lupin states he knows how to work the map because he helped make it, and he said he was Mooney. Not sure if the other 3 ever confirmed but Lupin was
I love just how the twist unravels eloquently here for those who have seen the movie without reading the book for the first time. At first upon all the build-up and discovery of Sirius Black being the murderer who betrayed Harry's parents to Voldemort, we finally see him released kidnapping Ron and dragging him to the shack so we are all in suspense if he is going to actually murder Harry and how he will do it. With Harry threatening him with his wand, Lupin intervenes, we then see that he's a friend of Sirius so we immediately see him as a betrayer as well as a werewolf, and given that the two previous DADA teachers we saw in the previous films were also bad people (only Remus was a good teacher) we assume this is just following the pattern of that position which we'll later realise was cursed by Voldemort every year as to why they only lasted their one year or less per book, then Snape comes in to confront them right when they're about to reveal the truth, we think Snape might be on Harry's side but it just adds to the ambiguity as we the audience are still confused for the first time. Then Harry incapacitates him with the Expelliarmus by shoving him across the room. Then we finally get the bomb when Sirius reveals who really was the betrayer by pointing to Ron's rat, another illegal Animagus in disguise (like Sirius was a dog) but had been remaining in that form for 12 years in the Weasleys' household, with Ron having the most affection for him. He then tries to run away like a true rat would, only to then revert to his original form being the traitor who is Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), ex-Marauder, gave Harry's parents away to Voldemort and currently works for him and would then proceed to resurrect him in the next film. P.S. I don't understand who the cat is in relation to the book chapter because I haven't read it or in relation to this sequence since Lupin is a werewolf. Could somebody please explain?
The cat is just a "normal" cat, named Crookshanks I think and it's Hermione's pet. The cat is very intelligent and figured out immediately that Scabbers wasn't a rat and when meeting Sirius, Crookshanks also figured he wasn't a dog. Sirius got Crookshanks to trust him and communicated who he was after, so the cat tried to catch Scabbers, and stole the passwords from the Gryffindor room (Neville wrote them down, since the knight on the portrait that guarded the tower after the portrait of the fat lady was damaged would always change the passwords) when it didn't succeed in catching him. Crookshanks informed Sirius of Peter's moves, like leaving blood on the sheets to fake his death (in the books, Ron sees blood on the sheets and accuses Hermione of letting her pet eat Scabbers, but Peter just bit himself to allow himself to flee). And in the books, Crookshanks also leads them to the cabin and presses on one of the roots to get them through the tunnel (there is a root that works as a button to reveal the passage to the tunnel, when the marauders were young, Peter, as the smallest of the animagi, was the one to press it to join Remus in the cabin). Crookshanks is as intelligent and as loyal to Hermione and also Sirius as Hedwig is to Harry. The cat figures secrets out as well and does serve quite a lot in the plot of the third book
Snape almost died here when Sirius told him to go into the Shriekimg Shack to see where Lupin always ran off to during a full moon. Years later Voldemort would kill Snape in this very same place. Comes full circle.

Oh it's way worse than what the movies portrays the dementors would often subject the prisoners to intense psychological torture by regularly sucking out every positive emotion slowly breaking them down into despair until they're physically unrecognizable basically Azkaban is the Wizarding worlds own sanctioned super Auschwitz
Azkaban is way worse in the books than what the movies show because the only guards it has are the Dementors and they regularly subject the prisoners to psychological torture by sucking every positive emotion slowly breaking them down until all that's left is a husk of despair making them physically unrecognizable to the point where they look like the living dead
3:50 For a moment, i thought this was inconsistent with Snape knowing Occlumency (Snape could've read Harry's mind & known he was about to get stunned)... But then i realized how it could still work. Harry -- without knowing about Occlumency -- disguised his intentions while pointing his wand at Sirius. The anger towards Sirius just moments before, was still fresh on Harry's mind, so perhaps he was focusing on that but redirected it towards Snape at the last moment.
While I hope the series adapts more of the books, I hope they mix more of movie Sirius with book Sirius. Like yes, he's frustrated, angry and immature...But when he sees Harry struggling, he does his best to be the better man and the adult, seeing Harry, not James.
I love how impactful this scene is for everyone. Years after first seeing this scene was when I learned about the history that snape & sirius had (mainly the prank when they were in school). Really adds more power in this scene and how Snape was probably feeling at that moment

"Why don't you run along and play with your chemistry set" is my favorite line of the whole series of movies.
Yeah that triggered Snape XD aside from him believing that it's Sirius fault that Lilly died.

This is probably the best scene out of all the movies. It’s beautifully paced and acted, its shot extremely well, and the twist was pretty solid.
couldn't agree more on that!
Yeah PoA is one of my favorite movies of the series. The whole thing with the time traveling was epic, too.
It’s sooo chaotic and the power dynamics change so fast and the whole movie’s mystery is unraveled in such dramatic fashion.
