  • In this episode we cover yet another classic race boat here in San Diego. Sweet little boat with some very interesting features and we show how to get kelp off your rudder woohoo
    From the owner Randy Ames
I have had Liberty for seven years. The boat was originally purchased by a SDYC member and was called “Wow”. The boat raced quite a bit here in the 80s.
The boat was moved to Santa Barbara in the 90s and competed there. The boat was called “Raptor” in those days. Like many old race boats, she fell into disrepair. The owner of the floating shipyard in Santa Barbara got the boat on a lien-sale and breathed new life into her. Santa Barbara is one of the only harbors I know with a floating dry-dock. San Diego has one for submarines on Ballast Point. The boat had the transom cut out and her forward hatch was upgraded to a round hatch which was better for spinnaker drops. The boat was repainted Americas Cup Blue with sable decks. Once the shipyard owner’s divorce was final, the boat was renamed “Liberty”.
After a cosmetic refit, the shipyard owner lost interest in the boat and let her fall into disrepair again. She was purchased late one night for a very small price, as the shipyard owner was leaving town reportedly in a hurry.
The new owner was a member of Santa Barbara Yacht Club. He lavished the boat with a complete of complement of new sails and high-tech rigging. The boat raced successfully in Santa Barbara for several years. The owner wanted to move up to a more challenging sport boat and put Liberty on the market.
I purchased the boat in 2013. During the time I have owned her, she has been constantly upgraded. The boat is actively campaigned and has placed in several major regattas.

Sailed aboard the plug for this boat, made of wood, named "Hotfoot" 20 years ago out of my club (Encinal YC, Alameda CA). They sail very nicely. Carl was a very nice person.

Thanks Scott for all your interesting race boat videos. You are a perfect candidate to Broker race yachts, perhaps you already do that ?? Best Regards. Henry Rubio
PS. It's been many years ago we met on my Olson 30 " Hot Flash"

You want to review my Capri 30 if you haven't done one, yet? I'd love it! It's a retro boat, a good boat, and there are several around town, but as far as I know, mine is the only one that is red, has been to Hawaii, and has no motor!

Sailor Jerry Product placement? Sharpie ad? Never overlook a revenue source! JK Scott. You keep these amazingly informative and entertaining. (Glad we don't need kelp cutters on the Gulf Coast!)

Why you wouldn't do that on a "today boat?" The narrow cockpit to make room below for aft port, aft starboard berths?. I wish you would also cover the keel setup and construction and how that affects performance and safety. Having seen keels ripped entirely off boats in full on sailing mode in bumpy conditions, it's always a little cloud in the back of my mind when on a boat I'm not familiar on.

Scot, I look forward to these reviews every week. You mentioned Ganbare at the beginning of this one. Is there a Peterson one tonner in the area you could review? Keep them coming!

The tracks on the dog house is the old check stay location. MORC penalized the further aft the runners or check stays were located.

Swept back spreaders were very common on fractional rigs particularly smaller boats by that time. IOR boats had large crew and you get better control of the mast with runners so use the guys to do these jobs they were common in Mashhad and it's too.Tumble home also reinforces the hull side keeping down drumming and like a j25 the cockpits then were not expect to be sat in just a place for your legs you sat on the decks mostly on the raiI much prefer it to the cockpits of today and in strong downwind conditions you need to move crew aft so bunks were often placed there and they were actually quite comfortable carbon fiber rigs have allowed for most of he changes to stability in the boats of today.also IOR and cca before were trying to encourage racer-cruiser so manufacturers could make fast boats for families that liked to race on occasion of course professionals took over making that impossible so now we have phrf where a committee decides which boats will win

Scott, great video, I am in the process of hopefully getting “National Biscuit” a 36 foot Schumacher, been sitting for a while, we’re in the process of cleaning her up and taking her out for a sail in a few weeks, do you know anything about her? I was told it is ridden hard and put away wet!
